Try Coach Tubberville of Cincinnatti. Every though Temple upset them today, he would love to be back in the SEC. He has had a solid overall career, but Spurrier has a much easier schedule in 2016 despite some tough home opponents.

get any of those you listed. chad just got to SMU, paul johnson will NEVER leave GT, and stoops has free reign in the OU athletic dept. so I don't see that happening.

Well, the rumble was when they were trying to get him for DC last year that he would be set up as HC in waiting, so why not?

If we're going with an old coach past his prime that will bring his son along, I'll say Bobby Bowden.

However, given the climate at that place, I feel like Kiffin or Petrino are the two obvious front runners.

Bobby or Paul? Paul is HC now at Idaho, granted with a 2-23 record, but he was with Bobby at Louisville, Atlanta, and Arkansas through 2009.

Re: Butch Davis***

I think that's possible. Another name I've heard floating around is Todd Graham, the Arizona State HC, though his stock may have taken a bit of a tumble after he got spanked by A&M last week.

Gamecocks can probably afford to spend as much as $4 million on a coach they really want...they do have money. They'll get a decent coach, or at least a coach with a decent name. They can also almost certainly outspend Georgia Tech for Paul Johnson if they want him. That's a crapshoot, there. PJ is actually a lot like Spurrier, and he looks really good right now because in Justin Thomas he has the best QB he's ever had at Georgia Tech. When PJ moves along, if GT decides to go conventional, they're also looking at a full-on rebuild since their entire offense was recruited for the option...and the Bees really do not have much defensive talent, at all, since PJ and staff are probably the most indifferent recruiting staff in the Southeast aside from maybe, well, Spurrier's. They play a gambling, high-risk, high-reward style on D since if they give up a big play, no big deal, but if they create a turnover it's another chance for their O to stick it to you. You can gamble that way when you're shortening games and playing the offensive scheme they're playing there.

Whatever, the Gamecocks themselves are still looking at a full-on rebuild. All those JUCO's they signed - who really have not panned out, as JUCO's usually don't - have really distorted the class distribution of a roster that is not exactly loaded with promising young talent to begin with. Next year Brandon Shell is gone. Brandon Wilds is gone. Pharoah Cooper is likely gone. At which point they are due for an advanced course in Pain and Suffering.

IMHO, it doesn't matter much, at least in the short term. Barring an absolute homerun hire - like a younger Spurrier dropping into their laps - they're looking at 3-4 years, minimum, before they're really relevant again. Their recruiting has been very poor for at least that long.
