My honest guess, no research to prove it, is that lots of parents used to go to soccer as a babysitter for their young kids.
Now those same type of parents can toss a tablet or tv remote to their kids and have a babysitter without the kid having to leave the house.
Also I can remember when I was a kid soccer was being pushed hard as "the fastest growing sport in America" and "the next major sport in this country". These things got lots of parents to sign kids up for soccer thinking that they could be part of the growth movement.
That push has disappeared and soccer has lost its buzz.

I think kids are less active than they used to be. More potential distractions in terms of activities, electronics, etc., coupled with a society that moves less and gets outside less, equals a decline in the number of kids playing sports.

NYT, so has to be racism, right ?  Those of you "seasoned" tnetters know that, for about 50 yrs now, we have been force fed soccer, told it's the "global" gm, etc etc. While some of that is certainly true, it is really difficult to accept that, after all this time, with size of our population (including the large influx of immigrants that prioritize soccer)we can't seem to consistently field a competitive team on the world stage. Can't compete with some tiny countries with less resources ? For the casual fan, world cup and olympics are all that matters. And we have done very little there, despite the commitment to youth soccer over the past half century. It's interesting, for sure. For you that have more knowledge here - what gives? Is it a problem with USA soccer ? The ladies have certainly been able to perform. Sorry for the ramble - this has always been a topic of mystery to me.

Imagine all of the very athletic kickers and punters in college football and the NFL played soccer for the entire lives instead of football.
If that were the case we would likely compete in men's soccer.
Frankly I'd rather see them on the football field because I don't like men's soccer.

us from competing globally. It’s the fact that the Lebrons, Kobe’s, and even the next level of athlete below that in the US have long been steered to basketball and football in this country vs soccer

I am assuming this article is talking about rec league soccer. Most kids now are playing club league soccer(one of mine is) so I can see where they say the numbers are down. There just are not many good rec leagues like there were 30 years ago.

The article is referring to club too and the costs are high. My son played 7 years of club soccer before leaving it to focus on basketball.
Lots of rec leagues are now run by club soccer organizations in order to recruit players to the club team. Thus paying higher fees into the $1000’s.
Soccer should one of the most inexpensive sports.

2+ years old. Kids have more choices, probably fewer kids demographically, cost of the sport..... I would like to see % of kids by Year playing each sport as a good means to compare. Gender breakdowns would also help to decipher trends. Lacrosse is starting to eat at #s for all I’m sure. Volleyball and softball have been exploding for girls. Soccer #s had been aided by being one of the few choices for girls outside of basketball, dance and gymnastics originally.

so you have your U___ age groups and kids don't just get to play with their friends if their friends are not in the same age bracket.
Another thing that hurts is the running around for games, even at the rec level. That got old for us.
And finally, now that we can see real soccer on TV any time in the US, I think it affects kids who know they will probably never play at that level due to the differences in how the US does soccer vs. the rest of the world. If you're in England or Europe and have talent, they send you to an "academy" while you're very young. Away from home. Minimal schooling. Soccer is your job.

I think the biggest problem is pay-for-play.
I think there's going to be a big upsurge in participation as youth development starts getting fed by the pro clubs - as it is in Europe - as opposed to elite pay-for-play clubs that charge often insane rates for select-team participation and tend to conquer field space like it's a military campaign.
They get away with it because they're financed and organized - whereas the rec leagues they're displacing and treating as organ donors aren't.
MLS is expanding like crazy, as is the USSL, and pro clubs are sprouting like mushrooms around the country. As those start taking up the slack I think you'll see re-invigorated youth leagues from the top down, and there's going to be a big surge in popularity again.
We're definitely in a down cycle at the moment, but when I look at the USMNT I see a team that's vastly more technical and sophisticated than it was even ten years ago; it's just very, very young. I think there was a gap between the Bradenton-based academy system and the time the MLS academies started producing real quality again...the generation right after the Dempsey/Donovan generation was particularly grim, and so there was a giant donut hole in the USA's talent pool.
The USA is actually thumping the rest of CONCACAF - except Mexico - pretty thoroughly right now. But I don't think people realize just how good Mexico is at the moment either, in terms of both its talent pool and its coach; Tata Martinez is good, as he showed with Atlanta United.

Why do people hate soccer so much? Is it because they don’t understand it. What is so wrong with having another sport to follow? I for one, want to see more sports. I want my son to play all of them and see what he’s good at. In my early years, I didn’t like soccer that much because I didn’t understand it. I was lucky to have some friends who played high level NCAA soccer that taught me the rules and about the different clubs in the world in my early 20s. I absolutely love watching it now. It’s pretty nice during football season to have something to watch all morning before all the kickoffs. Sports can coexist. It’s weird to see people just bash soccer all the time. Just don’t watch it.

in '84 and '87 and playing intramurals while there. It's a game that kids can play at least portions of anywhere, just needing a ball. Soccer on TV is everywhere now, and you can see the English, German, and Italian premier leagues pretty easy on NBCSN, CBS Sports, FS1, and yes, even ESPN now. Good soccer with more and more Americans playing in the best leagues. Hopefully some of this exposure and experience with young American players will start to show up in the men's national team!

Some people seem to feel threatened by sports they don’t understand. Calling a sport communist, socialist, Yankee, girly, etc., just because they don’t like it or didn’t play it, makes zero sense.

The US has not been this bad in soccer since the 80's. Not qualifying for the world cup in CONCACAF is embarrassing. Losing to Trinidad and Tobago is embarrassing. They have had 3 or 4 embarrassing losses in the last year. The US is miles away from being competitive in FIFA soccer.

Baseball, basketball, and football will always be the three kings. To bring this around to Clemson, Nuk was quoted (though I paraphrase) in an article saying that if he didn’t have the option of being a professional football player he likely would have been a goalie. This is coming from the guy that played both basketball and football for us at first... not football and soccer. Even the guy that would have picked soccer second professionally wasn’t able to pick soccer second in the NCAA because of overlapping seasons with the sport. Directly interfering far more than the slight overlap of football into basketball.
When the season directly interferes you will never beat any of the three kings of American sports.

I think its just kids are specializing in 1 sport at about the age of 8. Flag football is becoming big as well and that is definitely competing for the same kids.
