LAST PLAY QUESTION - NATTY
[2]
Posted: Aug 3, 2017, 10:52 AM

For those that attended the game (or even watched)...
Would it have been better for there to be ZERO time left after Renfrow's catch?
Walk-off Homerun type of finish?
Or did Justice need to be served with the onside kick to seal the deal?

On sidekick added a little salt to the wound, especially after the 2015 natty game.

Don't you just love the way the 'Buma players watched as Huegel scooped up the ball?

They looked like they had no idea what to do on that onside kick. Totally stunned.

The onside kick was not meant to rub salt in any wound as you say. It was to prevent a return for a touchdown. Dabo has more class than that.

It was a functional salt in the wound. Dabo has no problem laying the wood like that as long as its a play thats necessary, not excessive.
A good example was Syracuse, 2013. we were already up by like 30 points in the 2nd quarter. We have the ball with 4th and 1 on the Syracuse goal line. What does Dabo do? Run it up the middle. Yeah it was perceived as a big "F U" to the Cuse team but, what else was there to do?

No you cant return a onside kick for positive yardage. Time stops soon as the kicking team gains possession.

Would have been great if he lined up in the shotgun and flung it downfield into the Clemson stands in the final play!

The victory knee at the end was perfect for Watson to end the Game....THE END. Close the Book and walk away National Champions.

The pass play would not have been called if the coaches thought the clock would run out. Dabo thought that, in the event the pass went incomplete,we would have time left on the clock to kick the field goal for overtime.I am glad that his thoughts were validated, as it showed BOTH aggressiveness AND good coaching.

from one who was at the game: HIGH STRESS
[2]

that last 1 second lasted 30 minutes, it seemed.
We were all ready to hug, high five, weep, go crazy (and we did, in a somewhat tempered way). But it seemed like forever before it was truly OVER. There were way too many things that could have gone wrong in that final second.
Do you realize that if the refs had ruled that we had touched the on-side kick ball one INCH before it went 10 yards, that Bama would have had one hail-mary play from the 45 yard line? NOBODY from the Clemson side would have wanted to suffer through that.

But it would have been fun to watch MW go after it vs those Alabama receivers

You're so right... that last second, the review, and everything involved took FOREVER! It was enjoyable because I knew the odds were so far in our favor (regarding something impossible happening), but it was still stressful.
To me, that last kneel and the curtain call was almost like Renfrow catching that pass again.

just watch TNet during games -
Scott/Elliot should have definitely called the play to run all the time off the clock, that totally could have cost us the game and the NC.
This kind of irresponsible play calling is going to cost us eventually.

do you know anything about football? That play was perfect, they had to preserve the field goal option, that doesn't happen with a big fat 0 on the clock 'bama wins and then all the brilliant folks here are saying why didn't they keep time on the clock... we won the natty, sit back in your lazy boy and enjoy it.

dropped the pass. Would have hated to lose the natty on that play...glad we left a sec for a field goal attempt. And, I have never agreed with the onside kick. Too risky. If they fall on it, which they should have (most onside kicks are recovered by receiving team), they get the last play hail mary, with great field position.

No, the play was designed/executed to ensure there was time on the clock had it not worked. Then we would have kicked to tie. I thought the onside kick was both brilliant (because it worked) and scary because if a bama player had fallen on the ball with a knee down they would have one more play... as it turned out it was awesome to take a knee for the win... and Raymond James was out of control .... what a game.

a bunch of dumb commentary about how it a was a stupid, risky call by Dabo to run a play with that little time left and how we should've just kicked the FG. I'm glad we were spared all of that BS.

It was a gutsy call and took a lot of balls. If the ball gets bobbled or tip in the air there was a good chance the clock expires. I think it was a great play call and was just icing on the cake to win it with one second on the clock just makes the game that much sweeter.

The onside kick and kneeldown provided a few more minutes for the Bama fans to skulk off quietly and without incident, and make room for the CELEBRATION.
Love that V formation.

We would not have had an "official" game ball, since Renfro tossed his winning ball to the ref and then got mobbed by the rest of the team.
With Deshaun taking the kneel-down, we have a true "game ball."

The onside kick and DW taking a knee surronded by the offense were the perfect "take a bow" for the greatest Q4 in Tiger history.

The game needed to end on the catch ... !! Everything else was anticlimactic.
All the delay and discussion took away from the excitement. It was already very late and most of the nation besides us Clemson fans were enthusiastic, but they were tired and ready to know the result and go to bed.
The final few minutes were a big buzz kill IMHO.
