Texans coach on Deshaun Watson's 1st NFL game

by - Assoc. Editor -

Former Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson was very impressive in his first NFL action against the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday night.

Watson finished the night 15-for-25 passing for 179 yards with zero turnovers and had three rushes for 24 yards including an impressive 15-yard touchdown run.

His head coach Bill O'Brien spoke highly of Watson's first experience in an NFL game.

"He's a smart player. He's an instinctive player," O'Brien said about Watson. "First game out there I thought he did some good things. It's a big jump from college to the NFL. I thought he handled it pretty well. Probably a couple of things that we could have done differently. He probably could have done a little better on certain plays but overall I thought he handled himself pretty well for first time out."

O'Brien had the following take on starter Tom Savage's first action of the preseason.

"Tom is a resilient guy," O'Brien said. "He's always going to go out there and put his best foot forward. He's a fun guy to coach."

I'm not big on rookies starting their first season in the NFL and getting their confidence crushed but Watson will make this a tough decision for O'Brien regarding the quarterback battle.
