Why does our offense fall asleep in the second half.

Does the opposition out adjust us on defense. Do we come out in a conservative posture. Do we become so tight they we may lose the game that we quit trying to go win the game? We had several opportunities in the second half with the offense to put the game away but we don’t just like in the S.C. game. It’s like we waiting for them to catch up before we start playing again on offense.

Because we stop doing things that are working. And we start playing not-to-lose football.

It cost us the SC game. Almost cost us the Pitt game. And almost cost us the ACCCG.

I said earlier in the week that I hoped our coaches learned after SC to keep doing what works. Unfortunately, they didn’t. Maybe they will now…hopefully.

Prevent offense and Prevent Def does not work yet we continue to do it.

To me, it seems like they adjust at halftime for what we showed them in the first half and we make few changes to our offensive plan for the 2H. There is simply little reaction from us to their adjustments.

He sees it pretty well in the first half.

cade just misses a deep shot to wescoe that is a sure td and we go up by 4 scores. if that connects it doesnt come down to a fg. i think the big issue is our running game is non existant. between the o line not opening holes and us running a slow injured mafah

That's why we were running Cade, or at least threatening to, in the 1st half. It worked perfectly...then, we just stopped doing it.

I thought Haynes ran hard and was getting 2-3 more yards per carry than Mafah would have on those plays. Haynes got through the hole and hit the second level several times. Tells me the O Line was doing enough for a healthy RB.

agree, Haynes made the offense better***

Than Mafah has done all season. I think we very much would have benefited from two feature backs again this season. If Haynes doesn’t go down, I don’t think the game finishes as close as it did. After he went out, their speed was enough to contain Mafah and they sold out on passing.

Because Dabo sits on a lead and goes conservative and it cost us against the coots and almost against smu

We’re playing a RB that is too hurt to want contact. Our play calling is suspect. Our QB struggles to see the field.

Cade has been a difference maker at QB. Without a running game, we have had

to ask him to shoulder the passing and running burdens. Against Texas, we may have to dial that back to prevent the kill shots that they will try to put on him.

We refuse to put our foot on the throats of opponents. Don't know why!

We scored touchdowns in the first half off of a couple of really nice passes.

In the second half, CK had a receiver open for a catch and run for a touchdown and missed him.

and then there was the inability to convert on 3rd and 2 multiple times.

It's the same thing that happened against GA.

If you miss your chances on a high risk high reward offense you don't score and you don't keep the ball long.

With our banged up RB and OL we can't play ball control.

I've thought about this many times this season and have started leaning toward one of two things:

1. A potential lack of experience and lack of ability to make suggestions and reads by the analysts in the booth.

2. Are the pictures of the defenses being sent to the sidelines on the new "pads" not showing everything Riley needs to see to make adjustments. Should Riley be in the booth to get first hand visuals?

Something is definitely missing when it comes to real time game adjustments for the offense because I don't believe the "brakes" are being applied and if they are stop it!

I think the OC gets in his head and plays not to lose.***

That’s literally been Dabo’s philosophy since he got here.

turnovers in their own territory, and then a roughing the passer call on a 3rd down where they stopped us, followed by a TD on a busted coverage. It’s not like we were making long, sustained drives in the first half and then stopped doing that in the second half.

It seemed to me like once SMU stopped making dumb mistakes, our offense showed its true colors.

Now for the defense.

We tend to be far more aggressive early on, but with the lead in the second half we change defensive strategy. Some on here have referred to it as prevent defense, but it’s not technically the same. It’s a strategy, one that some DC’s (a few at Clemson in the past) employ all game.

The theory is to play soft, let the opponent get some yards, but if they score make them have to get six or seven first downs to do it, and use up time. Don’t allow the quick score. In theory, odds are they will turn the ball over either on downs or by fumble or interception at some point. Maybe if they score, it will be a FG and not a TD.

I don’t like that strategy, but that’s what they do. I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s lack of depth. But I’m not sure Wes is to blame. Dabo has done that a lot except not so much during the Venables years.

TB used to employ that strategy during his years. His theory was “let them score” but we’ll outscore them. We’ll win the turnover battle and beat them 48-35.

I think the first half and in the case of SMU, the first quarter, wears our coaches out and they have to take a nap at halftime so they just don't have time to make adjustments.

Here is what I thought I saw in the acc championship

SMU started off playing man coverage and one safety

They loaded the box and dedicated themselves to stopping the run.

Cade did what he’s supposed to do and we gashed them passing. That fake draw and pass really sent SMU for a loop.

Then they started to make adjustments and started playing 2 deep and mixed some zone in, and spied on Cade in the second half.

They found out that their DL was good enough to hold Mafah in check without bringing extra guys down in the box.

I really think Haynes going at the beginning of the half really killed any threat we had of breaking off a 30-40 yard run. With Mafah hurt, and a good DL, we turned one dimensional quickly

Garrett and the offensive staff have got a ton of work to do in just 2 weeks to figure out what to do at running back.

I am still waiting for anyone to show statistically that our playcalling (rather than the results) has gotten more conservative in the 2nd half.
