While I do think the CFP committee got it right...

on the selections (although I might change some of the parings), I do think we'll see a push to eliminate the conference championship games and the automatic qualifiers for conference champions.

Thoughts?

I think there will still be the automatic bids for the 5 best conf championships, I just think the first round bye will go to the 4 highest ranked teams.

I also think this is the likely revision.

Yeah for sure, that’s they way every other tournament works. Conference championship gets you in, but it doesn’t guarantee a seed. I think it’s just a little different in football because the bye week means so much more and a team not participating in their conference championship essentially could get a double bye

Sankey will likely attempt to eliminate the auto-bids

I'm less sure about the conference championship games. The committee did what I had hoped and didn't really punish the losers. SMU still got into the playoff, and Texas and PSU got the highest non-champ seeds. Eliminating those games would eliminate alot of money, and money is the biggest driving force in CFB.

The auto byes have to go away, but there needs to be auto bids for winning

your conference. They will go to 14 and give top two teams the byes - SEC and B10, I mean. LOL.

SMU/ Texas and ND/Indiana is would have been a no brainer.

Agreed, the first four seeds shouldn't have to be conference champs.

I absolutely agree with conference champs being automatic qualifiers, but playoff seeding should be based on perceived strength as a team. Just like it's done for college basketball.

In other words, Boise State and Arizona State have no business being seeded where they are.

Personally I think its fine the way it is but there are way to many crybabies at this point for a switch not to happen. I think the other conferences (not SEC / B1G) will push back as much they can. Some people will probably make the lame comparison to basketball tournament but the NFL model is what it should be compared to, where divisional winners get a bye.

I think it's mostly fine the way it is. I'm fine with the top 4 conference champions getting byes. What doesn't make sense to me is if they're doing it that way, then why doesn't the 5th highest conference champion get a 1st round home game?

I know they aren't basing things on the NFL playoffs, but they sorta are with the way they're doing the top 4 teams currently. In the NFL they give the highest ranked team from each conference a bye, and all other division winners are seeded in order by record with them all getting home games in the 1st round. You often see a team that finished 2nd in a division with a better record than teams that won other divisions end up having to play on the road in the 1st round. To me you need to make winning conferences mean something.
