What options do we have in the portal at QB?

1. Any highly rated QB from the portal is going to want to start.
2. You don’t want to risk the talented Cade Klubnik leaving. Despite the criticism he’s received this season. I do believe next season will be a big year for Cade
3. I don’t see Dabo throwing millions of dollars at a player.
So with those 3 things in mind whoever you get in at QB. Has to realize there here to push Cade but ultimately be Cades backup. And Dabo is probably not going to pay 1-2 million for a QB. So what options do we really have?

The issue with the portal will be Dabo. He's going to be honest up front and tell any kid he brings in from the portal they are going to have an opportunity to EARN a job. Highly doubt he offers guarantees and portal players looking for a fresh start want to know they will be featured. I think the portal will work for Clemson in regards to positions where multiple players can see the field and be featured (ol, wr, de, LB, etc) but not positions like QB, kicker, punter, or rb.

We are not looking for anyone to challenge for a starting role, and no QB with expectations of starting would come here.

I am not opposed to sitting that QB, if he is struggling, even if it's temporary, if we have a replacement who is capable of running the offense effectively. I know it's not a popular position, but I trust Dabo to manage that situation just fine.

That's what concerns me. Cade has not proven to me that he is a power 5, top tier QB. We need a proven QB that can read the field and not stare down one receiver and almost always go to his first read. We need a QB that knows where the outlet receiver is. Where option 2 or 3 is supposed to be.

SMU QB Preston Stone is pretty good. Took them to undefeated AAC season and first championship game although he broke his fibula Saturday night, we could get him cheap. Dr's say he will make 100% recovery.
Also have Chandler Morris, went out with knee injury 4wks ago, familiar with Clemson, could get cheap.
Maybe both of these guys need 9mos to recover, would be ok as backup to start season but good enough to push Cade.
See the theme here? Get them cheap! Dabo is not gonna buy a $2mil QB and I don't want him to buy a 1 and Done.

Why would Stone transfer to become a backup when he’s going to be a starter on an ACC team with an explosive offense? Wouldn’t expect any splash transfers at qb this year, maybe another coach in training along the likes of HJ and Tyson

Cade ain’t free. Gotta pay these guys at least somewhat competitive money to stay.
I think it would be Maalik murphy from Texas. Dual threat guy with multiple years left.

CK is going to be fine. Not an uber talented player, but can get the job done - does have to minimize the tendency to panic. Hopefully he'll have worked through that by next year.

Our option is we will play at least one of the transfer QBs. I had counted up at one point that half of our losses since 2018 have been to Transfer QBs.

We actually need some help at OL and DE. Hard to see how we would be bidding on another QB.
