What is up w/ admissions to Clemson!!!!
Feb 15, 2006, 6:20 PM
|

I just found out that my neice was accepted into Clemson as an out-of state student (she is from North Carolina). However she did not get into the Calhoun Honors College despite a top 6 % class standing, 4.5 GPA in AP and a 1290 SAT. Has already been accepted to UGA, Furman, and Wake Forest. Furthermore, my attorney's son has a 3.2 GPA and scored a 1290 on his SAT, has been accepted to UGA, Auburn, and Wofford but just got turned down by Clemson. Wasn't even offered to be wait listed or anything, just flat rejected!!! Is it really getting this tough to get in now? I thought Clemson would love all of these out-of-state students that would be able to pay full tuition. Any insight?

That 3.2 GPA might be kind of low, the way they do weighted GPA's now. I don't know too much about the admissions requirements for the Calhoun Honors College, but I know the median SAT score for the South Carolina Honors College is around 1390. Calhoun is probably almost that.

many average colleges. SCHC is way above average even if it's part of USuC. 1400 AVERAGE SAT doesn't leave room for a 925 with a low gpa.

Basically you have to have a 3.5 GPA (unweighted), top 5% of the class, and above a 1350 SAT to get an invite to the Honors College...its usually pretty cut and dry and has to be since there is no personal contact during the admissions process

I sent in a normal application to Clemson (I never considered CU...but it was free), and they just sent me a letter saying I had been accepted into Calhoun. The SC Honors College had a separate application, with essay questions and everything. I kinda wish they just did it like Calhoun, lol.

could go to the Tri-County program and then be admitted next year without reapplying. As long as he has a 2.5 and 30 hours. Everything would just transfer over. Only 200 are accepted into that program.
Does anyone know anything about this program?

however, when I came to Clemson you could appeal the initial admissions decision and I highly reccomend trying that. Basically what most people do for that is tell admissions they want to appeal (I think there are instructions with the letter they sent turning down a student) and then get reccomendations and things like that and mail it to Clemson in a package and they look at the prospective student more in depth.

will decrease the number of people appealing, so you may have less people to compete with after all. Its always worth a shot, you never know!

Been around for a little while, but apparently they have altered it a bit. It used to be that they only made you go to Tri-County for your first college semester just to get the basic 101's (English, Math, Science, etc.) out of the way.

The Honors College is not a very well organized program
Feb 15, 2006, 7:20 PM

I wasn't invited until my junior year despite being qualified coming out of high school and all through college. I have no idea why some people slip through the cracks, but it definately frustrated me to be invited and then told I didn't have enough time left to be in the program (even though I should have gotten in much earlier)

I am a member right now, and I only use it just to take that one extra honors class. Generally they have been smaller and easier because professors do not force us to do dumb assignments. Some people use it for the benefits of honors housing (which I don't) and reduced prices for cultural events (which I also do not do).
With the exception of having to have an advisor meeting every now and then with someone from the HC department (I think I've had one, in my year and a half at CU), I have been able to avoid contact with their office. I just delete their emails because none of them pertain to me.
If you are planning to be a Rhodes Scholar or apply for some grants or fellowships, you absolutely need to establish a relationship with the office advisors. If not, just leave em alone.

About Honors College admissions letter...
Feb 15, 2006, 7:30 PM
|
|
If I remember correctly, my admissions letter to the Honors College came sometime after I received my actual letter of admission. She may still get it sometime soon.
Also, even if she does not get in her first semester, she can still apply for the CHC later on during her college years. Personally, I think some people make too big of a deal about the Honors College. While I am a member and take my required one Honors class per semester, I cannot say that it has really changed my college academic experience. It has given me a chance to take classes with generally smaller student/faculty ratios, but that's about it.
Now, if she wants to live in HC housing her first semester, that is a whole different story and you might want to get her to call the HC office for clarification.

Now that I think about it, that's what happened when I was accepted - first accepted to Clemson, then got a letter about the HC.
Like you, I didn't think it was a very big deal. I stayed in one year because it got me a better chemistry professor, and for that one year it made registration easier. When I realized it wasn't going to help me with registration in my sophomore year (so few sections for lots of engineering classes), I decided it wasn't worth it and left the program.
I think the HC thesis is good experience for those who HAVE to go to graduate school with their undergraduate majors, or for those who want to go to medical or dental school. I'm not sure it's worthwhile for anyone else, though. Also, I remember thinking that the director was a jerk.

I find it hard to believe that he was accepted to Wofford and not to Clemson.
Statsistically speaking Wofford is the toughest school in the state to get into with only 250 to 275 spots available. Wofford only has 1000 students so they are able to take the best of the best each year.

It seems like guidance counselors made a big deal out of it in HS to apply as early as possible in order to get accepted sooner, especially for for some of the tougher majors, like engineering.

it is higher than third-hardest school to get into in SC (behind Furman and Clemson). I hate to say it, but in my dealings with Wofford people, on the whole their student/alumni base seem to have a very high opinion of themselves. That tends to happen at small, private schools though.
