Uptick.......

Just a heads up, there's a mysterious "uptick" in walking pneumonia, especially in children. I'm only saying this because 2/3 of our children have had it in the past month. Pediatrician is swamped with it. Media has been informed the word to use is "uptick", evidently. The majority of the pneumonia is Mycoplasma pneumonia, bacterial, treatable, but still not something to mess around with. And before blaming the vax, it's hit our vaxxed and unvaxxed kids, both.

Anyway, here's some more on the "uptick". Evidently a 2,167% increase is called an "uptick". Who knew?

I only keep saying "uptick" because that's what the media says:

I can keep going, but you get the picture. Reasons are the usual. Not enough hand washing. One month, unenforced lockdowns, 4 years ago. You know, the usual suspects. Those three weeks our kids missed of school set them back tremendously. Oh, also, this is worldwide, China had this problem before the US. No mention of that either, as we live in a US-only news bubble. Oh, there's also a worldwide shortage of azithromycin, oddly.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/rfk-jr-comes-home-anti-vaccine-group-commits-break-us-infectious-disea-rcna123551

“I’m gonna say to NIH scientists, God bless you all,” Kennedy said. “Thank you for public service. We’re going to give infectious disease a break for about eight years.”

Seems RFK wants to concentrate on chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes (fine), at the expense of infectious disease. I promise, infectious diseases will not take 8 years off.

How about ending farm subsidies, and big food subsidies, a majority of which are for complex carb crops/food products. We subsidize farmers tens of billions, every year, to make sugar cheaper, then subsidize Hershey, Kraft, ConAgra, and Nabisco, etc. billions, THEN spend $60 billion treating diabetes alone, much less obesity.

Farm subsidies for corn are why HFCS is cheaper than sugar in the US. End those subsidies, and cane sugar becomes competitive again, both get more expensive, and Coca-Cola may just use less of it to keep the prices stable. Who knows. Oh, forgot, also would need to end the protective tariffs on sugar as well. We slap tariffs and quotas on cane sugar as well, again to keep those corn farms producing cheap sugar, and fuel for cars (dumbest thing ever btw).

things to consider.

last viralgram thing we get from our local childrens hospital, mycoplasma is up, but only 6-8% positives on the respiratory pathogen panel that screens for like 15 viruses they do a lot in the ER. so it is up, but still large majority of head cold symptoms are viral.

it is called walking pneumonia because in a large majority you don't get that sick, persistent cough, fever can be common, but unlikely to progress to respiratory compromise etc. Most healthy people clear on their own. And I've sent in a few rx's for azithromycin this week, no problems with filling. If there is a shortage, there are other abx, not as convenient dosing and taste ick, but alternatives

We are about as busy as typical this time of year.

We had to wait a day to get into our pediatrician.

Pediatrician said he's seen a lot of pneumonia recently. I never had walking pneumonia growing up. I had pneumonia only twice in my life, both times as an adult. One was likely flu-related.

Both kids diagnosed on chest x-rays. Almost a month apart.....maybe 3 weeks.

Interesting fact, neither me, nor my mother, have ever tested positive for any virus, ever, that was a nasal swab. As a result, both my mother and I have never had influenza, or covid, or RSV, or whatever. PCR, rapid, doesn't matter. This goes back decades. 8 decades for her, almost 5 now for me. I know on the influenza rapid tests, they're only 30-50% accurate for negatives, but like 96%+ for positives.
Another interesting fact, neither my mother, my father, my grandparents, nor myself have ever had a stomach bug (norovirus). I'm the designated clean-up guy when it goes through our house. Wife's had to go to the ER twice for shots to stop it, and get IV's due to dehydration. I've never had it.

The shortages of azithromycin are (now) in Australia and China. Our US shortage was in the middle of summer, but it's better now. But worldwide there are shortages where there used to be very few, of many drugs.

It suuuuckkkked. I remember even my freaking hair hurt. I remember going to the doctor to get a chest xray and having to have someone push me in a wheelchair to the xray room because I was too weak to walk.
Even standing up to press my chest against the metal square for the xray wiped me out. I remember having to go into the bathroom just to catch my breath after that. And I remember being freaked out after seeing the reactions of the doctors and my parents when they were looking at the results.

I don't wish pneumonia on anybody, even if just the walking kind.

The worst sickness I ever had was 8th grade stomach virus. I puked my guts out for almost a week. I got very dehydrated. Went to the doctor and they gave me a suppository, because I couldn't hold anything down.

Never been that sick before or since.
