Tonight was awful and I’d like a mulligan.

We just didn’t have it. We couldn’t hit shots, we couldn’t get stops, and we couldn’t get into a rhythm.
I suppose we were due for a night like this, but it still stinks.
We need to regroup. We must improve our defense. That’s going to hurt us moving forward if we don’t fix it. We can’t expect to hit 50% of our threes every game (although if we had shot 40% on threes tonight we would’ve won).
Give credit to Loyola. They played great. Excellent job by their fans too. They outnumbered ours at least 2:1. They were loud, they cheered a lot. and even brought their band (we didn’t).
We will get better. This was rough though.

He is beating the dead horse that Clemson doesn’t support its basketball team

Which is true.
Clemson fans get a lot more excited about good teams than they do average or below.
Judge’s argument is one about the chicken or egg.
Which comes first? Winning or the fans.
I’ve been around long enough to know that Clemson fans will turn out for a good basketball team.

Your comment does not describe the “normal” fan I hope. I’ve been a Tiger fan A LONG time, and have gone to most all home football games during that period and a large portion of the home basketball games. True fans don’t go just when we win.

Turning out to support a really good team doesn’t make us great fans.

It’s easy to show up and cheer when the team is great.
Yet I keep reading here that we have great fans because we camped out that time for tickets or really impressed Digger Phelps when GameDay was at Clemson. This makes us average fans, not great fans.
Blaming Brownell for being “mediocre” or for us playing “boring basketball” as reasons why we have poor fan support is lame. Just own it, we are a crappy fan base when it comes to basketball.
This isn’t why we lost last night, but over time, our lack of fan support does impact recruiting as well as wins.

wasnt a better option though.
You're hilarious. The basketball team has been putting a sub-par product on the court for the better part of a dozen years. The fan disinterest developed over time due to underachieving, the late game collapses, and the head-scratching coaching mistakes, like putting 6 players on the court. Have you ever seen that in your life, Ma'am? I know I haven't.
As usual, you're making stuff up and not holding the basketball staff FULLY accountable for the state of affairs.

I think your point was their fans turned out, even many coming from Chicago, and sending the band showed school support. I assume you were also hinting that we don't have that same support when we travel.
Having gone to grad school there I can tell you that basketball is the biggest thing at that school. Basketball pays some of the bills for athletics and creates a small national following, particularly when they roll out Sister Jean. They also have a very good men's volleyball program. Their basketball is our football so I'm not surprised they had good support.
No hidden meaning here, just making the point that their love and support for basketball is a singular focus for their school.

They also had thousands of fans in attendance, who were loud.
They still lost, but it was a great atmosphere!
Then our game started, and you could almost hear toilets flushing on the concourse level because there were so few fans. The ones there were mostly Loyola fans, or Auburn or Memphis fans who stuck around.
I haven’t seen the posted attendance for our game, but it couldn’t have been more than a thousand people.

Wonder how these matchups were determined? Auburn/Memphis is certainly a much more high profile game than Clemson/Loyola. I could see more Clemson fans making the effort to come see them play against Auburn, Memphis, LSU, etc. than a game in Atlanta vs. Loyola. Not a lot, of course, but some. There just hasn’t been much reason to get very excited about Clemson basketball in years, and it shows in fan attendance. A game against Loyola means absolutely nothing except maybe seeing if we get a NIT bid or not a few months down the road. Unfortunately it seems the team came into this game thinking the same thing.

empty seats, so in a way it looked as if we vastly outnumbered Loyola and those beige unis their staff was sporting.
Sometimes a team can just come out and play flat. Too early in the season to tell if last night was one of Brad's patented Wheel of Destiny outings or just an off night all around. Lots of opportunities ahead to rectify last night's dud.

Auburn also has a good team year in and year out under Pearl (can’t stand the guy) that competes at the very top of their league and makes the ncaa tournament. If Brad put that product on the court that pearl does Clemson fans would be more excited and show up (just like auburn people do now).
I think most Clemson fans are just numb to the mediocrity of the basketball program. Too many late blown leads or losses to teams we have no business losing to.

I don’t understand why losing games we aren’t supposed to
Dec 11, 2022, 10:25 AM

keeps being portrayed as a uniquely Clemson problem.
It’s a college basketball problem.
Fielding a decent basketball team isn’t nearly as hard as fielding a competitive football team. There are hundreds of solid college basketball teams. Mid-majors are a thing. You don’t have this in college football. Dominance every game is nearly impossible in college basketball.
Look around the ACC. FSU has lost multiple games this year that they shouldn’t have. Leonard Hamilton gets praised here a lot, and he is having a worse year than Brad ever has. They have lost to Siena, Troy, UCF, and Stetson, among others.
There are many examples of this in college basketball.
The point isn’t to excuse our performance last night, but to realize that off nights happen. There is a reason why you don’t see undefeated teams in college basketball, or usually anyone who comes close.

Being mediocre isn't just a Clemson problem
Dec 11, 2022, 11:29 AM

But we're the only ones silly enough to allow 13 years of it.
Are you really trying to say losing to a 4-5 mid-major, by 20(!), is an acceptable "thing"?
We've watched the inconsistent mediocrity and listened to this broken record for 13 years.
Buh-bye.

We lost because:
1. Our defense was poor. 2. Our offense was poor. 3. We never got into a good rhythm.
That’s it.
Would it have been nice to have the packed and loud arena that Auburn and Memphis had? Absolutely. Could our team have benefited from having as many or (gasp!) more fans than a much smaller school from Chicago? Absolutely! But that’s not why we lost, and I never said that it was.

You can't call out the football staff when we play poor offensively or defensively, or when "we never get in a good rhythm", but then you act like these are valid excuses for losing in basketball.
These types of disingenuous posts, in addition to your football trolling, are why the majority of the board voted to ban you.

This is funny. I didn't know the majority of the people on this board voted to ban the Judge? Can you provide the link because I would love to see the lack of logic behind the group wanting to ban him. (Next you will say I am him)
What you said is a contradiction.
1. Our defense was poor. 2. Our offense was poor. 3. We never got into a good rhythm.
He said these were the reasons why they lost. If he said the same thing about the football team it would be the same fricken thing.
These are points and if said about either football or basketball it's the same thing. How do you come up with your logic? You are just making up stuff to be mad at him, it's humorous.
Wake up he gave reasons why they lost and you twist it into something that makes you look so stupid. Wake up and stop reaching or making up reasons why you hate so much. You're an embarrassment to any type of logic or debate.

If Clemson fans had shown up in numbers they would have seen: 1. Poor defense 2. Poor offense 3. A team with little rhythm along with the bad turnovers
The fans would have traveled home as angry as ever. Some might have reached out to Neff to voice their frustration. Brownell should be glad Clemson folks didn’t invest the time and expense. Now in his 13th campaign, Brownell doesn’t get these kind of Quad 3 mulligans anymore. He used those up long ago. That’s it.

That shows they care.
Not going, then complaining about the team on TigerNet, doesn’t accomplish very much.
Showing up gives fans more ammunition to have a valid opinion. It also shows a prospective head coach that we care about basketball at Clemson.
We are an ACC team and we couldn’t even manage to take our pep band two hours down the road, or have a few hundred fans care enough to show up in a city with tons of Clemson alumni? Come on.

You’re obviously putting some blame on the lack of fans and band, so how much would Brown-L’s team lost by had those two things been in place? Just 14 points instead of 18?

If this was a football result - What would JK say?

Jk common stories:
Dabo refuses to use the portal - he is stubborn. Well JK - Brad uses the portal a lot - because he can’t recruit or retain. If the portal is the answer to the problem - then why does Brad not have several natties? Dabo will use the portal when it is needed, not simply to appease you.
Dabo hired coordinators not qualified. Well JK - Brad has hired assistants for 13 years and nothing to show for it. Dabo has 2 natties, 8 conf championships and our “down” year - is ranked 7 and going to Orange Bowl. Is the equivalent of Brad reaching the elite 8.
Dabo hired CJ and is not liked and why we don’t have more 5 star running backs. Hummm, 3 really good backs and 1 leaves (3rd team). More BS from JK.

If we need to shoot 40% on 3 pointers to win I believe that is a problem. I know we were shooting 42% coming into the game but 40% is hard to sustain and would be a pretty lofty goal for the season.
I would like to see a lot more of the give and go type movement that Tyson and Hall ran successfully once in the first half. We have too many guys standing around the 3 point arc. I know Tyson can shoot the 3 but he and Hall are our bigs so they need to be playing on the block more. Especially on nights when his early 3s all hit the front of the rim like last night.
And like I said last week, Hemenway is one dimensional. He can be deadly if he is allowed to catch and shoot the 3 but if that is not available he becomes totally ineffective offensively as was the case last night. He played the most minutes of anyone and shot 1/3 for 3 points. If he is going to play that many minutes he has to be more productive.
We need a lot more offensive rebounds. See comment above about too much standing around the 3 point line.
Don’t get mulligans at this level. I’ll bet the football team would like to have one vs USuC just as bad. They hit the 3s and we didn’t. Living and dying with the 3 ball is fun to watch on a good night but also results in blow-outs like last night on bad nights. I would prefer we leave the 3s to Hemenway, Hunter, Galloway and Beadle and develop a little power game inside to help on nights the 3s aren’t falling.
As far as the band, final exams start tomorrow so that may have factored into the decision not to take the band.

to win.
Ball movement wasn’t as good last night. I’m sure Loyola had something to do with that, but I would’ve liked to see us adjust better.
We had 7 offensive rebounds last night. How many do you want to see us have?
I thought we got the ball inside to the post a good bit, we just didn’t convert enough of those chances.

Offensive rebounds will vary based on shooting percentage. Since we missed 33 shots I would say we should have had at least 10. I’m really surprised we had 7. Didn’t seem like that many. The announcers even commented on how many one and done possessions we had in the first half. But then again we had several possessions in the middle part of the first half where we didn’t even get a shot off so that may have made it seem worse.
PJ did miss a couple of opportunities from the block. My comment had more to do with Tyson going 0/5 on 3s and 4/10 from inside the arc. Where would you rather see him shoot from?
When the ball movement isn’t good, Hemenway is going to be ineffective. He played 35 minutes, only attempted 5 shots and only made one. Maybe try someone else? Do we have anyone who is good at creating off the dribble when the ball movement isn’t working? Maybe Beadle?

It is the coaches job to motivate and have the team ready regardless. Brownell is a very financially secure man at this point. It’s past time to end that money train

I feel that we were motivated last night. We played hard, we just didn’t execute.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have great fan support though?
Don’t you think that helps our football team?

I get your point about wanting more fan support but human nature prevails. People will come and support a consistent winner. It is the old adage of which came first, the chicken or the egg. They won't keep coming until they see some proof that they are going to be entertained and feel good when they leave (most of the time).
I know that kind of sucks for now but I think that is reality. It is also why I feel strongly we need a change at the top and a coach who can recruit and breathe new life into the program. I'm really not a Brad hater. I don't know him but I'm sure he is a good man but he has had more than enough time to turn things around. I know we can blame a lack of resources and support but there are other programs around the country that find a way without all of those same resources.
Heck, take Loyola as an example. They have made the big dance in 3 of the last 5 years and a run to the Final Four in 2018 and a Sweet 16 in 2021.

But I reference the old saying, “if you build it they will come”. I have no doubt the fans would support a successful team. I went to the Bellarmine game and had an enjoyable time because I was spending time with my brother, however minus the last 5 minutes of the game it was as boring as watching paint dry. Winning would definitely help but I do not see the X’s and O’s from our coach. I actually like the man as a person. Admittedly I am not a basketball prodigy either

Technology you are wrong with your "worst coach in Clemson history"
The coach list below are all worse than BB. They have lower winning percentages which shows BB is not the worst since all listed below are worse than he has been. Yes even Rick Barnes isn't as good as BB is at Clemson.
Oliver Purnell Larry Shyatt Rick Barnes Cliff Ellis Bill C. Foster Tates Locke Bobby Roberts

Judge, it seems Brad almost never does as well on the road. He does not seem to be a good road coach. Is there a reason for that?

I'm going to choose to look at this as basketball's "ND game" and assume they just had an off night. Good coaches help their teams rebound and get back on a roll very quickly. This is Brad's chance to show this season will be different than the past. I hope he is up to the challenge.
I have a feeling Neff will be watching very closely as well...

I think we need to have a backup plan when things aren’t going well outside! Maybe go to a 2 big man set inside and go after that board! Drive the lanes etc! I saw a lot of people shooting outside shots and bolting back! Nobody going after rebounds. One and done.

I’ll give Brownell credit - This team has good enough talent to have a successful season.
The problem is the coaching and the discipline are just not up to par.
We got drummed by an inferior opponent last night. Same can be said about the loss to the gamecocks. Neff and Clements just need to decide if we want to be good at basketball or not.

Didn't we already have a mulligan for a bad Coot team just a few weeks ago? How many mulligans are we going to need this season? We still have another 3 months of basketball to go and haven't even got into conference play yet.
