I posted a couple of days ago that my dogs are both at the end... today is the day we will put them down.

They were the best dogs, as Golden Retrievers usually are. When we went to select Robert Douglas out of his litter, there was a 1 year old more reddish Golden that had been returned because the owner was moving to California in a very small apartment. She was happy to see everyone. Anywho, we chose a male out of the litter that had big ole hips and the fuzziest butt.

A couple of weeks later, when we go to pick Robert Douglas up... the happy reddish one is still there... so, we headed home with a several week old fuzz-butt who we call Doug... and an unexpected surprise, the reddish golden named Rosa Maria, who we call Rose.

They were the best dogs ever... so loving and playful. When we had our first child, we read where the dog's favorite should not be the one to carry the child in. So, when we got back from delivery, I went in first to let the dogs know that they are still loved. I kneeled down and the came running up to me... and then walked right past. They went straight to the Mrsjoetiger, did not jump up on her, but they reared back on their legs to raise up to see what she was carrying... they knew to be gentle.

We were cautious with them around the new baby, but it quickly determined that it was unnecessary. We have physical photos of all three of them taking a nap with the little tiger... both curled around her... surrounding her.

My pup is not even 6 months old and I'm already dreading that day. This may have to be my last dog.

They have been there through everything... they were there when my oldest son was born, and of course, treated him the same way. They were inside dogs for a while...

They would play a game where Rose would be on one side of the kitchen table and Doug would be on the other... Rose would lunge at Doug, who would take off and slam into the wall. Rose would then lunge at him again... Doug would push off and slam into the other wall. They did this back and forth for several minutes at a time... until Doug's but busted through the wall. Then they both went over to look at the hole. Later, the decided they would start eating the drywall and made the hole huge.

You can kinda see the start of the hole behind my daughter.

They were there when I did the major renovation on my house and added a basement. When I took pictures of my kids in the backyard, they were always with them. Any time anybody was outside, they were with them... because they loved us like only a dog can. They were always there... with us... through everything.

So some fun stories... about 7 or 8 years ago, they ran off one winter night. Well, it was a record cold. It got down to 6 degrees. I typically dont worry about them if they ran off, because they would eventually come back. But this night was a record cold. A neighbor and I bundled up and searched for them for hours. I continued until 2 am. I eventually gave up. I got ready for bed and decided I would drive around one more time, to no avail. As I was heading home I thought I saw two sets of eyes glittering at the end of the cul-de-sac.

I sped down to the end of the road and jumped out... and was greeted by Doug and Rose, as happy as could be, tail wagging. They had decided to play in the creek as well, so they had plate mail icesheets on their body and ice cycles that were hanging to the ground... and again, as happy as could be.

They were always together and got into a mess with each other all the time.

Another fun story...

I had some buddies over for a campfire. One of them said, Joetiger, did you drink my old fashion? No, I have been tending the fire the whole time... well, it is gone. At that point, Doug burps, stands up... staggers to me, and falls over. We all had a good laugh watching my drunk dog through the night, stagger, looking at us with his drunken face... even having to literally pull his tail out of the fire because one of his flops landed his tail IN THE FIRE... and he didnt care.

You have to make a boring trip to the dump... make it memorable by taking your kids and dogs.

They loved baths (you are welcome jounge)... they would sit there and let the warm water wash over them... you could wash them forever and they would love it... then as soon as the went outside, they would both run around with their front legs turned to the side and their back legs plowing them through yard as the got that horrible clean smell off and got back to being dogs.

Fun snow day... much more fun with dogs that plow you over when you are trying to take a family pic.... THEY ARE PART OF THE FAMILY TOO!!!!

They LOVED the kids... absolutely adored them. THey followed them wherever they went... as long as they were close by, they were happy. If they got petted... oh, all the more better. If the kids were sitting on top of them pulling their face... it didnt matter. They were getting touched... and thats the bestest.

Rose was always so sweet and tried to do whatever you wanted her to. I would lay down and say, Rose, come lay down. She would come laydown beside me with her head on me. I would start saying, Rose, LAY DOWN, COME ON GIRL... getting excited. I would say it over and over... every time she would get up and lay down in a different way... always with her head laying on me... always with her tail thumping the floor so hard.

Doug as sweet and stubborn. He could hear if the door did not close all the way... after a while, he would push his way in. I would hear the door open, and turn around and see dog waltzing in... then the same process started. DDOOOUUUUGGG! calling his name in a shameful, what have you done voice. He would lower his head because he was soooo sorry... but keep walking in until I got up to him. Then he would flop over and roll over on his back.... cause he was sooo sorrryy. Go out Doug (he would budge). I shove him with my foot (go out Doug). He lays on his side. I shove him with my foot, again (go out Doug). He gets up to a sitting position. I shove him with my foot, yet again (go out Doug). He gets up and sadly walks to the door... his head slyly on a swivel while trying to act like he is sooo soorryy. Then he finds his target... takes off running, grabs a show/toy/sock, whatever is small enough for him to grab and run out the door. EVERY TIME. I was never once annoyed by it... I will miss it.

Them getting into the basement and on the couch... me telling them they need to go out. Doug telling me what he thinks about the whole situation.

These were the best dogs... the absolute best. We got them together... the lived together, p;ayed together, loved me and my family together... it is fitting they take this next journey... together.

I will miss them. I will miss the love that they have for me. I will miss the love they have for my kids.

As the old saying goes... I hope one day, I become the man that my dogs think I am. But in reality... they know who I am... they just dont care about my faults and failings... they just love... love like only dogs can.

I will miss them dearly.

Robert "Doug" Douglas
Rosa "Rose" Maria

We had the Vet come to the house. I physically cried when I opened the door. I didn't physically cry when my parents or sister died. We still talk about Winston almost daily. I've had 5 or 6 dogs, but none affected me like him.

It gets better. Mostly now I think back about him with love and not the pain of losing him. Wifey cried for months, but not anymore.

"I wonder at the fate that, out of the incalculable void, brought the two of us together for our mortal moment on this planet." - Willie Morris

We know the road always ends here with our dogs... and yet after the heartbreak, we go right back out and get more, knowing again we'll cross this painful road one day.

It never gets easier. I've been through it too many times, and yet... I do it again. We currently have two litter mates who are inseparable, kind of a similar situation to yours. They're young but sometimes I think about how devastating it's going to be when they both go.

Your story of how they acted around your daughter just highlights what incredible creatures they are in our lives.

Cheers to Robert Douglas and Rosa Maria and all they did for your family. May they find those tennis balls today somewhere on a golden shore and chase each other just like they did in their youth.
