Two Clemson coaches make ESPN top-100 coaches ranking
Two Clemson coaches made the top-40 of a 100-best coaches ranking of the last 50 seasons by ESPN on Friday ($). That, of course, is led by two-time national championship coach Dabo Swinney at No. 7 overall, just ahead of Kansas State's Bill Snyder and just behind USC's John McKay. I think what Dabo has done at Clemson is more impressive all things considered.
It’s hard to quibble with that top-five to be honest. Urban is a great coach and he did win a championship at two different programs, which is very difficult.
I suspect in five or 10 years Dabo will be in that number six spot. Two more national championships and Dabo will move into the top five. As good as Urban is if Clemson wins 2 more titles Dabo Will deserve to be ranked higher.

Nick Saban at LSU-Bama, and Urban Myer at Florida-OSU, both HC's had a history of winning big time FB before Dabo had ever coached as a HC. Dabo has won two NCs at the school that gave him his first job as a HC, and at a school that hasn't done much since Danny Ford was forced out at Clemson in 1989. IMPO, Dabo is the best bc he done more with less starting out in his first time ever head coaching job at Clemson!!!

you are absolutely right!dabo had to build a program from the ground up.he had to depend on his own insincts, energy, and vision.the other, bigger programs had more history, money, media support, etc. which made it much easier to recruit talent.he belongs in the top 5 right now.

Put Dabo at Fla, OSU, LSU, or Bama, and he would win at the highest level if they hand Dabo all the keys just as Clemson has done with Dabo. Dabo is a CEO/HC that has all the smarts that it takes to hire a winning staff, play, and win championship FB with complete backing of the admin!!!

All of you are missing the point.

This is not about your potential going forward.
This is not about what would you would or could potentially do at a different school. All things being equal.
This is purely based on what you have accomplished.
Dabo is about where I think any rational reasonable person would expect. He should pass McKay over the next five years and with two more championships over the next 10 years he would move into spot number five ahead of Urban Meyer.
To end up ranked any higher than fifth on the list he is going to have to win 3+ national championships over the next 10 to 15 years. Because this list is head coaches based on who is the best in college football history based on historical performance. Dabo’s got some work today to break into the top five!

As much as I like and respect Dabo I think hes positioned about right. IMO ahead of McKay as USC was a machine in that Era but the man was a legend whom I respect for what he did. Dr Tom Osborne, Saban, Bear, no question. I would also put Coach Bowden up there if not ahead, may have missed his name. And Urban? as others have pointed out he coached up Florida and Ohio state, but ALSO went undefeated at Utah and turned Bowling Green into a solid football team, getting a lot of kids drafted. The man can coach his backside off, even if I'm less than a fan of some of his antics. I expect CDS will move up that list in time. Go Tigers.
