The story behind "COOTS" ?

Feb 1, 2011, 12:25 PM

Can someone give me a quick explanation of how USC players/fans became known as "COOTS" ? I am a Clemson fan, but did not attend the school and am not from the area so I have never been sure what it all meant ? thanks in advance! Go tigers!

a slow stupid looking bird or a foolish simple-minded slow-witted person. Considering their mascot and the lions share of their fans base, it's an entirely fitting and appropriate reference.

If you aren't standing behind our troops overseas, how about standing in front of them?!

Here's a different take on "coots"........many of us Clemson boys are from the low country of SC and are avid outdoorsmen and DUCK HUNTERS! Duck hunters often encounter coots while duck hunting and the trick is to make sure of your target and not mistake a coot for a REAL DUCK and therefore waste a good shotgun shell because coots are worthless aquatic fowl (members of the grebe family), cannot be consumed, literally stink and don't even have webbed feet.....not even worthy of being members of the duck family. We often called coots "trash" because of their lowly status. Therefore: coot = trash = gamecock = coot.....get it?

Coots is for "bird" & Tater is for "farmer?" ***
