Swinney comp for Adam Randall, more on WR group

2

Oct 2, 2023, 8:34 PM

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was asked on his call-in show about his receiver group and how he might play them with Tyler Brown emerging and when Antonio Williams returns, and Swinney used the opportunity to break down the group as it stands.

"We love our room," Swinney said. "And we got a couple great ones joining up next year. We're excited about it and finally been able to create some depth there. So hopefully that will continue to be the case. It's going to be very, very competitive. That's when we've been at our best. (When) we've had lot of competition and a lot of options. Ability to create some diversity with how we position our guys."

Adam Randall saw his role replaced by Troy Stellato up at Syracuse, with Stellato playing 61 snaps and Randall rendered to seven plays. Stellato has 14 catches for 141 yards and a TD through four games, while Randall has been held to seven catches for 78 this season. Swinney had glowing words for both.

"This is a guy who can play the game," Swinney said of Stellato. "He's not going to do anything that's surprising to any of us here. Nobody has been able to see the kid. This is one of the highest-recruited guys we've been able to bring in here, He's tough. He's scrappy. He can really run. He has instincts for the game...Super exciting to finally be getting reaping the benefits of him..."

"Adam Randall, we've not recruited a more talented guy than Adam Randall. I know right now we're talking about his potential. He's just kinda working through a funk. We've got to just get him playing like we think he can play. And eventually that's going to happen...He's a little bit like Cornell Powell was. If you remember Cornell, it was kinda frustrating. Cornell just kinda lost his confidence a little bit and just didn't play with the tempo and intensity that we needed from him and he got himself out of it and he was a fourth round draft pick. Adam has got big-time ability and he's just a true sophomore and had an ACL (injury) last year. So we love the group."

More from Swinney on the Clemson WRs:

"The emergence of Tyler Brown, really really exciting. Beaux Collins has had an awesome year. He's been our leader and most polished guy. He's a true junior and has missed some time as well. Cole Turner is going to be the Stellato I guess. No one really talking about him because we redshirt him last year and he plays a couple games and had high hopes for him and now he's out for the year (injury), but I really think Cole Turner is going to be a superstar. This kid is a special talent... Noble Johnson is really improving. He got our scout player of the week this week. He's a guy that's getting better. Ronan (Hanafin) is a guy you haven't seen but he's improving. Tink (Misun Kelley) is going to redshirt but he's played a few snaps."

Swinney didn't address Williams' injury progress in the answer. Williams has missed the last two games with an ankle injury.

Agree Beau Collins is polished in interviews

Classy and well spoken. Class act parents. On and off the field, Collins is a junior leader, but he seems to be slightly behind younger Tyler Brown, Antonio Williams and possibly Stellato with his separation, hands, and blocking skill sets. Four good ones. High hopes for Adam Randall who has not yet regained his speed from last year's knee injury and Collins upon his return from injury next year.
