Speaking of Russia...population continues to decline...

https://www.newsweek.com/russia-classifies-population-data-birth-rate-2074460

From the article:

Projections estimate that Russia's population will fall to about 132 million in the next two decades. The United Nations has predicted that in a worst-case scenario, by the start of the next century, Russia's population could almost halve to 83 million.

In March, Raksha said Russia might be seeing its lowest birth rates since the late 1700s. Births dropped by 6 to 7 percent in February and by 3 to 4 percent in March, the demographer said.

In the first quarter of 2025, between 293,000 and 294,000 births were registered in Russia—2.4 percent lower than the first quarter of last year, he said.

"March 2025 likely recorded the lowest number of births on the territory of today's Russian Federation since the late 18th to early 19th century," Raksha wrote on his Telegram channel.

It's crazy how low a birth rate can get when you live in a state of hopeless serfdom, have massive alcohol issues, send hundreds of thousands of healthy men in their 20s and 30s to war and launch a war that leads hundreds of thousands more to leave the country.

What a country to hitch your fate to. Trump flips the bird to Europe, with its $20 Trillion economy, western values, and democratic principles...and cozies up to Russia with its $2 Trillion economy, disappearing population, unprovoked wars of aggression and constant efforts to undermine our society and democracy. What a genius.

Can you tell us what our President has "hitched" to Russia, please?

granting Russia "Trump's Most Favored Country" status, go ahead.

Do you think Vladimir Putin would sit in the Oval Office and be shown a montage of War Crimes his country has committed? Civilian sites and people bombed? Evidence of their cyberattacks on western countries' infrastructure? Imagine the pile of files we could put on the table for that meeting? "Dead...dead...dead...".

Do you think Trump will ever refer to Putin as "Governor Putin"? Did you know Canada's GDP is larger than Russia's? That their economy is more diversified than Russia's?

No country has escaped Trump's vitriol EXCEPT Russia. No leader has escaped Trump's vitriol EXCEPT Putin.

We block resolutions condemning Russia's attacks on civilians.
We refuse to frame the war as the clear act of unprovoked aggression it is. We blame Ukraine...we blame NATO...we blame the former administration and we blame Europe.

We signal that we are excited to do "deals" (is anyone else tired of hearing about deals?) with Russia while we flip the bird to every other long-time ally.

The goodwill extended to a perpetual antagonist of the free world, lead by a dictator, is so ridiculous that you wouldn't believe it on a movie screen.

Only on TNet can you get a libby worrying about Russia's population

... who then turns around and blames the Right for worrying about Russia's young males by trying to end a stale, useless war.

1) I am not a "libby". Only a Trump supporter would be so diluted as to think that only Libby's disagree with his policies.

2) I am not "worried" about Russia's population. As far as I'm concerned, the lower the better. Not that I want anyone to die either, but if they all want to just stop having babies, that's fine. That country is a cancer on the world and has been for decades. The world would be better off if we started clean and try to rebuild, preferably in smaller pieces and de-nuked. I realize that's wishful thinking but I'm just trying to convey my feelings regarding Russia's declining population.

3) I don't blame "the Right" for anything. I don't even know what that looks like anymore. I blame Trump's party...whatever that is...for a ridiculous foreign policy toward Russia and Ukraine.

4) You wouldn't call it a stale, useless war if 20% of America were under Chinese control, they had attacked us for the second time in a decade, their rhetoric gave the impression that we really have no right to exist and every indication was that a pure cease fire would just be an opportunity for them to reload. Or maybe you would.

5) If Trump were smart and wanted to end the war, he would have flooded Ukraine with weapons and resources. Putin doesn't want piece. He wants Empire. Putin doesn't understand suffering or reason. He understands power and strength, and Trump's acquiescing to Putin shows Putin weakness. Instead, in the name of "peace", he seems to think Ukraine should surrender. What a leader.

Putin has been president of Russia for 13 years. I think that if he intended to use nukes, he would have done it by now. It's that mutually assured destruction thing.

I think you are right that the "threat" of using nukes is a much better weapon

for Putin than actually using Nukes. One keeps the West at bay...the other probably rains fire down on his country.

Fair enough. But what is our definition of "SOME" attention?

It can't be "oh well, they have nukes, I guess we can't really get involved". Nukes can't be a license to do whatever you want. We don't let France, UK, North Korea, India, Pakistan, Israel or China do "whatever they want".

The messaging has been clear (or was clear before Trump), that the use of any form of Nuke would be a bridge too far for Russia. I believe it would mean the end of Russia. It probably SHOULD mean the end of Russia, because if it didn't, it might mean the end of a lot more. Imagine Russia using a nuclear weapon to support its conquest of Ukraine. Where then is the line for any nuclear power? There isn't one.

Anyway, in my opinion they've gotten the mileage they can out of being a Nuclear Power. No one is threatening to invade them (well, unless you count Ukraine, but that's only fair. Oh, and their own mercenaries...but that's just funny.). The western world's complete commitment to not allowing one sovereign country to simply take over another sovereign country cannot reasonably be considered a "nuke" situation, and if Putin thinks it is, all the more reason he's got to go!
