So the ACC is resorting to suing Maryland for the

Nov 28, 2012, 9:19 AM

$52 million exit fee. The amount of the fee is 3 times the ACC's annual operating budget, not a flat $50 million, as had been stated.

Now that this is a civil matter, and everyone is getting lawyered up, I see many possible roads going forward. I always saw the ACC as a pretty stable enterprise, either adding members or staying pat, especially after the ND deal. With a charter member like Maryland leaving, I don't feel as secure in that idea as I once did.

I think it is also telling that Maryland and FSU voted against the fee, and now, Maryland is leaving. Anyone else have any opinions on this?

$50mil, then I'll feel a lot more secure. If Maryland can weasel their way out for significantly cheap then I'll be worried.

"Honor and loyalty", lulz.

You use word like 'honor', 'code', 'loyalty'...

Nah, I'm not going anywhere with this, because I really can handle the truth.

We follow orders, son. We follow orders or people die. It's that simple. Are we clear?

Yes sir.

Are we clear?

It's odd that the Maryland representatives are saying...

Nov 28, 2012, 9:25 AM

"Well this is just a penalty for leaving!"

Um, yeah? Isn't that clearly understood? Surely you're not going to court over that?

Now, if there are other entanglements that we don't know about, or the 'penalty' being linked to conference operating costs, e.g. that make the fee excessive or irrelevant, let's hear about it.

But yeah, clearly the fee was about dissuading schools from bolting.

I know people hate on the ACC,

Nov 28, 2012, 9:26 AM

and I'm not a huge fan, but I see a lot of comments like "I hope the ACC implodes" and "Screw the ACC".

What these folks don't get is if the ACC goes the way of the Big East, Clemson may very well be left as a sideline viewer in the college football arms race - no money, and no way to get any money. You think we're behind SC now? Wait 'til about 10 years from now when they've made about another $100 MILLION MORE than we have over the same time span.

We need either an invite to join another conference (which is conspicuously absent at present), or even better, need the ACC to become a stable/strong conference that can compete on a national level with the SEC/Big12/B1G/etc.

Having said that - my confidence in the ACC is waning rapidly. After we (kinda) got ND, I thought we'd be OK. Now with Maryland leaving, in spite of a $50 million exit fee, I'm not so sure.

What I really worry about is Maryland getting out with a greatly reduced fee and FSU going "Hmmmmm" and saying See-Ya as soon as another conference comes calling - and having us left in the wreckage. I'm not so sure we're as "tied at the hip" with FSU as many think.

The next 1-3 years will be interesting to say the least.

IMHO, once the BCS is basically gone and the psuedo-playoff in place, Notre Dame will join the ACC in football. It will be a few years, but they'll need the conference affiliation to do it.

This court case is a VERY big deal.

Yeah, for all the rumors and counter rumors...

Nov 28, 2012, 9:33 AM

we need to be content with where we are and find a way to make it better. I dislike Swoffie, but you have to admire his desperation and thank God for the miserable Big East from whom we can poach with impunity.

Somehow, someway this conference needs to find a way to win in football and baxetball and make money or keep falling further and further behind as you say.
