Considering that he was CBed to go to Clemson until a few weeks ago. It definitely had to do with tampering.

The NIL wasn't a factor for him, but it sure took care of his family and therefore he went where the family benefitted the most! We have to remember that Mom has to sign the LOI for it to be binding.

the dream school thing means nothing, its replaced the last minute hat switch or t-shirt reveal
imagine a high school kid telling his parents his dream trip is london for years, then they tell you ok this summer you can go to any city you want in europe for a week, then the kid presents them a list of paris, rome, glasgow and dublin...............words have to meaning something otherwise it is nonsense.

Please. Can we all quit living in a make believe college football world.
Many, many coaches, broadcasters, analysts, and too many to list have for years made billions of dollars off the efforts and performances of young men between the ages of 17-22.
Billions.
Now that the one's who generated and continue to generate that money want a small part of it, tiger fans want to demonize them.
Get over it. Every single one of these players recruited by Clemson are recruited for their football skills, what they can contribute to making Clemson a winning FB program. They are given athletic scholarships. They are not recruited as academic contributors and given academic scholarships. Their main reason for being recruited and their main reason for attending collge is to play football and hopefully PLAY in the NFL.
IF I was a player being recruited for a top college FB team, you better believe I would be signing with the one that paid the most. They are also going to be be paid after they sign. That's what that 22 million player revenue sharing money is for. Maybe there are teams promising them a big payday for that as well and that also figures into the deal.
In any event, I don't think it is fair to critisize these parents and or players for going for the money.

Fair, but as you are speaking of players now as more being employees with a "job" of playing football, as in other employment situations, it should be acknowledged that going for the most money isn't always the best choice. There are other things to consider as well. Particularly true when your career span is 5 years at most and not 40. There will be some, maybe many players harmed in the long term as a result of chasing more money only.

It wouldn’t if it was always “the same amount of risk” but it isn’t. That’s the point. It’s the same reason you don’t quit your job every year to chase a higher salary. All things aren’t equal or the same qamount of risk.
I don’t think it’s hard to imagine a scenario where less money but better coaching, atmosphere and development is better in the long term than more money with the opposite.

There are no guarantees against a career ending injury in college ball. NIL money up front is a reasonable hedge against it.

These kids, maybe their families, embellish the “high life” buying cars, houses, jewelry, drugs with money that is only temporarily with them. Once the money is gone, how do they make the car payments? The mortgage? Give baby mamma that jewelry she has been accustomed to wearing? It’s a fantasy, and once the money is gone, the debt racks up. They live outside of their means because they weren’t educated on how to sustain their wealth. It’s never enough money.

If money is the key to CFB now I can accept that. Players have a right to make all the money they can and transfer at any time for more money if they choose (except mid-season). There's no obligation from the players at any time except during the season. So it needs to be a 2-way street. No obligation from the school except one semester at a time. A player may "unsigned" at any time and dropped from the team as well as dis-enrolled from the school at semester end. The team (school) should have the right to drop unproductive players and go to the portal to try and improve the team. It should be all about money on BOTH sides.

They should get some money. But this is out of control. They are getting 5 star meals daily. Free housing. Free elite coaching and development. Free 6 figure education. These kids aren’t professionals and this kid hasn’t played a snap of college football. I love a free market and all that but there has to be guard rails.

So says the injunction State of Tennessee got against the NCAA when they tried to go after Iamaleava for NIL.
Just another case of people trying to claim that things that were always illegal are somehow valid because the NCAA got away with it for decades.

I wish him the best of luck. By all accounts, a good player and person. He's working within the current system. Can't say that I would choose differently.
Having said that, I'd be wrong to say that I don't want him to suit up for the Tigers.

I have no issue with players choosing different schools. I do take issue with the cognitive dissonance between stating Clemson is a "dream school," yet, Clemson not making the top 4 with the clarifier, "NIL was not part of the decision."
Seems quite implausible.

There are a lot of reasons.
2
Aug 15, 2024, 1:08 PM

He might've had five dream schools, and we were ranked behind the other four.
Perhaps his criteria changed.
Maybe he had experiences at those schools which elevated them in his ranking.
Or maybe he had an experience at Clemson that changed his mind about us and made us less appealing.
Our perceptions of people and places can, and often do, change over time. That's especially true when we are getting to know someone well.
Who knows, maybe someone did offer him life changing money and we didn't. But to always default to that is weak-minded, and fails to account for all of the many factors that go into these huge decisions for players.
And again, if we are going to assume that a player chooses another big time program over us because of money, then we should also assume that a player we get over those other programs chose us because of money. Right?!?
