Portal

Sep 21, 2023, 9:57 PM

From ESPN article:

“In 2022, there were 2,918 players who entered the portal, up from 2,531 in 2021. In this current season, nearly 33% of the total games started by FBS players have come from players who have transferred via the portal, according to SportSource Analytics. At quarterback, a position that has seen plenty of movement via the portal, 54.9% of the passing yards thrown this season have come via transfer players.”

Yeah, I guess that’s why a third of starters and 55% of the QB production comes from portal players. Total scrubs

Root for another team if you don’t like what Dabo does.

No one brought up Dabo at all. This is a discussion about the viability of the portal. Many others have claimed that these are kids who just couldn’t make it on their other teams and are just trying to find more playing time. There are a number of players in the portal that are clearly better than that.

Clearly, you're one of the worst posters on TNET

You’re really gonna put that outcome on South Florida? Couldn’t have had anything to do with Alabama’s struggles at qb which has transfers? Or the fact that Alabama was playing the first non-SEC true road game in like years? I’m sure it’s the Bulls radically portal improved team. Despite being anemic on offense the entire game.

Probably taking into consideration players who transferred two or more years ago, Nix, Williams, Travis, Ewers, and many others. If you take the last 3 years of portal QBs I'm surprised its not more than 55%.

And those same QBs would be starting at the school they were at most likely. Example Hartman for ND and the Mich QB from Iowa. Its the BS that good players are being bought from teams that developed them. NIL and Portal sucks!

That is the flaw with these stats. I want to see a stat that shows how many of the starting transfers magically had their new home right after their name was entered into the portal.

lol. These numbers need to be for CFP only teams

Sep 22, 2023, 7:59 AM

99% of college football players are not even good enough to go pro.
it's just s seconds being passed around for $$$

What are "CFP only teams"?

More than one thing can be true at the same time.

A lot of portal kids might be starters on their new teams. But if they were 2nd or 3rd string on their previous teams, they most likely transferred to a lower-tier program or to a program that happened to have a marked lack of talent at their position.

And sure, there are going to be some exceptional cases where the coaching staff at program A doesn't see the potential of a player and relegates him to the bench only to find out the kid could ball out under a new system and staff at program B.

And Dabo could open his mind to the portal and we *still* might not take anyone, because the best Dabo can tell them is "You can come here and compete for a starting position, but we've already recruited mostly 4* and 5* kids at every position."

In point of fact, Dabo *has* taken in some transfer portal players over the years, not to mention that recently we've had a full cupboard scholarship-wise. That will shake out with the end of the COVID bonus year.

Ok, I'll clear up the confusion on Dabo vs. the portal

Sep 22, 2023, 10:32 AM

Clemson just like the other bluebloods can cherry pick. The portal is a 'pass through' for bluebloods. The deal for the top players is made before they enter their name.

For non-blueblood schools and 3 star and lower players the portal is a conundrum of epic proportions.

Even more simple, this season via back channels a couple of wide receivers (even exceptional players on lower tier teams wanting to play for Clemson), and maybe an OL were there for Clemson to take.

However, Dabo doesn't run off players to open up scholarships. So here we are.

GO TIGERS!!
