Off topic any mechanics / lawyers...

I'd like your thoughts on a catch 22 issue. I have a Mazda CX 5 with check engine light. Diagnostic test shows manufactures code P011A at local shop. They said it's do to a bad heater core. Anyways, the vechicals tag needs to be renewed and Emissions done so I took it to be tested and it failed Emissions with same P011A code. The heater core which has nothing to do with air pollution to my knowledge made it fail...now the catch 22 part. Per Mazda a 2013 heater core for cx5 is on national back order till end of Feb anticipated. By the time it can be fixed the cars tag will have already expired since it can't pass until fixed. Per the GA states clean Air Force department owners can only get a repair waiver for a failed test once they show they have spent $899 toward the fix. I can not spend the money for a repair until the part is available. So again the tag will be expired due to a heater that's on back order. Any suggestions on what to do? Would flushing the heater and or replace the thermostat then driving for a week pass the E test or will the light stay on and I waste more money? Should I talk with a lawyer since I want to get the vechical to state standards but can't since part is on back order and a 3rd party part would not come with mazda warranty? Should state make an exception? Thanks as always go Tigers!

You push it off of the edge Bald Rock, SC. It’s been a while and the mountain is hungry for some new metal.

I know some people that actually did this.
There's a small truck graveyard hidden beneath the cliffs of Caesar's Head along Persimmons Ridge road hidden in the trees from people doing this to get out of car payments.

I had a similar problem with one of my kids cars. Needed fixing before it could pass inspection. He took it someplace else and it passed.

Go to NAPA, Autozone, etc and buy an aftermarket heater core

and have it installed at a reputable shop. You'll even save money - unless your CX-5 is still under warranty.

Mazda is a Ford. That’s as American as you can get! If was a Mazda made in Japan, he wouldn’t be having problems!

Couple if options:
1) Cut your losses and move to a state that doesn't care about emmisions, like the great state of SC. 2) Drive back to the DMV. When you're a block away, pull over, pop the hood, disconnect the battery, turn on/off the headlights to discharge capacitance, reconnect the battery, and try again with all the codes cleared. Worth a try.

Sign the title over to someone in SC, other than a Clemson athlete, pay the sales tax (unless close family, they may be exempt), property tax and insurance.

Call junk yard for used heater core
Jan 7, 2018, 5:52 PM

See if cx3, 5, 7 use same heater core and a used one from a yard.
When they test emissions, don't they plug into the connection instead of looking at light? Turning light out wouldn't help.

Re: P011A Code - Take Mazda to Advance Auto

Parts and they will do a free code read (and give you a print out!). You didn’t provide the /engine/trans, etc., but a general Google search shows more likely code is a signal to ECU from one of two temp sensors. One is near the heater core. Might still be the heater core (does engine warm up and heater work ok?) but sensor should be cheaper and easier to replace. Heater cores are typically a PITA!
Hope this helps.

Engine warms up ok, heater only blows cold air. Was told by mazda it's a known issue and a lot of people are having heater core issues and is the main reason it's on national back order. I could go after market but that voids warranty. I was told on Reddit that a mechanic could loop the heat hose and bypass the ECU for coolant temp sensor code and that would pass the test. If true my next question would be is that hard to do/ get to under the hood? Asking because I was told to replace would be about 12 hours labor since you have to take out the dash to get new one in. I wouldn't want to go through all the trouble for a bypass that might not even work once back at Emissions.

If like most cars, the pressure hose and return hose should be on firewall under hood on passenger side. Don't know for sure but don't see why you couldn't disconnect and loop them there.

I have read it was a common problem and runs around 1700 to 2400 to repair. If that is true that is costly so I would call mazada and give them a piece of my mind since it seems to be a common problem with these cars it may not do any good but they may do something since you have some type of warranty.

Easy to route the heater hoses in a loop. They are located on the passengers firewall under the hood. All you have to do is pull both heater hoses off and add a connection between them and it should pass if you unhook the battery for ten minutes afterward and then drive 50-75 miles your codes will be reset and ready for inspection.

If the car doesn’t heat up it does not necessarily mean the heater core is bad. More likely it is an issue with the switch on the dash. Personally I would not hesitate to put after market parts on the car if it saved you enough money.

Don't see how it is your heater core. From what I researched I would try replacing ECT (engine coolant temp) sensors first. Heater core is for giving you heat. The sensors send signal to your PCM and if faulty could give you rich or lean exhaust, therefore causing failed emissions. Had a mazda once and will not own another. Parts are expensive.

Only two things can go wrong with this heater core.

According to this the heater core has no function but to radiate the heat off the cooling liquid. Anyone who tells you different just doesn't know what they are talking about or doesn't want to deal with your problem.
This is nothing but a small radiator. It might spring a leak or get stopped up but that's it. Find real technician and tell them to start with this:
Low engine coolant level
Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor Faulty engine coolant thermostat
Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor harness is open or shorted
Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor electrical circuit poor connection
Read more: https://www.autocodes.com/p011a.html
I have two guesses. Either the mechanic didn't want to fool with tracking down an electronic issue or he wanted an arm and leg so they told you it was a part that would cost a grand in labor to replace.

Likely is a computer problem rather than heater core. That can be a real chore to fix..... and pricey.

Have you taken this to a mechanic who is knowledgeable about a cars electrical system? This could be something as simple as a poor ground. Check your computer if you haven’t already. This is a problem that a good Mazda mechanic can fix and a good Ford man also should know about since the are ‘cousins’.

You should be able to have the light go off long enough to get it through inspection if the know the mechanic. Have you tried the salvage yards for a heater core? Have you googled this problem to see if the problem can be fixed? It may be something simple that you can do yourself. You might find a Ford heater core that is interchangeable with the Mazda.
