U.S. Route 78 is an 843.3 mile United States highway that runs from the west end at US 67/ AR 226 near Cash, Arkansas to the east end at Line Street in Charleston, South Carolina. The 142.2 miles of US 78 in South Carolina travel from the Georgia line near North Augusta to Charleston.
 
90 miles north of Charleston and 5 miles south of Myrtle is Myrtle Beach State Park. It is one of the 16 CCC built parks in SC (2 more after this). Cheraw was the first state park in development, but Myrtle Beach was the first to open on July 1, 1936. It is a 315-acre park built on land donated by Myrtle Beach Farms in 1934 with many original structures still in use including the 6 rental cabins if the popular campsites are not your thing. There is a mile of undeveloped beach in otherwise overdeveloped Horry County. The focal point of the beach is the pier for fishing, crabbing, wildlife watching, and sunrise/sunset viewing with the soothing ocean sounds. 7 picnic shelters and 2 gift shops are also relaxing venues. And the maritime forest with oaks and southern magnolias has been declared a National Trust Site, whatever that means.

Myrtle Beach State Park had superintendent, Bobby Turner that had been with the SC Park Service for over 40 years. He had been superintendent at MB State Park for 25.
He retired in 2010 with 48 years.

I remember staying with this good looking blonde back in 1979 at the Springmaid resort. We went to the Myrtle Beach State Park one day to explore. That was a good week.

When Clemson K/P Chris Gardocki handled punting and kicking duties for Clemson, he was a two-time All-American. He never missed an extra point at Clemson – not one! He then spent 16 (yes 16) seasons in the NFL primarily as a punter. What a special talent!

Only one player in NCAA history has ranked in the top 10 in the nation in punting and field goals per game in two different seasons and Chris Gardocki is that player. His abilities in both aspects of the game gave Clemson one of the top special teams in the nation from 1988-90.
In 1989, as a sophomore, Gardocki ranked sixth in the nation in field goals and was 10th in punting with a 42.7 average. As a junior, he was fourth in both areas, averaging 1.73 field goals per game to go with a 44.34 punting average.
The native of Stone Mountain, GA tied an ACC record for the longest field goal with a 57-yarder against Appalachian State in 1990, and saved his longest punt for his final punt in Death Valley, a 78-yarder in the 1990 South Carolina game. He concluded his career with 63 field goals and had a record 72 consecutive PATs. As a punter, he averaged 43.48 yards boot for his career, including a 39.1 net average. A one-step punter, Gardocki had just one punt blocked his entire career at Clemson and has never had a punt blocked in the NFL. The Tigers were 30-6 in Gardocki’s career.

He was fourth in punting and tied for fourth in placekicking in the nation as a junior becoming the second player in NCAA history to finish in the top 10 in both categories in the same season and the first to do it twice. When Bleacher Report published its All-Time Clemson team in 2009, it added the following:
“Punter: Chris Gardocki
In complete objectivity, Chris Gardocki should get the nod for both punter and place kicker. He was selected as an All-American for both and became the second player in NCAA history to rank in the top five for both punting and place kicking in the same season.
Amazingly, Gardocki never missed a PAT at Clemson, connecting on 72 straight.”

After Clemson:
The Chicago Bears selected Chris Gardocki with the 78th overall pick (3rd Round) in the 1991 NFL Draft. four seasons with the Bears (1991-1994), four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts (1995-1998), five seasons with the Cleveland Browns (1999-2003), and 3 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2004-2006). I suspect that 16 NFL seasons might be the longest NFL tenure of any Clemson players.
In his 15th NFL season, Gardocki won a Super Bowl ring in 2006. According to ClemsonTigers.com, Gardocki played a key role in helping the Steelers win the championship:
Former Tiger Chris Gardocki aided the Pittsburgh Steelers in their 21-10 Super Bowl victory over Seattle on Sunday. Gardocki had six punts for a 48.7 yard average, including a long of 60 yards. The punter also kicked a 54-yarder that was downed by the Steelers on Seattle’s 2-yard line.

Since retiring from football, Chris Gardocki has been a resident of Hilton Head. He was inducted into the South Carolina Hall of Fame in 2019.
