My conflicted basketball opinions

I have been a Brownell supporter. I truly believe Clemson will always face an uphill battle with being a successful basketball program. Clemson fans are traditionally fair weather supporters, when the team is good people watch, when the results are poor most fans are indifferent. In this regard I think a tradition lacking program like ours has always had a definitive ceiling. In our entire history we have never made it past the elite 8, and in our entire tourney history that has only occurred twice. Historically speaking, in a strong ACC (no longer the case), Clemson is happy to just make the post season tourney. Brownell has both elevated expectations while simultaneously highlighting defects. I believe we have reached the point where occasionally making the tourney while being competitive in the conference is no longer the measure for success. Controversial as it is Brownell is the most successful coach in Clemson history. He owns not only the most wins but, arguably 2 of Clemsons most successful seasons of all time. The question stands though, can the program continue to progress? Is Brownells ceiling as a coach also the ceiling for Clemson as a program? Could we actually hire better? Would they exit just like Barnes? I don't know these answers but losing to a team the caliber of McNeese St while concurrently signing him to a 6 year extension leaves a lot to be questioned.

People are so missinformed. All they really did is change the 5 year contract from last year to 6 yrs. Coach Brownell will probably retire in about 6 years at least.

If the reports are true then it is a 2 year extension for a six year contract. But the raise and buyout terms will be what matters. Last years was fairly conservative.

A little more detail. His last deal was 5 years $20 million total. The buyout was 50% remaining value year 1-2. 37.5% year 3-5. To fire after the 25-26 season would basically be a one year buyout - reasonable in today’s marketplace. If they go six years with similar 50% years 1-3 and 37.5% 4-6 he’s basically unfireable for the next three seasons. If he holds true to history, we’ll suck the next two years and then be just good enough to keep the party going in year 3. He has this down to a science.

If that's true a 1yr extension isn't the worst thing. However, my questions are still unanswered.
