Mel Kiper wants to ban 2 high safeties

ESPN must of given the barking orders that these isn’t enough offense for the casual TV viewers. I just don’t understand why everything must cater to offenses and if it doesn’t let’s ban it. They’re going to end up screwing themselves over one day fans are gonna just give up.

Right, so it is not all the political messaging and virtue signaling driving viewers away, it is the cover 2. Give me a break. People like to watch good defense just fine.

dang now Kiper and ESPN wanting to crack down of the players smoking weed! Remember when AfroMan's song was parodied with the Coots getting high?
But, I do agree, football is being changed to much and the offenses get away with murder while the defenses have to be careful not hurt anyones feelings!
Heck, did anyone see Altuve get chunked because he took his shoe off to prove to the umpire the ball hit his foot?

And, exactly how does he propose to do that?

Force the defense to have 10 guys within 7 yards of LOS at the snap?
And, even if you did that, you don't think the "safety" could drop into coverage at the snap?
Sorry, Mel. I think you are looking for "clicks." You know far more about football that to think your proposal is serious.

I don’t think he’s looking for clicks I literally think ESPN wants this as the lack of offense affects betting/fantasy their new golden goose’s. Look at what they did to baseball because of the new age player who’s making more than ever couldn’t figure out how to hit opposite of the shift. They want to water down all sports it’s pure insanity.

So, how do you implement it?

What rule could prevent a two (or three) high safety defense?

The way he was saying was forcing them closer to the line I would guess they would set a limit on how deep they could play which is insanely stupid

Middle LB lines up at normal depth. At snap of ball he turns and sprints to 17 yard depth, then turns around. Presto, cover 3.
We've all seen corners line up 4 yards off LOS and at the snap, they bail, dropping to 15 yards and, presto, you go from cover 1 look to cover 3 look instantaneously.

He’s also completely ignoring the fact that if teams would properly train OL and implement a run game the safeties would have to come up. He’s talking about “back in my day” like two high safeties didn’t exist then.

I think you are right here.
This is to cater to the "casual fan"!
Many fans on tnet appear to me as casual; as they only speak of the big explosive plays or TD's. That's not what football is all about. That is a part of it; but these folks see it as far more marketable. This is why you can barely touch a QB in football anymore. Or why a DB basically can't look to hard at a WR w/o being called for a D.P.I. It's tragic how they want to change the game that made a name for itself "how it was"! Stop changing it for these folks powers that be.

If NFL teams would try to run the ball some, the two high safeties wouldn’t be an option.

Exactly. Run the ball and gash the defense. That will force the defense to bring those safeties down.
Problem with running the football is; even a 8 yard carry "isn't pretty football" to a casual fan. The casual fan want big explosive pass plays.
Look at how they have devalued the RB position in the NFL.

Why don't we just make tackling illegal while we are at it? Mel Kiper should stick to evaluating players. He isn't very good at that either.
