Men's basketball switched to two halves in the 1960's if my memory is correct. I don't remember what the explanation was for the change.

They haven't had the 10-second rule (for crossing midcourt) for all that long! And I know when I was in college in the 80s they didn't have backcourt violations, either.

The women have an officials time out at 5 minutes left in the quarter; the men have one every four minutes. So, there are two more commercial breaks per game in the men’s game so they can chase the dollar dollar bills ya’ll.
