Men's basketball switched to two halves in the 1960's if my memory is correct. I don't remember what the explanation was for the change.

About the same time wimmins played offense on one side of the court and defense on the other…..and in little short skirts.

It has been that way for several years now. The women's game is so different from the 6 on 6 of my high school years.
They haven't had the 10-second rule (for crossing midcourt) for all that long! And I know when I was in college in the 80s they didn't have backcourt violations, either.

The women have an officials time out at 5 minutes left in the quarter; the men have one every four minutes. So, there are two more commercial breaks per game in the men’s game so they can chase the dollar dollar bills ya’ll.
