IF we move to Big 12, what is the effect on recruiting in

May 17, 2012, 3:38 PM

all sports?

I have followed our recruiting closely over the last several years and I have definitely seen a hurdle we have to overcome (and we have been exceptionally productive): “Do you want to play in a basketball conference at noon on Raycom OR be on ESPN on Saturday night and playing in a conference that produces national champions year after year?” I feel this is the game chicken’s (or Alabama’s, Auburn’s, and Georgia’s) major chip when recruiting “head to head” with us and has helped them when some important recruiting battles (it sure isn’t their academics) over the last few years.

The question is will a change of venue to the Big 12 give us equal billing on this one aspect? Secondly, I also wonder will the Big 12 be a recruiting positive not only in football, but in basketball and baseball as well. Thirdly, can a “change” possibly lead to a series of immediate commitments by some current high profile recruiting targets? Your thoughts.

being in the ACC sure hasn't helped basketball recruiting..

so I doubt a move to Big XII will hurt

We lose kids every year to SEC schools that say they want

to play in a FB conference. You see this a ton with kids that commit to UGA and UF over us. If we moved to the Big12, Im not sure SCar would get another top-10 kid again in our state. We're overcoming the ACC hurdle now, imagine what we could pull in with the Big12 branded on us.

I'm not sure we would always out recruit UCS but

I'd agree our conference affiliation would help our recruiting if there was any change at all. I wouldn't mind having some of those grain fed country boys that Texas would mismanage either.

I think a switch to the Big 12 would be a big boost to recruiting. The revenue and football-first orientation of the Big 12 would put Clemson on an equal footing when going against SEC programs like SC, GA, and FL.

If the North Carolina schools stay in the ACC sinking ship that would open up the state to Clemson to come in and take many of the 4 and 5-star recruits away from UNC and NC St. You just know Dabo could sell them on the extra money for facilities and bigger conference games.

I'm not sure about the impact on basketball recruiting. At least the players who are considering Clemson will know that none of the games in the Big 12 will be fixed by the refs like they are when playing at UNC and Duke. I think Clemson could win a few more games playing in the Big 12, so that might help.
