I wonder how much of BVs

Struggles at OU are due to the helmet communication coming in. He always called his D at the last moment and between offenses able to go faster. I know the D has it as well but it’s hard for one guy to communicate everyone’s assignments that fast, especially when it used to be an army of billboard holders. Hate to see it for him though, one of my favorites to wear the paw

Well, it’s probably a few things but two big ones IMO. 1) he is the HC. He doesn’t have as much time to devote to the defense as he did when he was DC. 2) I think he misses Wes. Not taking anything away from BV but those two are a dangerous combination. Wes’ smarts with BVs intensity and experience.

Yup, from what I’ve read Wes was BV’s eyes up in the box and would help to make last second adjustments.

It will definitely hurt allot of d coordinators moving forward. Big change.
Note it is not the first time BV got 34 scored on him.

The helmet comms cutting off with 15 seconds on the play clock kill the last second adjustments.

His struggles at OU are almost entirely offensively related. OU's defense is not the problem.

That and the other reasons y'all listed could make some difference, but to be honest, I just think it has more to do with what his skillset is. He's an excellent defensive coordinator, but does that make one a great head coach? Not necessarily. To his credit, in the years since he's taken over at OU, the defense has improved significantly. I don't think it's as great as his Clemson defenses were, but it's good, and certainly better than what they had before under Lincoln Riley, whose defenses were always atrocious.
But here's the flipside: The offense, which was actually pretty good when he got there, has gotten progressively worse. Oklahoma finally got a defense, but now they've lost their offense. I think Brent Venables and Lincoln Riley are like opposites who find themselves having the same problem: One is great at defense but terrible at offense, the other is great at offense but terrible at defense. I think this goes to show that some coaches will make great coordinators, but not great head coaches. The head coach needs to be able to oversee everything, not just focus on his particular skillset.
I'd love to be proven wrong, and I wish BV nothing but the best, but I really think it's that simple. I think Brent and Lincoln would be the best DC and OC in the country, but I just don't believe they'll ever be successful as head coaches. As great as they are on one side of the ball, they're equally poor on the other side. That seems to be the everlasting "curse" for these types of coaches.

I am prepared to get jumped all over for even suggesting this possibility but is it possible that BV was stealing signals before the helmet communications and that now he does not have that edge ??

His defense is decent. His problem is he doesn’t have a qb and his top 4 receivers are out.

This is not the first year that his defense has not lived up to his reputation.

Defense is not the problem at Oklahoma. The oline is putrid and there isn't any time to allow a play to develop. The defense is gassed by halftime.
