Hunting WMA land?

Jul 27, 2016, 2:41 PM

I'm thinking of hunting on WMA land in South Carolina this year. I'm looking at the Draper Tract near York. Does anyone have any experience hunting this area or any other WMA land in SC? Is it over hunted and dangerous? I'd mostly hunt dove and deer BTW. TIA

I quit hunting WMA land about 25 years ago.

Actually hearing a bullet sizzle as it cuts through the air will do that to a man.

Since I couldn't really tell where the shot came from

I sprayed the woods in every direction with a backpack full of 30 round magazines. I had to dig a large pit to bury all the bodies, and there might have been some innocents among them, but I have to feel like I got my guy. You know....fishing with dynamite, if you will.

is a right nice tract. Has an excellent dove field, and even has some coveys of wild quail. Plenty of deer as well. If you look at the WMA maps on SCDNR's webpage, you will see that there are several areas in York County (especially if you're willing to chase deer with the stick and string), so don't feel confined to any particular one spot. The fun is in exploring the land.

As for general public land hunting advice- use common sense and be safe. Park in an area where it's obvious to others that you're hunting there and they see your car before they park and walk into the block you're in. If you park in a large parking area with a large block of woods behind it, and you hunt right by the main walkway in and very close to your vehicle, be prepared to have other people walk past. In fact, just prepare yourself for the inevitable fact that you WILL see other hunters and a couple of the less courteous or intelligent ones WILL walk right to and by you, whether on accident or on purpose, regardless of where you hunt (even deep in the woods). Just chalk those couple of hunts each year that get ruined up to the fact that you are joining a hunt club with hundreds of thousands of acres of land for $35 a year. Plus, I've had guys walk by under my climbing stand, watched deer slip around them in the woods avoiding them, and then have the deer get pushed right underneath me for the kill. Sometimes stirring up the woods isn't the worst thing that can happen.

Good luck!
