I probably averaged once every two weeks for four years. I have often thought of writing a book about my thumbing back and forth from Clemson to my home town (about a hundred miles away) for those four years. I encountered some interesting people and some scary rides!!!

Going thru Greenville we sometimes would give a ride to Bob Jones students. They knew that Clemson was a very wicked place and after a few minutes would always get their “good book” out and let us have it. It was not unusual for them to be let out miles from where they were going.

I remember one popular story about a cadet giving a Bob Jones student a ride. When the cadet started to smoke the BJ student(no pun intended) said, "If God had intended for you to smoke he would have given you a smoke stack". The Clemson student pulled over and said, "If God had inteded for you to ride he wuld have given you wheels, get out".

Rock Hill with friends.
Did this until my senior year, when I finally bought a car. Only had one minor incident, when I decided to leave late one afternoon, caught a ride quickly to the Blacksburg exit on I-85, then waited until dark before a young fellow stopped.
He was drinking Buds, having knocked off seven or eight and offered a ride to my folks' home. Said, "Help yourself to some Buds, man," which I did. By the time we arrived, I had had about four, him about the same, and he had to drive back to York. Oddly enough, he never swerved, blinked an eye, nor slurred a word, refused money and couldn't have been more than 18 or 19...a steady beer warrior! lol

from 1965 through1967.Fortunately had a car my last 2 years. Many trips home in North Carolina. Once thumbed to Greenville, NC on Friday arriving about midnight. And back on Sunday, about 13 hours worth of thumbing. Not much studying that weekend.

My experiences were at the Univ. of Florida before WW2. Every corner at 9th. Street and University Avenue was reserved for students seeking rides going North, South, East or West.
While i was stationed at Camp Crowder, MO during WW2, several of us thumbed our way to Fayetteville. AR. About half of our trip to Fayetteville was spent on the back of a truck which had been hauling wheat to a huge storage facility near Neosho, MO. There was still some wheat in the truck and as we sped along, the wheat was flying all around and when that part of our trip had ended, we were covered with wheat and other trash that had been in the floorboard of the truck. Not only were we dirty, something in all that trash made us itch.

Count me in. Since we had Saturday morning classes during my time(1946-50), the biggest line was on Saturday mornings. Regarding the common practice of Clemson Cadets hitchhiking in those days,I think I have told the story about going home one weekend to the farm on the river near the Duke Power Plant. Late on Sunday afternoon my Dad drove me over to the highway just outside of Seneca and dropped me off to catch a ride the rest of the way back to campus. Being in uniform naturally increased the prospects of getting a quick ride. Just a few minutes after getting on the side of the road two big busses came barreling toward me. The first bus came to a screeching stop and the door flew open and a gruff voice yelled out, "Get on the bus, boy". It was Coach Frank Howard. The football team was returning from a game with Auburn the day before.Just one of many interesting encounters I've had with Coach through the years.Always have a warm spot in my hearth when thinking of him.

I started the last Rat Year, 1969, and had to hitch hike on occasion to Cottageville. I once caught rides and made the US-15 turn off of I-26 in about three hours. It took me three hours to hitch hike to Walterboro, approx. 30 miles. Called my parents to give me a ride home for the last 12 miles. 15 was one of the main north south routes from the North to Fla. and the shoulders were narrow.

The campus thinned out considerably on friday afternoons except for the northerners and that was a major takeoff point.

In those days, Clemson was known as a suitcase school. That certainly isn’t the case today. Amazing what a few students wearing short skirts can do to a guys needs to travel! My guess is there was probably 100 co eds at Clemson when I graduated in 1964.
