How long is DJ's leash this season?

I think it will be a little longer than it should be based on Dabo's history of being fiercely loyal to returners.
I hope DJ has a Heisman-worthy season, but I just don't see it happening.

About half the length of a $5 footlong if I had to guess. CDS is loyal but he also knows that back-to-back seasons of offensive ineptitude is going to start having a profound impact on the whole system and if TL 2.0 is in the wings waiting for his opportunity, I don't see him waiting too long if things start to go south.

Forget Heisman worthy. IMO, the leash should stop after the 3rd 3 and out or the first pick six. I said it last year the loss to UGA did not hurt in the grand scheme of things but the loss to State was the first nail of two that did Clemson in. Both of them were conference losses. Ga. Tech would be not only a conference loss, but a loss to an unranked opponent and would be an early indication that there might not be a CFP berth this year. If there ever was a "must win" game ,game 1 is it.

David Hood noted that Klubnik has been accurate on all his throws and showing good ability on throws requiring touch. I think Dabo has mentioned this as well. Don’t be surprised if Cade gets a chance to show his ability to handle game speed early in the Furman and LaTech games. If DJ is missing the layup passes and the offense is struggling, then I expect to see Cade more involved during the Wake game and NCSt might be his first start.

Getting upset over the use of a phrase that has been used for decades to describe the leeway QBs are given is definitely being a Karen.

He’s not a dog, Dabo will just use him in different ways

Dabo might promote him to 1st string Clipboard holder or sign lifter to help with plays going in if Cade turns out to be the 1st string Ball tosser!
Everyone will be 1st string something because the culture looks for gifted winners who develop, unless you end up in the caddy shack!

I don't think that's the question we should be asking.

The question we should be asking is, if DJ does get benched, does he pull a "Kelly Bryant", quit on his team mid-season, and transfer?

with our defense and running backs, DJ does NOT need to have a heisman season for us to be successful. He has to be a whole lot better than last year though.

This team can go undefeated

That’s definitely going to affect how patient coaches are with dj. Kinda like the 2018 team. That team was ready to win it all so dabo was willing to roll the dice and risk losing his proven starter. If cade is really the better option to win games, he’ll win the job

He will start until he plays his way out of the position. I’m be positive and thinking he plays well and we get to let Cade play the second halves of blowout after blowout . But if he struggles then it will be Cade to the rescue.

What i gotta keep in mind is Klubnik is a true Freshman
Aug 9, 2022, 12:03 PM

And freshman can be made or broken in those moments. Bad showings early in a career can sometimes backfire and that player is always pressing from that moment on.
We've had some ready-made guys in the recent past that were just not made to sit on the sideline. And they proved it when they got in the game. WE've also had situations where the guy they were playing 2nd string to were just not anywhere in the same ball park talent wise. So it was almost a no-brainer.
We have two subsets for DJU. We've got first game against ND where he looked like the next heisman QB. and Then we had all year last year where he looked so inept it was baffling. who shows up this yr is hard to know. But Yo-Yo Qbing does not sound like a winning combination. Hopefully this thing gets figured out early. And we're not all arguing about who should be playing every week. If thats the case we're going to drop some games.

My guess is Cade plays in the second half of each of our first three games. Whether he's coming in for mop up duty in a blowout or coming in as a lifeline to save the game is what will determine who starts moving forward.
I hope DJ greatly improves, but either way our schedule sets us up nicely to spend some time figuring it out in weeks 1-3.

Obviously the leash will be very short...

especially after the first 3 (very easy) games.
Just like in 2018, I think Dabo knows we can't reach the CFP with DJ. It's just a matter of time before Cade becomes the starter. We have to hope he's a quick learner and can start by game 4.
The real question is will DJ enter the transfer portal WHEN Cade is named the starter.
Again, just like in 2018, Dabo can't afford to waste a championship caliber defense. Even in the GaTech game, if DJ isn't moving the offense well, I believe Cade could play in the first half.

I think it depends... If the running game is working and its incompletions, probably 4 games. If the running game is struggling and its INTs, it will happen pretty quick. Sounds like he has put in a lot of work though. We could see 2020 DJ and in that case we will be in great shape.
