73 - Antwuan Wyatt Recorded 73 Receptions for Clemson

Clemson WR/RB Antwuan Wyatt was a go-to playmaker for the Tigers. He looked the part of a rising superstar. Some regrettable decisions, however, altered his trajectory significantly.
While at Clemson:
According to Sports-Reference.com, Wyatt registered the following statistics at Clemson:
Antwuan Wyatt (1993-1995): - 73 Receptions for 951 Yards (13.0 Average) - 6 Receiving Touchdowns - 81 Carries for 300 Yards (3.7 Average) - 1 Rushing Touchdown
https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/antwuan-wyatt-1.html
According to GoUpstate.com:
Wyatt emerged as the Tigers' primary big-play receiver in 1995, catching 42 passes for 662 yards and five touchdowns. He also was nationally ranked in kick returns, leading the Tigers at 25.0 yards on kickoffs (12th) and at 12.0 yards per punt (15th).
https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/1996/06/27/arrests-continued-from-page-d1/29585602007/
The Daytona Beach News-Journal adds:
Joining Clemson in 1993, Wyatt rushed for 256 yards as a sophomore. He moved to wide receiver and caught a team-high 45 passes as a junior.
https://www.news-journalonline.com/story/sports/high-school/football/2018/10/02/volusiaflagler-gridiron-greats-tiger-pop-and-godfather-lead-nos-11-15/9713715007/ https://www.news-journalonline.com/gcdn/authoring/2018/10/02/NDNJ/ghows-LK-7741c697-4b36-6e46-e053-0100007f6b39-dc7bd260.jpeg?width=300&height=403&fit=crop&format=pjpg&auto=webp
Things were going great for Wyatt. According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal:
"He probably would've been drafted in the second round, or third round at the latest," said former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Ray Rhodes in 1997.”
https://www.news-journalonline.com/story/news/2010/08/20/ex-local-stars-lend-hand/30569117007/
He had everything lined up perfectly in front of him. Until…
“Then, in the summer before his senior season, Wyatt and Clemson teammate Anthony Downs were arrested and charged with intent to distribute marijuana. The Associated Press reported Downs was caught with 9 ounces of marijuana divided into 36 bags and that in the arrest warrant, Wyatt said the drugs belonged to him. … Wyatt was kicked off the Clemson football team and, one year later, would serve a 90-day stint in a South Carolina correctional facility.”
https://www.news-journalonline.com/story/news/2010/08/20/ex-local-stars-lend-hand/30569117007/
After Clemson:
After his dismissal from Clemson, Wyatt enrolled at Bethune Cookman. His family connection likely helped him to get this second chance at Bethune. According to the Tampa Bay Times:
“B-CC defensive coordinator Alvin Wyatt _ Antwuan's father _ did not overreact the night he heard of the incident. He insisted on getting the entire story.
"When I heard the news, my immediate concern was to get my son out of there and to be there for him," Alvin said. "I wasn't there, so I wanted to know everything that went down. He needed compassion, and we were going to provide it."
Thrown from the graces of a Division I football program - he had led the Tigers with 42 catches for 662 yards - Antwuan found the ultimate sanctuary. He went home.
"This was really his only choice," Alvin said. "Our priority was to get him home and among the people who cared about him. I knew that this was totally out of character for my son, and I also know that sometimes people make bad decisions but we have to learn from them and move on.”
https://www.tampabay.com/archive/1996/11/20/ex-tiger-wyatt-finds-haven-with-wildcats/
Just another example as to why it is so important for us to be there for our loved ones when they need us the most. Thank goodness Wyatt had a dad who cared enough to be there at his biggest time of need.
After Bethune Cookman, Wyatt did not receive the draft selection he had previously been projected to receive. But, he did get drafted. The Philadelphia Eagles selected Antwuan Wyatt with the 190th pick of the 1997 NFL Draft. He played with the Eagles that one season. From 1999-2000, Wyatt played with Arena League teams: Orlando Predators and Carolina Cobras.

According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, however, Wyatt was not the same player after undergoing his ordeal:
“He wasn't the Wyatt of old.
"When I did come back, I wasn't the same player. I wasn't at all. I couldn't do a lot of things that I could do before," Wyatt said. "What really made it tough was there were guys that I played with that were still out there living the dream, so it was real hard for me to watch football for six or seven years."
https://www.news-journalonline.com/story/news/2010/08/20/ex-local-stars-lend-hand/30569117007/
After his playing days ended, Wyatt went into coaching. As a high school coach, Wyatt uses his story to help the next generation make better decisions.
"We talk to everybody about those types of decisions. I use my life as an example for kids coming up," said Antwuan Wyatt, now 35 and an assistant coach at Calvary with Troutman. "Regardless of what I do, I put myself in a situation where I shouldn't have been in. At the time you're with your friends. I lost focus of what I worked so hard to achieve."
https://www.news-journalonline.com/story/news/2010/08/20/ex-local-stars-lend-hand/30569117007/
He later moved into other career options. This Daytona Beach News-Journal article is from 2018:
WHERE HE IS NOW: Wyatt said he coached in the prep ranks for 10 years. He currently lives in Fort Lauderdale, is the chief illustrator for V. Michaels Graphics and co-owns the high school football website, Florida Gridiron Preps.

Such a great story CBProf®!
So sad what happened with his football career, but it is refreshing to see Antwuan using that negative in his life to teach and inspire others!

73 - BT Potter Kicked 73 Clemson Field Goals

BT Potter (2018-2022) enjoyed tremendous success at Clemson. So much so that Clemson fans might have gotten a bit spoiled by the kicking success during Potter’s time in God’s Country. Before he left, Potter had made more field goals AND scored more points than any other Clemson kicker in history.
It was not exactly a perfect start for Potter at Clemson. According to Clemson Sports Talk, Dabo used some tough love with Potter after a lackluster start:
“Head coach Dabo Swinney became the internet’s hottest topic during Clemson’s 45-14 victory over Florida State for ripping into Potter on the sidelines following a missed 24-yard field goal attempt.
“He’s 55 percent,” Swinney said following the game on Oct. 12, 2019. “And he’s way better than that. He’s just got to get the focus that he needs. We’ve got to give somebody else a chance.”
That’s just what Dabo did, benching Potter for backup kicker Steven Sawicki following the miss. But in classic Swinney fashion, he made sure to sing Potter’s praises just as loudly, assuring to the public that it was only a matter of time before the sophomore placekicker returned to proper form.”
https://clemsonsportstalk.com/s/6003/clemsons-bt-potter-flipped-the-switch-after-rough-start-to-career
Return to “proper form” is exactly what Potter did. According to Wikipedia, Potter set several Clemson records:
During his time at Clemson, he set multiple records including, scoring in the most consecutive games in Clemson history, being 54 games, the longest made field goal in ACC Championship game history, becoming the first kicker in ACC history to put have four different 100-points seasons, the most field goals made in Clemson history, the most extra points made in Clemson history, and the most points in Clemson history.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B._T._Potter
ClemsonTigers.com provides a more complete bio:
Completed his five-year Clemson career from 2018-22 as one of the most prolific kickers in Clemson, ACC and NCAA history … finished career 73-of-97 on field goals (75.3 percent) and 234-of-235 on PATs (99.6 percent) … tied James Skalski, Will Spiers and Will Swinney’s Clemson record for career games played (69) and matched Spiers and Swinney for the most consecutive games played (69) … concluded Clemson tenure holding school career records for field goals (73), PATs (234), points by a placekicker (453), consecutive PATs made (the first 122 and last 112 of his career on either side of his lone miss), starts by a placekicker (54), yards on field goals (2,716), field goals of 40-plus yards (34) and field goals of 50-plus yards (nine) … kicked off 449 times for 28,662 yards with 344 career touchbacks … though the NCAA does not formally track a career record for touchbacks, his 344 career touchbacks are the most of any player on accessible record … became the first player in ACC history to record four different seasons with at least 100 points … set the CFP National Championship Game record for longest field goal, converting on a 52-yarder against LSU … scored in every game since earning the starting placekicking job prior to the 2019 season … three-time All-ACC Academic Team selection.
https://clemsontigers.com/sports/football/roster/b-t-potter/
Those stats and accolades speak for themselves!!

After Clemson:
After Clemson, BT Potter signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was released before the regular season began.

As good as Potter was, I never felt comfortable knowing he would make the field goal. Obed, Iggy, Catman, I just knew they would make it, but never felt that way about Potter.

North Carolina Highway 73 is a 118.5 mile-long mostly rural two-lane state highway that runs from the west end at NC 27 near Lincolnton to the east end at US 15/US 501 near Pinehurst, going through Albemarle and Concord. George C. Marshall was from Pinehurst. And of course Pinehurst was the site of last weekends U.S. Open, where Skeeta® Pig® shot a 76er® in the final round.

East of Albemarle, North Carolina, NC 73 runs along the southwest edge of the Uwharrie National Forest, the smallest of the four national forests in North Carolina (Croatan, Nantahala, and Pisgah are the other three) at 51,850 acres, mostly in Montgomery County. All four forests are managed from Asheville, but Uwharrie has a district office in Troy. The forest contains 5,160-acre Birkhead Mountains Wilderness area within its borders with the goal to protect and preseve its natural resources. The forest gets its name from the Uwharrie Mountains where it sits. The western border of the forest is defined by the Yadkin River which becomes the Pee Dee River below Lake Tillery. The northern border is the northernmost range of the Uwharries and the eastern border is Troy and a couple of other small towns.

I used to work at Albemarle. Corporation, in Orangeburg, that is. The name has some nebulous ties to Albemarle, North Carolina, via Albemarle Paper Company.

I had an aunt who lived briefly in Lincolnton when I was very, very young. I only remember one visit there. I do know the small house had asbestos siding..... times have really changed.

shingle siding on it. To get it painted, we had to first have those shingles treated with a special binding sealer, so that no fibers would become airborne. It was a VERY common building material of that time, (house belonged to my great Uncle, and was built in 1948.) The Googly says they were used from the 1920s all the way up to the time they were finally banned in 1989.
