South Carolina Highway 70 is a 29.99 mile-long state highway that runs from the west end at US 278/SC 64 in Barnwell to the east end at US 301/US 601 near Cordova and Orangeburg, passing through Denmark. James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, was from Barnwell.

Between Barnwell and Blackville, South Carolina, just off SC 3 is Barnwell State Park, the next to last of the 16 CCC built state parks in South Carolina I haven't discussed. It is a 307-acre park between Barnwell and Blackville that opened in 1937 with many of the original buildings still in use. The park offers camping with 25 campsites and 5 park cabins, picnicking with 4 picnic shelters and a playground, hiking, and fishing from the pier or in boats without motors that can be rented. There are 3 small park lakes within the park with crappie, bream, bass, and catfish. A community building is available for reunions, weddings, and meetings. The 1.5-mile Dogwood Nature Trail circles the park showing all the amenities as well as yellow jessamine, wild orchids, hollies, and poplars. The connected Fern Hill Trail enters a forested area.

One SC CCC built park left. Which one is it?

Barnwell State Park is a hidden gem! Really cool State Park. BigAl31®, I’m not 100% sure, but I don’t think that you have mentioned Givhans Ferry State Park yet. I think that is the last CCC built State Park that you haven’t mentioned.

70 - The Tiger has been part of Clemson Football for 70 Seasons

If you are like me, you cannot imagine a Clemson football game without the Tiger, but the Tiger has only walked among us for 70 football seasons. According to CLemosnTigers.com:

“Since 1954, a Clemson student has adorned the mascot suit to entertain the Clemson faithful. Joined in 1993 by The Tiger Cub, these furry creatures can be seen imitating game officials (which is now against the rules), signing autographs, getting their picture taken with dignitaries (President Reagan, President Bush, Olympic athletes, among others), shooting the cannon, or doing “Pushups” each time Clemson scores.”

https://clemsontigers.com/the-tiger-and-tiger-club-mascot-tradition/

Generous Donors:

According to the Smithsonian, a tiger in the wild will not normally live even close to this long:

“The life span of tigers in the wild is usually between 10 and 15 years. In human care, or on rare occasions in the wild, a tiger can live up to 20 years. However, approximately half of all wild tiger cubs do not survive past the first two years of life.”

https://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/tiger#:~:text=The%20life%20span%20of%20tigers,first%20two%20years%20of%20life.

Fortunately, the Clemson Tiger should be with us in perpetuity thanks to an ongoing endowment from generous donors:

“The “Eye of the Tiger” will always shine bright for the Clemson mascot due to an endowment set-up by Stuart McWhorter (’88-89) and his father Clayton in 1995.

Here are just a few of the great experiences by the Clemson mascots: One of McWhorter’s funniest moments was in Columbia in 1989 when he grabbed a tuba from a member of Tiger Band during halftime of the USC game. He ran on the field and created general havoc until being chased away by an offended Carolina band member.”

https://clemsontigers.com/the-tiger-and-tiger-club-mascot-tradition/

Pushups:

According to Wikipedia, former Tiger Zach Mills started the tradition of the Tiger doing pushups after each Clemson score:

“In 1978, mascot Zach Mills began the tradition of doing a number of push-ups after every score equal to the number of points Clemson had in the game. Mills performed 287 push-ups in that game.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tiger_(mascot)#:~:text=In%201978%2C%20mascot%20Zach%20Mills,Clemson%20had%20in%20the%20game.

Since then, there have been quite a few pushups!

All Time Pushups Record:

In a Game:
465 by Ricky Capps against Wake Forest in 1981

In a Season:
1,549 by Jon Potter in 2000

In a Career:
2,216 by Mike Bays 1994-1997

https://clemsontigers.com/the-tiger-and-tiger-club-mascot-tradition/

Select comments from former Tiger students:

“We all know what it’s about to bring smiles to fans and especially to the children. We become representatives of not only the athletic department, but the school as well. You’re not representing yourself, but you’re representing Clemson and the unique things that make the school so special.”

https://clemsontigers.com/the-tiger-mascot-turns-60/

Where is the strangest place you have gone as the mascot?
As the Tiger, we do tons of community events, whether that be weddings, birthdays, retirement parties. I’ve worked new hire events, job application events.

https://gardenandgun.com/articles/meet-the-tiger-clemsons-mascot/

What was a normal day like playing the Clemson Tiger and did you do anything specific to get into character?

“Being the Tiger is one of the most fun things you could ever do, especially for football games. The craziest thing is that the personality change happens as soon as the head comes on. The walk, energy level and swagger changes, and there’s nothing that I could do to stop it.

The cool thing is that the Tiger’s character is the big man on campus. He’s everyone’s friend. He’s the ladies’ man and he’s the best at everything he does.

Being the Tiger on game day is like being a celebrity. Everyone wants to take pictures, get autographs and have you hold their infant children for no reason at all.”

https://greenvillejournal.com/sports/day-in-the-life-former-clemson-mascot-tyler-murray/

Honoring the Tiger:

As part of the 2014 Homecoming celebration, Clemson honored the Tiger turning 60. According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“The Clemson Mascot turns 60 in 2014. Since 1954, a student has dressed up as a Tiger entertaining fans, spreading good cheer, and creating smiles and laughter to the Tiger faithful young and old.

This Homecoming weekend, former Tigers are having a reunion to celebrate 60 years of the mascot. Gabby Hayes was the first Tiger in 1954 and former Tigers from each of the previous six decades will be on hand during homecoming weekend exchanging stories, showing photographs, and reliving their experiences as the Clemson Tiger.”

https://clemsontigers.com/the-tiger-mascot-turns-60/

Not sure if there are plans to celebrate the Tiger this season.

70 - DB Andy Headen Could Throw a Football 70 Yards

When top recruit Andy Headen arrived at Clemson, if you had told Clemson fans that Headen would go on to be a superstar for the Tigers, they likely would have believed you.

However, if you had told Clemson fans that Headen would have been a superstar defensive back, they might have thought that you had lost your mind. According to GoUpstate.com:

“In the spring of 1980, Clemson opened a competition and appeared to have its quarterback.

It was not Jordan.

Andy Headen entered Clemson as one of the top recruits in the country. He was built like a defensive end at 6-5 and 230 pounds, ran like a tailback and could throw a football 70 yards.”

https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/2011/11/02/jordan-a-first-among-many-firsts-for-clemson-in-1981/29878737007/

Scott Rhymer’s Tiger Pregame Show provides the following video breakdown of Headen’s career at Clemson:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SN0VvxFhJNM

After Clemson:

The NY Giants selected Andy Headen with the 205th Pick (8th Round) of the 1982 NFL Draft. He played six NFL seasons with the Giants. According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, Headen registered the following NFL statistics as a LB (the source did not include his tackles stats):

Andy Headen (1983-1988):
- 6 Interceptions Returned for 37 Yards
- 2 Fumble Recoveries

In 1987, Headen won a Super Bowl ring with the Giants.

I was not able to find what Andy Headen is doing professionally these days. If anyone knows, please do share any insights. But I was able to find that Headen has been active in the Russell Murphy Football Camp for youth in Asheboro, NC (from June 2023):

“Headen has participated with the Coach Russell Murphy Camp since its inception several years ago. He has contributed his lengthy NFL experience to youth participating in the camps.

This year, Headen will be honored by selecting two participants who stand out at the camp. His selections will be based on good character, team spirit, team player and fun for the sport. Important goals of the Murphy Camp are to encourage the kids to have fun and make new friends while learning fundamental football skills.”
