Thanks to the encouragement of a childhood friend in Nigeria, Clemson K Donald Amechi Igwebuike (1981-1984) came to Clemson to play soccer. At the encouragement of that same friend, he then tried a sport he had never played (he later admitted that he thought football was rugby). After graduating, Igwebuike then took that old friend’s NFL job from him.
Crazy how things work out sometimes!
Before Clemson:
According to Sports Illustrated:
“The story starts in Enugu, Nigeria, where young Donald Igwebuike, a speedy soccer player with an irresistible surname—it translates into “unity is strength” in the local tongue of Ibo—traveled around Africa with his elite junior team. Igwebuike, who eventually made Nigeria’s national team, had designs of a professional career, maybe in Europe. But his childhood friend, Obed Ariri, had attended Clemson to play soccer and encouraged the coach to recruit Igwebuike.
At Clemson, Ariri played soccer but also became the kicker on the football team. In the spring of 1981, Ariri was training for the NFL draft and asked Igwebuike to serve as his workout partner. Naturally, Igwebuike tried a few kicks of his own, and #### if the ball didn’t sail through the uprights.
With Ariri off to the NFL, Clemson had a vacancy at kicker. Ariri told Coach Ford about his buddy, another Nigerian ringer. Ford encouraged Igwebuike to join the team. A rising sophomore, Igwebuike agreed on the condition that he could continue playing soccer. Ford agreed. (Igwebuike took a football scholarship so the soccer team could have the extra slot.) Igwebuike won the starting job, and learned as he went, calibrating power and control. By January of his first season—having, throughout the season, familiarized himself with at least some of football’s rules—he kicked three field goals in the Orange Bowl as Clemson won the national championship.
He was thousands of miles from home, in the belly of South Carolina, playing a sport that two years prior he scarcely knew existed (“I thought it was rugby.”) ... and he could scarcely have been happier.”

“AP Third-Team All-American who booted the longest field goal in the ACC each of his last three seasons … led the nation and ACC in field-goal percentage with a 94.1 mark as a senior … came to Clemson to play soccer and played in two NCAA tournaments (1980,81) … tied for 13th in the nation as a senior in kick-scoring (8.1) … 43-of-43 on PATs in his career and made 32-of-43 field goals … only Tiger to boot at least one 50-yard field goal in four straight seasons … had five career field goals of 50 or more yards to set a Clemson record later broken by B.T. Potter”

“Named third-team All-American by the Associated Press after leading the nation in field goal percentage at 94.1 percent. Was a perfect 43-of-43 on extra points for his career and the only Clemson kicker to make a 50+ yard field in each of his four seasons. Also starred on the Clemson soccer team.”

After Clemson:
Igwebuike’s childhood friend, Tampa Bay Kicker Obed Ariri, helped him prepare for the 1985 NFL Draft. According to Sports Illustrated:
“Returning the favor, Obed Ariri came back to Clemson’s campus to help Igwebuike prepare for the draft. To his slight disappointment, Igwebuike slipped to the 10th round, where he was selected by Tampa Bay. “You must mean Green Bay,” Igwebuike said upon hearing the news. “It’s gonna be cold up there.”
“No,” coaches assured him. “Not Green Bay. Tampa Bay.”
Igwebuike was confused. His mentor and friend Ariri was trying out for the Buccaneers. How could he be heading there, too? “Well,” he was told, “I guess you’re gonna have to beat out your friend for the job.”
It made for a sensational coincidence, two converted soccer players, boyhood friends from Nigeria, now dueling to become a starting NFL kicker. It also gave new dimension to the concept of awkward. “It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever experienced,” says Igwebuike. “Before camp, I just told him, ‘Obed, do the best you can. I’ll do the best I can. Let’s leave it to the coach to decide, and not let it affect our friendship.’”

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Donald Igwebuike with the 260th Pick (10th Round) of the 1984 NFL Draft. According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, he kicked for the Buccaneers for five seasons (1985-1989) and then he kicked for the Minnesota Vikings for one season (1990). He registered the following NFL statistics:

North Carolina Highway 43 is a 119.6-mile-long state highway that runs from the north end at NC 58 near Warrenton to the south end at US 17/US 70 near New Bern, going through Rocky Mount and Greenville. Ashley Sheppard is from Greenville, North Carolina.
 
New Bern, North Carolina is at the northern end of the 159,885-acre Croatan National Forest, one of the four national forests in North Carolina which also includes Uwharrie, Pisgah, and Nantahala. All four are managed from Ashville, but Croatan has a local ranger district office in New Bern. Croatan is bordered on all four sides by water - the Trent River, the Neuse River, the White Oak River, and the Bogue Sound. Croatan is noted for pine forests, salt estuaries, bogs and swamps. All the water provides recreational opportunities like canoeing and fishing and a variety of wildlife including deer, black bears, turkeys, ospreys, and alligators. Notable trails include the 21-mile Neusiok Trail through swamps and pine forests and the 1.4-mile Cedar Point Tideland Trail along a salt marsh and the White Oak River.
DST and family will have fun in the area if they ever get up there and quit stalling!

I have a lot of good memories of riding the Cedar Island ferry to Ocracoke Island on our family's many Outer Banks vacations. We would spend some time on Ocracoke before we departed on the Ocracoke to Hatteras ferry to our house rental at Buxton Beach. I miss those days when the entire family was still with us.
