30 - Harry Olszewski Started 30 Clemson Games at OL

20

Aug 1, 2024, 12:02 AM

Clemson OL Harry Olszewski (1965-1967) was one of Clemson's greatest OL. Sports Illustrated described his gaudy collegiate career – except SI left out an important statistic (His One Touchdown Run):

“A two-time All-ACC performer at guard, he was the only unanimous choice on the 1967 team. First-team consensus All-American as a senior, Olszewski started thirty consecutive games and help lead the Tigers to the ACC title in all three of his seasons.”

https://www.si.com/college/clemson/football/clemson-tigers-football-offensive-linemen-top-10

While at Clemson:

Olszewski was nothing short of excellent for Clemson. According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“Olszewski had a noted football career. He was a first-team All-American in 1967 according to the Football Writers Association, the American Football Coaches Association, United Press International and the Walter Camp Foundation. He also was named second-team All-American by the Association Press and Sporting News.

Olszewski started all 30 games of his Clemson career at offensive guard and the Tigers won the ACC Championship all three seasons (1965-66-67). He received many honors during his collegiate career. He was the recipient of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy for the state of South Carolina and for the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1967. He was an All-ACC selection in 1966-67.”

https://clemsontigers.com/clemson-vault-harry-olszewski-tiger-all-american/#:~:text=The%20native%20of%20Baltimore%2C%20MD,honors%20during%20his%20collegiate%20career.

However, Sports-Reference.com includes one rushing attempt for Olszewski – and it was went for a touchdown:

Harry Olszewski (1965-1967):
- 1 Carry for 12 Yards (12.0 Average)
- 1 Rushing Touchdown

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/harry-olszewski-1.html

He scored that one rushing touchdown against the Gaemchickens. As told by ClemsonTigers.com:

“A Clemson win in this game would mean the second consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Championship for the Tigers. The Tigers had a 21-10 lead in the fourth quarter and were driving deep in South Carolina territory. On a first down play on the Gamecock 12-yard line, Tiger quarterback Jimmy Addison was set to take the snap from center and flip it back to tailback Buddy Gore. Instead, the ball went straight up in the air, right through Addison’s hands. Without breaking a stride, guard Harry Olszewski who was pulling on the play from the right, grabbed the ball in mid air and rushed 12 yards for a touchdown. With the extra point, the Tigers took a commanding 28-10 lead. Clemson would score another touchdown and would win the game 35-10. To illustrate how unusual this play was, a Clemson offensive lineman has scored a touchdown just once since Olszewski’s touchdown on November 26, 1966.”

https://clemsontigers.com/clemson-vault-harry-olszewski-tiger-all-american/#:~:text=The%20native%20of%20Baltimore%2C%20MD,honors%20during%20his%20collegiate%20career.

After Clemson:

The Cleveland Browns selected Harry Olszewski with the 64th Pick (3rd Round) of the 1968 NFL Draft. Following his draft selection, he played in the Canadian Football League instead. ClemsonTigers.com gives brief highlights of his career after Clemson:

“… played for Montreal Alouettes in 1969, 70
… Clemson Hall of Fame inductee in 1980
… South Carolina Hall of Fame in 1990
… named to Clemson’s Centennial team in 1996
… passed away in the spring of 1998
… Clemson’s No. 17 gridder of all-time by a panel of historians in 1999”

30 - Nick Eason Recorded 30 Tackles for Loss for Clemson

19

Aug 1, 2024, 12:06 AM

Credit Nick Eason, He seems willing to do the things he is asking his Clemson players to do. As ESPN noted in April 2023:

“Nick Eason was lacing up a pair of cleats he'd borrowed from Clemson's equipment manager a few minutes before 5 a.m. when Ruke Orhorhoro first spotted his coach. It's not that it was a shock to see Eason there. Clemson's defensive tackles coach had been promising to run through the team's offseason mat drills for a while, but Orhorhoro had always been skeptical. Eason is 42, 12 years removed from his last NFL game, and until recently, he'd been pushing 400 pounds.

"I was confused," Orhorhoro said. "I was like, 'What is this cat doing?' Coaches don't do mat drills. That just doesn't happen."

Mat drills are a staple of Clemson's offseason conditioning, a gauntlet of high intensity, progressive workouts lasting about five minutes each -- rope drills, agility drills, bear crawls, flips, tumbling, sled work, footwork drills. It's as much a mental challenge as a physical one, something Orhorhoro paradoxically says, "has nothing to do with football but also everything to do with football."

As other players arrived, Eason's presence was met with a mix of curiosity and disbelief.
"They were taking side bets on how long I'd last," said Eason, who'll lead one of Clemson's units in its intrasquad spring game on Saturday.

But Eason had no intention of quitting. The way he saw it, there were three ways this ended: He passed out, he died or he finished.”

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/36177697/clemson-nick-eason-finding-balance-life-weight-loss

As a player at Clemson:

From ClemsonTigers.com (written in 2022):

“Years ago, the ACC honored six student-athletes at each school every year with the ACC Top Six Award. The student-athletes selected were honored for their work in community service activities that were organized by the athletic department.

In each of the first five years of the award, defensive lineman Nick Eason, now Clemson’s defensive run game coordinator and defensive tackles coach, was named to the list of ACC Top Six Award winners. He would be the only five-time selection for the honor, not only at Clemson but at any ACC school.”

https://clemsontigers.com/nick-eason-2022-progam-story/

Obviously, a Clemson man leads the way for such an award!

In addition to the five-time honor mentioned, Eason also registered the following accolades at Clemson:

“Was a four-year letterman at Clemson from 1999-2002, playing 47 games with 35 starts and recording 15 sacks and 30 tackles for loss.

Was a team captain, All-ACC selection and Strength & Conditioning All-American at Clemson. He was a two-time Dedication Award winner as awarded by the Clemson strength & conditioning staff.

Selected to the AFCA Good Works Team in 2000 and was the first five-time Clemson recipient of the ACC Top Six award, which was presented annually to the conference’s top student-athletes in terms of community involvement.

Became the first Clemson football player to graduate with two years of eligibility remaining after earning a degree in sociology in August 2001. He later added a master’s degree in human resource development in 2008.”

https://clemsontigers.com/coaches/nick-eason/

If I am reading these accolades correctly:
- First player to graduate with two years of eligibility remaining!
- And won humanitarian awards!
- And team captain!
- And, All-ACC
- And, Strength & Conditioning All-American

Very impressive!! Definitely a true Clemson man!

After Clemson - In the NFL:

The Denver Broncos selected Nick Eason with the 114th Pick (4th Round) in the 2003 NFL Draft. Eason was injured in 2003. He then played for the Cleveland Browns from 2004-2006. He played for the Pittsburgh Steelers between 2007-2010. He played his final two NFL seasons with the Arizona Cardinals from 2011-2012. According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, Nick Eason registered the following NFL statistics:

Nick Eason (Browns, Steelers, Cardinals):
- 132 Tackles (87 Solo, 45 Assisted)
- 9 Tackles for loss

https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/E/EasoNi20.htm

ClemsonTigers.com adds the following insights about Nick Eason:

• Played 117 NFL games over 10 seasons from 2003-12 with the Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals.
• Finished his playing career with the Cardinals, where he spent two seasons from 2011-12, appearing in 32 games and registering two sacks.
• Spent four seasons (2007-10) with the Steelers and helped them to two Super Bowl appearances, including a victory in Super Bowl XLIII in the 2008 season.

https://clemsontigers.com/coaches/nick-eason/

After the NFL - Coaching career:

Wikipedia highlights Eason’s coaching career as follows:

Cleveland Browns
In 2013, Eason began his coaching career with the Cleveland Browns as their assistant defensive line coach under head coach Rob Chudzinski.

Tennessee Titans
In 2014, Eason was hired by the Tennessee Titans as their defensive line coach under head Ken Whisenhunt. In 2016, he was retained under the Titans new head coach Mike Mularkey.

Cincinnati Bengals
On February 26, 2019 Eason was hired by the Cincinnati Bengals as their defensive line coach under head coach Zac Taylor. Eason missed the team's weeks 12 and 13 games in 2020 against the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins due to COVID-19 pandemic protocols.

Auburn University
On January 27, 2021, Eason joined Auburn University as their defensive line coach under head coach Bryan Harsin, replacing Tracy Rocker.

Clemson University
On January 7, 2022, Eason was hired by his alma mater, Clemson University, as their defensive tackles coach and run game coordinator under head coach Dabo Swinney

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Eason#:~:text=Eason%20played%20college%20football%20at%20Clemson.,153%20tackles%20and%2015%20sacks.

In his return to Clemson, Eason has already been recognized for doing a great job for his alma mater. That title of “defensive tackles coach and run game coordinator” title has recently received an upgrade. As our own David Hood wrote on Tigernet in January 2024:

“Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney held a team meeting Friday afternoon, and there were a few items of note to come out of the meeting. The biggest is that defensive tackles coach Nick Eason earned a promotion and was named the Tigers’ associate head coach.”

https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-football/news/nick-eason-earns-promotion-swinney-adding-nolan-turner-to-staff-43593

A true gem for sure! We are extremely glad to have you Coach Eason!!

South Carolina Highway 30, known as James Island Expressway or Connector, is a 3.1-mile-long state highway that runs from the south end at SC 171 on James Island to the north end at US 17 in Charleston. SC 30 crosses the Ashley River on the Robert B. Scarborough Bridge.

James Island, South Carolina, is a town of about 12,000 in Charleston County on James Island. James Island itself has a lot of history. Half of the island is in the Charleston city limits but separated from downtown Charleston by the Ashley River. It is separated from the mainland by Wappoo Creek and from Johns Island by the Stono River. It is inland of Folly Beach and Morris Island. Fort Sumter is on an island on the eastern tip of James Island in the Charleston Harbor. It is the site of the first battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Fort Sumter, on April 12th and 13th of 1861, when the Union forces were attacked by Confederate forces at nearby Fort Johnson, leaving Fort Sumter in ruins and starting the Civil War. Today, Fort Sumter is a national historical park open to the public since 1948.
