My guess is that not many of us current TNetters can remember the 1896 season very well. So we have to rely on the always reliable Internets for info on this (and many other) important Clemson football season.
Overview:
The 1896 football season was Clemson’s first. The team went 2-1. The Glory that is Clemson Football began in a campus barracks in September. According to Wikipedia:
Walter Riggs, often regarded as the "father of Clemson football," brought the sport to Clemson from the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama (now Auburn University). The team's first game, played on Halloween 1896, resulted in a 2–1 record for the inaugural season. Riggs influenced the choice of the team mascot and colors.

According to ClemsonTigers.com:
Sept. 30, 1896 – A small crowd gathered in one of the barracks rooms and discussed the advisability of organizing a football association and to devise some means of getting a coach. The organization, known as the Clemson College Football Association, was perfected and the following officers elected: President Frank Tompkins, Secretary & Treasurer Charlie Gentry, Manager T.R. Vogel, Temporary Captain Reuben Hamilton. A committee of three was appointed to consult Prof. Riggs as to management of a football team and to ask his aid as coach.
Oct. 5, 1896 – Practice began on campus on a 50’ x 200’ field in front of the college.

The 1896 Clemson Tigers football team represented Clemson Agricultural College—now known as Clemson University–as an independent during the 1896 college football season. Professor Walter Riggs brought the game to Clemson from his alma mater, Auburn, where he was a member of Auburn's first football team. The Tigers completed their first season with a record of 2–1, with wins over upstate neighboring colleges Furman and Wofford, and a loss in the first installment of the rivalry with South Carolina. All games were played in the opposing school's home city. The rivalry matchup with South Carolina was held on Thursday morning at the South Carolina state fair, a tradition that would endure until 1960. Riggs served as the team's coach while R. G. Hamilton was the first captain.

In April Clemson and Furman played the first “intercollegiate athletic contest at Clemson.” According to ClemsonTigers.com:
“Clemson played Furman in a baseball game in front of what was then called the ‘Main Building,’ which is now Tillman Hall. … With the playing of this baseball game, the Clemson athletic program was born. Very few details of this game exist; however, it is known that Clemson lost the game 20-13. The field in front of the “Main Building” served as home of Clemson’s early football, baseball, track and even basketball teams.”
