Head Coach John Heisman:
Overview:
According to Wikipedia:
“Under third year head coach John Heisman, the Tigers posted a 6–1 record, including an undefeated Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association record, and thus a conference championship. The lone loss was to rival South Carolina, in a controversial game ending in riots and banning the contest until 1909.
…
Heisman was paid $815.11 to coach the football team.
The team's captain was Hope Sadler. This was the first season with both Sadler and Carl Sitton at ends. One writer recalls, "Sitton and Hope Sadler were the finest ends that Clemson ever had perhaps.”

“Oct. 30, 1902 – Col. Charles S. Roller Jr., who was football coach of Furman, was the only referee for the Clemson-South Carolina game. Bronco Armstrong, a famous Yale player and official, was to be the umpire, but was in a railroad wreck on the way to Clemson and it was impossible for him to get to the game in time. Not a single penalty was called in the game. A riot between Tiger and Gamecock fans broke out the night after the game. Officials at both colleges called off the football series between the two schools. Clemson and South Carolina did not meet again in football until 1909.
Nov. 27, 1902 – Clemson played in the snow for the first time in a game against Tennessee. The Tigers won the game 11-0 and claimed the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association crown, their second league title in three years.”

Also of Note:
In 1902 Coach Heisman totally outsmarted Ga Tech Nation (The same Ga Tech that would later hire him). According to ClemsonTigers.com:
“In 1902, John Heisman played the trick of all tricks on Georgia Tech and their followers.
“We had already won a couple of games, and word drifted to Clemson that Georgia Tech would spare nothing to beat us,” said Heisman. “When the train with the Clemson team and baggage arrived in Atlanta the day before the game, the Tech supporters made it a point to entertain our players royally.” Heisman told the Clemson players arriving in downtown Atlanta on Friday night to enjoy themselves and live it up and pretend as though they were the Clemson Varsity Team.
“The Tech supporters marveled at the ease with which they were able to get our players to sneak out that night and participate in the wild parties around town. There was quite a lot of eating and drinking and the more the Clemson men indulged in such [a] pastime the more were the Tech men willing to back with money their belief that they would win the next day.”
Word got back to the Georgia Tech players that the Clemson players were living it up in the big city of Atlanta. There would be no way the Tigers would be ready to play. They knew they would beat Clemson now.
The Heisman ploy worked. Georgia Tech thought they had the game won. The Yellow Jackets must have thought, the only thing they had to do was show up. They must have let their guard down. After the game everyone was in shock. Clemson was easy victors in a 44-5 contest.
How could this happen? How could the Tigers stay out and carouse around town all night and be ready to play the next day? The Tech players and supporters and wondered and marveled at the hardiness of the Clemson men after a night of revelry. How did they do it? This was unreal! They later discovered that Coach Heisman had sent a bunch of bohunks (today known as redshirts), reserves and scrub players to Atlanta with the team’s equipment and kept the varsity and the starters at Lula, Ga., a small town some few miles northeast of Atlanta, the night before the game. The real Clemson varsity team got a good night’s sleep before the game and were ready to play the next day.

Results:
As stated above, the 1902 “riots” in Columbia led to the game being cancelled until 1909. For context, Clemson had beaten the Gamechickens four straight times by a combined score of 129-6. The chickens had not even scored in the last three contests. When they managed an upset win over Clemson, they acted the same then as they do now when they pull a rare upset. According to WYFF4.com:
“That year, the game ended in an upset victory for South Carolina. After the game some students paraded around a drawing of a gamecock crowing over a beaten tiger. Clemson students warned Carolina students to not bring the drawing to the parade the following day on Main Street.
UofSC students ignored the warning and carried the drawing in the parade. As Clemson was originally a military school, Clemson's cadet corps was marching in the parade that day. The cadet corps decided to take their swords, march onto campus and seize the drawing.
Newspapers reported that 200 to 300 Clemson students marched on the campus. When Carolina students found out, about 40 Carolina students armed themselves with knives and pistols and hunkered down below the low wall on Sumter Street to defend the campus.
Thanks to the arrival of police and faculty, no shots were fired and no blood was spilled during the "riot."
