Coach Frank Howard accumulates his 100th win!!!!
Clemson faces #1 LSU in the Sugar Bowl. The (Clemson) wear their new “Sugar Blues” uniforms out of concern of black and white television might make the uniforms too difficult for viewers at home.
Overview:
According to Wikipedia: “The 1958 Clemson Tigers football team was an American football team that represented Clemson College in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) during the 1958 college football season. In its 19th season under head coach Frank Howard, the team compiled an 8–3 record (5–1 against conference opponents), won the ACC championship, was ranked No. 12 in the final AP Poll (No. 13 Coaches Poll), and outscored opponents by a total of 169 to 138.”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1958_Clemson_Tigers_football_team
Worthy of Note:
According to Wikipedia:
“Coach Frank Howard's 100th win came September 27 against North Carolina. Clemson also played its first game against a No. 1 ranked team when it played LSU in the 1959 Sugar Bowl.
Center Bill Thomas was the team captain. The team's statistical leaders included quarterback Harvey White with 492 passing yards and 30 points scored (five touchdowns) and fullback Doug Cline with 450 rushing yards.
Three Clemson players were selected as first-team players on the 1958 All-Atlantic Coast Conference football team: Bill Thomas; end Ray Masneri; and tackle Jim Padgett.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1958_Clemson_Tigers_football_team
ClemsonTigers.com adds quite a bit of noteworthy highlights:
“Sept. 20, 1958 – Clemson ran down the hill on a rug for the first time. The rug was officially given to Clemson on this date before the Clemson-Virginia game by W.W. Pate Sr., president of Wunda Weave Company. It measured 104 feet long and was 13 feet wide. Also at this game, Clemson’s first expansion of Memorial Stadium was used for the first time. Memorial Stadium was expanded from 20,000 to 38,000 seats.
Sept. 27, 1958 – Clemson defeated North Carolina 26-21, as Frank Howard picked up his 100th collegiate coaching win. Doug Cline scored on a two-yard run with 2:52 left to give Clemson the win. It was one of four times in 1958 that Clemson scored a touchdown in the last quarter to win the game. Also the scoreboard at the east of the stadium was used for the first time. The scoreboard had an added feature, as the Tiger above the scoreboard still wags his tail after each Clemson touchdown.
Oct. 6, 1958 – Clemson was ranked eighth in the country, the highest ranking in Clemson history, at that time.
Oct. 11, 1958 – Clemson kept its top 10 ranking alive with a 12-7 win at Vanderbilt. Harvey White scored the game winner on a three-yard run with three seconds left to win the game. It is the second-latest, game-winning touchdown in regulation in Tiger history.
Nov. 19, 1958 – Clemson defeated NC State 13-6 and won its second ACC championship in three years.
Nov. 29, 1958 – Clemson accepted a Sugar Bowl bid to face top-ranked LSU.
Dec. 24, 1958 – It was announced that Clemson would take the rug that the Tigers used to run down the Hill prior to home games with them to the Sugar Bowl. The rug weighed 527 pounds.
Dec. 27, 1958 – Clemson announced it would wear navy blue jerseys with wide numerals front and back. Orange helmets with a white stripe from back to front in the center would also be worn to give a contrasting color for the nationwide television coverage of the game.
Jan. 1, 1959 – Top-ranked LSU and future Heisman Trophy winner Billy Cannon beat Clemson 7-0 in the Sugar Bowl. Cannon, a halfback, threw a touchdown pass to give LSU and Paul Dietzel the national championship clinching victory. It was the first time Clemson had ever played the No. 1 team.”
https://clemsontigers.com/clemson-football-historical-timeline/
ClemsonWiki also adds the following:
“September 27: Coach Frank Howard gets his 100th win at Clemson as the Tigers down North Carolina, 26-21. A new scoreboard above the hill is used for the first time, featuring a tiger that wags his tail when Clemson scores. Informal dance held afterwards with music provided by the Gladiolas, a rhythm and blues quartet.”
…
December 24: It is announced that the Clemson rug used for running down the hill will accompany the team to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans - all 527 pounds of it.
December 25: Announcers for the upcoming 25th annual Sugar Bowl Classic are announced - Lindsey Nelson and Red Grange will call the game between number one-ranked Louisiana State University, coached by "Pepsodent Paul" Dietzel, and twelfth-ranked Clemson.”
https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/1958
It is interesting to note that LSU had already accepted the AP National Championship BEFORE the Sugar Bowl. The outcome of the game would not have changed that national title.
Regarding that Sugar Bowl bid: Clemson apparently has a long history of getting under the skin of SMU!
According to GoldenRankings.com:
“LSU fans had hoped to play SMU's exciting Mustangs led by QB Don Meredith, who believed they would get the bid if they beat TCU in their finale, which they did, 20-10. However, Sugar Bowl officials had apparently already made up their minds to invite Clemson for their Silver Anniversary game, an action that drew the wrath of the SMU AD.
…
Overcast skies and some mist early New Year's morning portended an uncomfortable afternoon. But the sun came out an hour before the kickoff and helped the temperature reach a high of 50°. A sellout crowd of 82,000 saw a game much closer than pundits predicted. The slippery grass bothered both teams but especially the Bayou Bengals.”

With the loss to the Gamechickens, Clemson now leads the series 32-21-3.
ClemsonTigers.com summarizes the following about the Sugar Bowl and about the season as a whole:
“Clemson controlled the ball, running 68 plays to just 48 plays for Louisiana State. Clemson’s defense held Cannon to just 51 yards on 13 carries as well.
While Howard’s “taste of sugar” did not include a victory as had been the case in the other four bowls, his team’s fine play provided him with great memories throughout the remainder of his life. It was an outstanding season for Clemson, one that gained respect for Howard and his program nationwide.”
https://clemsontigers.com/clemson-football-game-program-feature-the-1958-team/
Also in 1958:
ClemsonTigers.com recognizes Baseball Head Coach Bill Wilhelm’s strong first season at Clemson:
“March 24, 1958 – Bill Wilhelm coached his first game and defeated Michigan State 7-5 in seven innings at Clemson.
May 19, 1958 – Clemson defeated North Carolina 4-1 at Gastonia, N.C. in a playoff game to determine the ACC Champion. Both teams had 11-3 records after the regular season, forcing the one-game playoff.
…
June 14-16, 1958 – Clemson participated in the College World Series for the first time. The Tigers defeated Arizona 4-1 on June 14 but lost to Holy Cross 17-4 on June 15 and Western Michigan 5-3 on June 16.
1958 – Harold Stowe led the nation in appearances (21), innings pitched (127.0), strikeouts (126) and wins (14).”
