Group Think

Our current coaching construct is concerning. Peak Dabo understood his strengths. After the Napier/ Dabo offensive failure Dabo went out and hired a strong willed coordinator to offset his lack of never having been a coordinator. When the defense tanked Dabo went out and hired Venables and gave him space to turn the defense into a championship caliber unit. Big picture Dabo has always struck me as a manager whose best trait were his ability to put the right people in the right positions to succeed. As our coaching ranks have been poached due to success, Dabo has morphed from management to a more hands on approach. The people he has installed are less experienced and more willing to acquiesce to whatever they are told. One of Dabo's greatest weaknesses is he is not a tactically savy coach, "the x's and O's" if you will. His constant interfernce coupled with being surrounded by coaches unwilling to question his decisions may be the root cause of our lack of production. Without a Venables or Morris on the staff we may be looking at a rough patch for football. Dabos contribution to Clemson cannot be understated, he has made me one proud alumni. However, his successes may have made internal reflection and adapting all the more difficult.

Astutely said..

and your key remark that struck me was that Dabo "was" a fantastic Manager who relied on letting key people he chose carry out his plan..

but now maybe he's become more of a fanatical one-person do-it-all my way or the highway coach

who has chained his legacy to a QB not worthy of that noose!

You forgot to mention…

Scott and Elliott. No experience, inside hires, both played at Clemson, 2 National Championships.

A lot of people who point to our current coordinator’s resumes, or lack there of, don’t seem to have an issue with those hires.

Valid point. I think the talent of TL at quarterback along with Etienne and the power rangers at DL helped to offset that lack of experience though. Additionally, it seems like those hires we're given more leeway and independence...but honestly thats just a hunch. Good point though.

Together they were pretty good, Jeff is a good recruiter and our receivers seemed to run routes, get separation and block better than the current group. Tony's UVA team really regressed from Bronco's team last year and Jeff was a complete disaster at USF - He had an uphill battle but his results were beyond awful. Morris's offensive scheme made us better, it has been watered down every year since he left. I remember the pride we had in running 85-90 plays per game, constant motion and some real innovation.
We're lucky to get 50-60 plays per game now.

We were excellent Elliott’s first solo year as well…

last year was an anomaly for him, statistically speaking. Now we have a new OC with similar results as last season. Makes you wonder if coaching is actually the issue. Maybe it is, maybe it’s not.

Original poster, you about know all about Dabo how? Maybe our competition has improved too. Are you an insider with access to the coaching staff or is this just your opinion???

PS: by they way, why don’t you pay for your membership? It helps with improvements with Tigernet!

Never claimed to be an insider, just posting my opinion. My post even claims that its just a "hunch." However, I have sat through several leadership courses and just relaying some of the things I've learned. I dont claim to know Dabo personally, Im just venting a little as well as providing an outside perspective as a concerned fan and alumni.

Additionally: The points about Elliott/Scott we're well said but I still believe there is an issue with grouo think amongst our coaches. I dont claim to be a football expert or insider, im just a rabid clemson fan. However, if we keep repeating the same process and expecting different results, defending those results, then coaches and their boss need to examine the process and try something different.

Concerning autonomy and not being a “yes man.”

Dabo went to put his 2 cents into a Defensive decision with Coach BV … it was an important 3rd or 4th down when we needed a stop… cannot remember which game .. BV was looking at his play sheet and Dabo was saying something to him. BV looked up and barked at him. Dabo turned around and went the other way.

Not sure how many people saw that but it showed me who the D belonged to.
