Fit or Fat

Old is Old

My heart beat rises quickly these days when I do most things. Unlike most folks, I have tracked mine closely for decades and find this interesting.
My base pulse is similar to age 40 as is my top pulse. The effort required to raise my pulse from 60 to 150 takes almost nothing these days, maybe just grabbing a beer from the fridge.

Boston Marathon was last week. There at age 45 I might do 6:15 pace for 26 miles, and it would stay around 150. Now a 15 minute pace for 3 miles will do that for me.
It is not just about being fit or fat, but getting older. Older makes one less fit, less able to take on the day.
I hate that about me.

I have a small one near my porch chair so I do not have to get up.
I need to cover a lot more than 3 miles by the end of this year to reach my goals.

I’m on a beer hiatus until first week in June. My 5k time plateaued at around 24:00. Been running around four miles a day five days a week since last July. My weight is doing what I wanted. I lost a ton of fat and added back a great deal of muscle. I honestly had to buy all new pants as I went from 34-36 to 29! I’m hoping by not drinking beer on Fridays and Saturdays I can trim that 5k (3.11 miles) down to around 20 mins. I think that’s attainable at 54!

Don't forget interval day at the track! It will get your 5k time down.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but for someone that is in pretty good shape, which it sounds like you are, not drinking won’t be the cheat code you are hoping for athletically. Seems like that’s only for people where the wheels have fallen off when they take a break.

I did dry january that’s turned into a dry 2025 so far, to try and kick some stubborn belly fat and really the only difference is I sleep like a king now, which is super important but not the physical game changer I was aiming for when I started. I started around 15% BF down to about 13.5, but based on all the things I read and saw I was expecting to just transform my workouts and appearance drastically. Nope. I always workout hard, before and now. I’m making the typical progress I should lifting, running, kettlebell work, etc over a 4 month period. It’s given me more discipline and a mental edge, which is awesome but not what I started this thing aiming for. I would say the best thing I’ve done is commit to my creatine intake. Take 15-20 grams a day and commit to it, it will make you mentally sharper, recover quicker and help your all around performance. If you like the beer, keep it, but check out the studies on creatine and specifically the amounts you should take, that 5g recommended does is garbage and outdated.

Old man time is gaining on us. I still do what I used to do around the farm but what used to take a day went to a day and half and now it may be 2 days but I eventually get it done. I just get started, find my rhythm and have at it.

Dang, brother - that's FAST, especially at 45!

I'm 55 and my best pace at a half marathon is around 9:50 or so. I'd like to do a marathon, but honestly, I really don't want to be running for over 4 hours!

At 47 broke the Kiawha half record in SC with 1:17:17.
At 50 reset the NC state record.
Few people with a job or a family can do that due to the training needed.
I had neither.

Stem cell treatment will or could avoid this surgery completely. I was 3 weeks away from hip replacement in 2017 and decided to look into it. This is your own body healing itself. At least take a look- it may not be for you, but it’s well kept from the mainstream by insurance companies and the media.
There are many companies offering this, but QC Kenitics is the one you see advertised on TV recently. This is not who I used so this is in no way a promotion for them.
All the best either way!

Don’t get caught up in what you did or didn’t do on a certain day or two. Find exercises that you enjoy doing and do that as often as possible. Set small goals for your short term and bigger for the long term stay between the upper and lower tolerances of eating and don’t heat yourself when you slip. Just jump back on keep going. do, mainly because I realize I'm not in the shape I was at 30 or 40.

Yet, today (Wednesday,) I am off work and intent first to climb a 12-foot ladder trimming up s holly tree off a porch, then rake up and dispose the cuttings, cut my grass, power wash two yard patios, go buy some plants, and set out landscaping mulch. During all that, more than likely I'll sit a few moments and down a bourbon, and after all that stuff, then have a sammich.

And tommorrow, I'll be right back at work, enjoying every minute of it. I'll be glad I got the yardwork done, knowing the worst parts were lugging that frigging ladder around plus toting plants and mulch uphill to my yard. The best part will be the sunlight most of the day.

That's the type of things I try to fill my mind with, joking to myself that 30 or 40 years ago, I probably could have toted uphill two bags of that mulch at a time...now, it's one...with a little panting! lol

Marathon running can introduce arrhythmias in some people. Your resting heart rate drops low from being very cardio fit, and that can disrupt your atrial beats.

Not saying that's the issue for you...but you might wanna have a cardiologist look into that.

Wren I usually walk a mile or so first and that runs it up to 90...after about 12 trips running up the steps it is in the 140 range, and then the last few I am finally able to do again, nunbers 13 through 20, it gets up to 163. But, it comes back down to 100 in about 2 or 3 minutes when I stop running and just walk again. What gets me is if you miss 4 days, which I try not to do, it is almost like starting over....6:15 for 26 miles is amazing. I only broke 6 minutes for a single mile one time in my life. I was 17 and we had to be timed in the mile for football. If you were a back you had to run under 6:30. We ran in Riddell red bottomed cleats on a dirt track, WITH OUR HELMETS ON.....I ran a 5:42 and absolutely thought I was going to die!!!!
