Devoe starting to move into greatest Clem shooter convo?
Feb 3, 2018, 7:58 PM
|
|
Devoe is putting together quite the season shooting. Unfortunately, he didn't show this type of ability his first 3 years, but the recent tear he's been on might start putting him in the conversation of one of the best Clemson shooters ever. What's strange is modern day Clemson really hasn't had many if any great shooters. We've had a lot of guys that could score or make a three, but really T. Oglesby is only guy in maybe the last 20-30 yrs that you could legitimately say was a "shooter". Even with that being said, he never had a stretch like the one Gabe is currently on. There were a couple of guys in the 90s that had somewhat of a reputation for really being able to shoot it (ie. Bruce Martin), but they never really showcased that ability consistently in games.
What Gabe is currently doing really pretty unheard of in modern day Clemson history (some of that also has to do with fact that Purnell recruited more athletes than shooters during his tenure as head coach).

does the name chris whitney ring a bell? David Young could shoot it. so could micheal "phone home" brown. anthony jenkins could shoot it. marc campbell is in the conversation. but agreed- devoe is on a s good of a run as we've seen in a long time.

Terell and Solomon were much more scorers than shooters

Rivers had the big time reputation out of high school and was known as a good shooteer, but he's never done anything close to what Gabe has done in the last month.

Solomon made 214 3's in 3 years at Clemson, hitting 36.6%. McIntyre made 259 in 4 years for 37.2%. Rivers made 281 in 4 years for 38.5% Devoe, so far at Clemson, has made 181 for 37.6%. This season he is hitting 39.7%.
Rivers hit 39.2% his senior year. McIntyre hit 40.2% his senior year.

KC averaged 14 points a game for 3 years. I wish I could find a 3 game stretch like DeVoe but I cannot find any game logs from when he played. DeVoe averages 12 a game this year. Can't really argue DeVoe is better. These last 3 games he has been amazing tho. Idk if Rivers ever took over like he has been.

What you say is very true. Devoe has always been a good shooter. In high school he was really good. Few big time schools offered him because he was “one dimensional”. I don’t believe NCSU was interested in him and he is David Thompson’s cousin. Since coming to Clemson, with good coaching, Devoe has become a complete player. If you watch the games closely, as I do, you will see Devoe make a lot of big time rebounds. Too me, that is almost as big as the three pointers that he regularly sinks. Good on defense too. I’d like to see him cut down on the turnovers but he plays at a full pace all the time. Glad we have him and hate to lose him after this great season.

Gabe has been a prototypical Clemson hoops recruit

A prolific NC high schooler overlooked by the blue bloods who lands at Clemson and slowly develops over his career into a guy who helps beat the blue bloods as a senior.
We’ve had several of those ... Demontez Stitt and Terrell McIntyre come to mind.

mold, from an athletic standpoint, that the blue-blood schools look for, but I've always thought he had great instincts, and like you said, he really developed. He has good court vision and has a knack for anticipating and being in the right place at the right time.

lots of variables.. how much help did they have being a big one, how many were 3 pointers, etc .. but lot of guys who got reps as "good shooters" were really more "volume" guys. here are some of those guys, followed by their career shooting % van gregg 41.2 bruce martin 39.9, boogie mac 41.5 TO 37.8 roper 37.6 ed scott 38.1 will solomon 39.2 tony stockman 36.2 butch Z 41
contrast THOSE WITH COLON ABRAHAM 53.6 MARC CAMPBELL 48.2 CHRIS DODDS 52.0 FRED GILLIAM 48.1 VINCE HAMILTON 52.4 anthony jenkins 48.8 KC 43.9 chris whitney 42.7 skip 48.9
like i said, tons of variables but most of these guys were mainly jump shooters who didn't take many shots in the paint. and that is total shooting %, 3 pointers not broken out
a media guide is a good thing.

The guy was a phenomenal scorer on some really weak teams.
He led the ACC in scoring (20 ppg) on a team that finished near the bottom of the league.
He was also a defensive liability ... but man the guy could shoot!!

going back before the 3-pt line, you'd have to include Skip Wise as well. Even though, Skip was a gunner and threw up some bad shots, but he could really stroke it from outside. Thing is, it was very much an inside oriented game then and with Zatazelo, and the way outside scoring was viewed and took place was very different than today.

His production went way down in his senior year, however, with the arrival of Skip Wise.

Absolutely recall him! Glad somebody also mentioned Vince Hamilton. Solid all around player with great instincts.
I just am beginning to see long-term growth in Brownell’s program and hope DRad will do something to change the direction of Women’s BB. It is ashame that Coach Smith lost her leading scorer for the year, but with LJC we need to hire a young intelligent coach who understands this is a lengthy process.
Go Tigers!

Skip Wise was a very special player but it ended way to fast. If you had a chance to see him play you probably do not forget his ability. He could have been a something really unique.

find is that he returned to Baltimore after prison, and was working at a community center. Don't know how recent that was however, and would love to have an update. I don't know if he has any idea how revered he is by old Clemson fans. I would also love to see more video of him as well; there's bound to be some available somewhere.

Junior college transfer that only played 2 yrs at Clemson, but was prolific and deadly from 3pt land. Had a nice NBA career as well.
