Dabo portal quote yesterday

7

Jul 26, 2024, 7:25 AM

Saw it going around social media yesterday and people slamming Dabo for saying he's not anti portal but pro guys on the team (paraphrase). While its expected that casuals would just hear that and try to dunk on Dabo, I love that quote especially right before training camp. Dabo is telling his guys that he stood by them and his putting his neck out for his belief in them. Hopefully that helps inspire the team this year.

Eventually, the highest bidder fad will end and kids will play for the coach

who wants them to become a better man. If you’re a HS recruit, and a coach says, “I am not anti-portal, but I’m just loyal to the guys that want Clemson,” how do you NOT want to play for that guy?

This whole fad of the highest bidder model will go away eventually when kids realize coaches aren’t loyal. Clemson led the nation with well over 4k freshman snaps last season. That will pay dividends this season… and the next.

Dabo has used this the last couple of years and has worked nicely if we want to be a 9-10 win team. Problem is if we want to be a top four team I am not sure it will work. For the truly elite guys at QB or LT, the money is too great to pass up. Can we be a top 4 team without those guys? Maybe but will be tough.

I do not for one minute believe that any of the "top" portal guys got in there

without their new destination already firmly in hand ahead of time. It's called tampering, but nobody wants to be the whistleblower, because they want to do it themselves as well.

There is no such thing as tampering.

Jul 26, 2024, 11:31 AM

That is an antique term used by the NCAA as part of their illegal monopoly that controlled player movement.

They lost on that one just like every other recent court decision. Appropriately.

There isn't in college football, but there is in the NFL which is what the poster is referring to (and you know it). Given there is no rule, there is just a person's honor, and there is one major college coach who is demonstrating it!

2025 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That makes no sense whatsoever .

Jul 26, 2024, 3:32 PM

There is no tampering in the NFL. Pro players are bound by their contracts for their duration. After that, they are free agents and can negotiate with any team.

There is no tampering in college, because the NCAA rules against it are illegal under federal law.

Anyone that doesn't have an employment contract for a specified amount of time is fair game to be recruited by a competitor...in business, sports, non profits, education, whatever...

All coaches say the right things. "You'll get a great education here. We'll make you a better man. We'll develop you to your potential." Then someone else adds, "Here is $30,000 to show you how important you are to our program." You think an 18 year old is going to say no to that or that he lacks integrity if he doesn't?

The adults in the room have ruined this. $30,000 looks like a lot of money to an 18 year old, but in the grand scheme of things, it's not. For some, they are getting life-changing money. $30,000 isn't it.

Particularly if the kid flames out and goes into the portal never to return (which happens to a lot of them).

https://www.collegefootballpoll.com/news/transfer-portal--nearly-half-the-players-dont-find-a-new-home/

A college degree is worth almost $1M more in a career than those without (You'd really need a $200k NIL deal to make up for that $1M in future value for the college education.) Dabo can make the point that I'm ensuring you that $1M value of a degree and over the 4 years you are here, you can expect $x in NIL by position/rating at Clemson, and oh by the way, we put 5-10 guys in the league every year.

https://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/research-summaries/education-earnings.html

And its not like our freshman aren't getting NIL as you can see here:

Bryant Wesco, TJ Moore, and Sammy Brown seem to prove this assertion false. Three five star guys that came to Clemson for Clemson, not for money.

The fact that we did not sign a QB last year (after many offers) and our 2025 QB commit is a 3* plus the big OT from Charlotte who loved us but will commit elsewhere points to a different conclusion. As previously stated, we can be a top 15ish program without upfront NIL but can we regain a consistent top 4 status? We will see but I would not bet my house on it.

You can’t have it both ways. Take off the doomsday glasses. We didn’t sign top OL bc we don’t have an OL worth being a part of. That will take time. We didn’t sign a QB because our offense has looked horrible the past three years. Yet, we still sign top defensive recruits because we develop guys for the league, and brought two 5* WRs. Much of Clemson’s decline can be attributed to one whiff in a recruiting cycle during COVID.

Obviously we will miss out on some dudes who only want the money, but that’s not EVERY recruit, as much as people on here like to make it out to be.

If Clemson can compete and win at a high level again, the recruiting will be fine. And it’s been fine—our recruiting ranking has averaged the same as it has for almost a decade. Further, if a recruit “loves Clemson” but chooses elsewhere because of money, they didn’t “love Clemson.”

Of course you'll see some players who will commit to a school independent of NIL. You think that's the norm or likely to lead to sustained, big time on-field success going forward?

I'm not so sure Kirby is saying anything about education. That 47% graduation rate says a lot.

Jul 26, 2024, 4:14 PM [ in reply to Eventually, the highest bidder fad will end and kids will play for the coach ]

In any discussion of NIL, the portal, or expanded rosters

Any man can transfer, take NIL money, or make an expanded roster and still become a better man.

Becoming better is not exclusive to either sports or Clemson.

Re: Dabo portal quote yesterday

Jul 26, 2024, 3:55 PM

I would rather see the Tigers keep recruiting at a high level, help get NIL for the top performers to keep the team together and strongly compete in the CFP every 3 to 4 years as the players mature, than be a location for hired guns that may or may not do any better. Most 3 or 4 year talented recruits have as much experience as a 3 or 4 year transfer. It took 35 years between the 1st and 2nd championships and 2 years for the next and a lot or people were spoiled.

Someone mentioned that 2020 was not a good recruiting year and OL recruiting was lacking to say the least. IMO, this year is going to be a good mix of young talent and experience and a next step up season. Stay healthy and Go Tigers!
