Celebrations after a hit?

Just a general question for everybody. How do you feel about the celebrations that players do after a double or big hit? Specifically when they do the mock swing, pull a bow like DW used to do. Personally I don't like it because it seems very amateurish ( I know they aren't professionals so sit down). I don't think I have seen a team not do it and now I am seeing it in Little League more and more. I just don't think that needs to be a part of the game. It is every similar to me to the stupid stuff Gamecock Gainey did after a K. I don't mind the celebrations after the HRs and to me those make sense. I just think after a hit they should show a little more composure, but I realize as most things it is about bringing attention to yourself. What does everyone else think?

I wish they would save their celebrations until the game is won. Just my opinion...but I'm old.

Totally agree! The game seems cheapened by all those antics. I get it when less classy teams with that type fans do it, but we should act and be better than that.

My guess is there is likely some positive mental aspect to celebrating often that directly correlates to future performance otherwise Bakich would shut it down. I get the “I like it old school” mentality but given how much Bakich has focused on the mental aspect of baseball I don’t think he is the kind of coach that lets his players do superfluous stuff if there is not reason behind it.

I've noticed something new this year too. When they get on first, they do the nc st two finger wave to the dugout. Guess maybe it is old school thinking, but it used to be reserved to a really big play, hit, whatever in games that would win a championship. A really big moment. Now it's evolved to every play, and as mentioned, an insignificant play.
Just like football, that first down pointing is ridiculous. Or even just a tackle. Too much.

Totally agree - These young kids have a some what “all about me “ mentality. Amateurish is correct. Act like you’ve been there , after all you’re doing what you were recruited to do.

by certain people who are actors or show-offs..or unschooled in manners or sportsmanship..
which is condoned by society who are of same ilk.
We have become cannibals of rudeness & non-showmanship & “got ya” mentality.
In fact, we have sunk into a hale-hold of various degrees of meanness in everything we do towards & with each other, whether in sports, politics or normal relations!
Saying, No Respect~

Walking off a regular season baseball game should not spark a conference championship style celebration. And yeah, shooting bows and arrows are swinging swords when you get a double or a homer way over the top. And for Odin’s sake, the Gatorade Bath… just stop That boring and stupid and horrible cliché

In baseball a double can only become meaningless in hindsight. It’s the fundamental difference in baseball and every other sport. The game is never over until the last out. You can pick up meaningless yards, even meaningless touchdowns, in football. But a baseball game isn’t over until 27 outs. If you’re leading every insurance run matters. If you’re trailing, every run matters. To score runs you have to get on base or advance runners.
One of the biggest complaints on this board about Leggett was that his teams played “too tight”. Now, ranked #2 in the country, we’re manufacturing grievances about playing too loose.

Don't really mind the celebrations that much. However I'm bored with the "incomplete wave" particularly after you've been beaten all afternoon. And the first down point. Get over yourself.

It is all sports. The simple things, doing your job at your position, is celebrated. I think it is part of a new culture, somewhat disrespectful in my mind. The old school sportsmanship still exist but it is certainly not the norm or something to write about in the press. It is all about getting noticed and media reactions as much as it is about the game at some points.
I do not like it either, but it is here and will not change anytime soon.

Don’t like it personally but I’m not an 18-22 year old kid. Lot of things that I see with these younger guys don’t appeal to myself.

A lot of posters on here are saying the hit celebration is a me mentality and amateurish. Watch MLB baseball. Almost every team has a celebration after a double. IE: Atlanta's sword slash. Furthermore, its directed at the players own team, who reciprocates the celebration. I'm pretty sure that's a team decision. Hitting a baseball is one of the hardest things to do in sports, so if you want to celebrate when it happens, so be it.

I mean he just won the National Freaking Championship and what does he do? Just causally flips the ball to the referee. Then go celebrate with your teammates on the sideline. In other words, act like you’ve been there before.

That was Barry Sanders calling card. The epitome of class. Precious few have that healthy appreciation for humble living today. I know I’ve dated myself, but once there was a time when parents respected manners and demanded it of their children who then carried that to the next generation. Somewhere the Baby Boomer generation lost their way. The downfall of the family and where we are now is not a coincidence (IMHO).

It all began with the outrageous narcissism in Pro Wrestling years ago and has permeated throughout society. Good manners, sportsmanship and quiet confidence are long gone, having been replaced by egomaniacs like Neon Deion, Lebron and Shannon Sharp who are all promoted as role models by our destructive media. Showboating has gone from being shunned and penalized to being center stage and normal behavior. Sad.

Here’s my $.02 on the subject.
I like with the quirky celebrations after a hit. It’s one of those baseball things. Every team does it, none are the same as the next team. Sort of like the “turnover chain” in football. Heck, I watch almost every Clemson baseball game on tv in my barn, and when we make something happen, I cheer from 1700 miles away. When the announcers on tv say “there’s energy coming from the Clemson dugout”, I like that. My son’s 12U team does the same thing when somebody makes a play and they all get fired up. There’s a difference between a celebration with your team after making a play, and taunting the opposing team. Celebrating with your team is sports, taunting the other team is the opposite of sportsmanship. Did anybody here get upset with Mike Williams when he carried that coot on his back into the end zone, then flexed over him ? Yea, I didn’t either. They’re college athletes playing at the highest level, let them enjoy it.
