By a show of hands, is anyone going to be upset, turn in...

16

Oct 11, 2023, 6:12 AM

their fan card, stop giving to IPTAY or taking in the games, when/should/if Dabo and staff go the Portal route more so than they have?

Other than a modicum of disdain for the thousands of student-athletes shipwrecked there, the perceived or real lack of controls, which led to it, is anyone against the Portal in general? Sure, it's change and a departure from many years of NC2A rule and yes, not all changes are good, but since it is here is anyone opposed to it being used more so than it has been?

Does everyone understand that the Portal has changed significantly since its 2018 inception?

Players were still required to sit a year until 2021.

https://notredame.rivals.com/news/ncaa-officially-passes-rule-granting-immediate-eligibility-to-transfers

The initial Portal in general concerned school release, notification & the christening of the good ship itself, Portal.

So, if any, how many Tiger fans will Clemson be losing over a mo generous use of the Portal? Anyone? Or you peoples cool?

What does the Clemson team roster have, something like 56 four and five star players? The portal isn't going to help much since the talent pool in the portal isn't full of four and five star players. The portal helps teams with average 3 star talent more than anyone. As many have pointed out, there MAY be an opportunity for one or two players that could contribute and prop up a particularly weak position (like kicker), but most of the guys in the portal aren't going to make us a better team and COULD be detrimental if they don't have the right attitude or other problems that caused them to leave their first team.

FSU had a roster full of talent. A couple game changers have made a difference. Same story for stacked teams like Michigan, OhioSt, and Bama. Last year the Virginia center that transferred to Michigan was a significant upgrade. There are two basic uses of the portal. A) Rebuild a roster because of lack of development or poor recruiting (typically needed by a new coaching staff)
B) Add two or three upperclassmen with known skills/talent that is currently a gap on the roster and is aligned with the level of transfers leaving the program. Maintain a healthy high school recruiting strategy for year after year stability.

Option B is where Clemson needs to be.

Not giving up my fan card. Don't see the portal making a huge difference. Dabo gets run through the ringer because he isn't jumping off the cliff like everyone else is. Ask Bama how much the portal has helped them. And all it will take is coaches being fired when they have one great season because the portal worked and the next five attempts don't. People make out like the portal is a sure thing. It can certainly help. But it can not help also. And no kicker couldn't have been helped this year because no one saw Gunn with confidence issues coming out of the first game.

What does that have to do with using the portal with success? Yes, the Tigers hurt themselves, but Coleman is still a strong WR talent that made a game winning play. His contributions at WR have made them a more explosive offense and helped them win games this season. I don’t think that’s even up for debate.

If you say that the Noles supporters had to pay him significant NIL to enroll and join their team, that’s different thing and I won’t argue against that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Coleman made that play over a sophomore with little in-game

Oct 11, 2023, 6:45 PM

experience.

I wouldn't call that "Portal wins big Game over Clemson's big-time player catapulting FSU to Playoff caliber";

No, I'd call it "portal beats backup player in due to injury".

The fact is the we could be beat by anybody at any time due to injury, and that play was hardly a significant recommendation for the Portal.

If you're going to keep beating the drum about something, at least come up with good reasons to do so.

I mean have already lost a huge game that probably put a dagger in our ACC championship hopes because we don't have a kicker. That ship has already sailed.

And that has already put us back from last year, furthering the perception of decline even if it's not entirely accurate (which I believe it is), the damage is done with recruiting.

And that's just ONE position! What more do you need to see?

I don't think I need to rehash the other units that need a boost.

My fan card is here with Dabo, without Dabo, 15-0 or 0-12.

4

Oct 11, 2023, 8:52 AM

the need to editorialize beyond it? There are social reasons for this, but they're a bit coarse, invasive.

Not pointed at you, just in general. People be funny.

Clemson had a kicker that won the competition over at least 3 others starting last season and into the spring. One of the contenders went the way of the dodo soon after and is apparently riding the pine @ UNC?

There was no need for a transfer kicker until no transfer kickers could be taken. Our starter developed the shanks, yips, whatever word you'd like to use when the bright lights shone. It happens.

Dabo did exactly what I expected would happen[wrote about it in early summer?] if it was necessary to increase the competition by turning to the student body, which is a oft occurrence in college football.

Burcholz and Huegel immediately come to mind at Clemson alone.

Enjoy your day, PBT.

Re: Why is it so difficult to just answer the question, w/out...

I appreciate the response. These are much needed breaks from a very exciting lit review.

I mean, when the second string left and was picked up - was there not a single kicker in the portal? You need a solid back-ups at every position, but especially at kicker, right? If you had three and one left, was the third string not worth running out there? If so, why have him on the team?

Gunn could have just as easily gotten hurt and you'd be in the same situation.

I am not being snarky, I promise. I just don't think I have all the information.

I have said repeatedly that roster management has been an issue and this is just one example. It is easy, absolutely not. I think you even pointed out how much tricker it is with the super seniors. God knows, even UGA and Ohio State have holes.

I don't have the all the answers, but I think the portal could have helped at least in some spots. Our WRs and OL need help. Next year, it will be at LB. Heck, I even think that we could use an upgrade at RB but it's hard to tell if that room lacks speed and explosiveness or it's the OL, or play calling/game prep.

I would love to hear your thoughts. In your opinion, could the portal have helped us at all? I have never been the portal is a silver bullet guy. For me, it's about roster management in general.

Dabo is probably up nights trying to figure out how to navigate this bizarre new world of college football while maintaining the programs values. I don't envy him, only judge him. hahaha.

We had kickers still here, there were @ least 4 mentioned...

2

Oct 11, 2023, 10:13 AM

above, so at least 3 remaining with Boyd leaving. Boyd himself was a walk-on that just recently started football, because the VID cancelled the season at IMG I believe? He was in his 2nd year with Clemson football as was Gunn.

We were at 87? scholarships after spring and needed to pare down, portal opened 4/15 - 4/30, which Boyd took and there was no apparent need with 3 and the ability to go to the student body as has been done in the past and done all over college football.

Hausen, #3 in the land, had already committed in late 2022. BTW, Gunn was #3 in the land by 247 as well.

The thing about roster management that is intriguing...

2

Oct 11, 2023, 10:45 AM

is this year we could use a kicker, so it's poor roster management not to have multiple ready to go. Any other year, having multiple kickers ready to go is poor roster management.

This is the luxury of hindsight. Not an attack on PBT, or any others, but it's an impossible situation the coaches are being put in by the fans, the same fans who said nothing about us needing to hit the portal for a kicker in April. In other words, fans expect coaches to be proactive, while they enjoy the luxury of being reactive.

One thing about the kicker....We loved Potter, but you know he basically sucked his first year kicking. He barely hit above 50%. He was also given a full year on kick-offs only before getting the field goal gig.

Gunn redshirted, people have called him a true freshman...

1

Oct 11, 2023, 10:31 AM

which is more of the bafflement here, but it happens.

Gunn was 6 of 6 on TBs, perfect on XPs, if only 1 or 2, but had a full year as the number #3 kicker in the land to hone his craft under BJ, an All-Conference performer that had been through the trials.

We've seen people, not just in sport, going through what Gunn is going through, it's not fun. If I had any feelings, I'd use them in Robert's situation.

rabbit hole thoroughly reamed out, and

1

Oct 12, 2023, 3:32 AM

what do you have? Not a #### thing.

We didn't lose the FSU game because of a kicker missing a FG.

We lost the FSU game because Mafah missed a block, and the consequences were extraordinarily poor. We lost the game because Cade did not yet have the experience to "feel" the backside pressure in time, and the consequences were extraordinarily poor.

So unless people want to get rid of Cade and Mafah, this aspect of the discussion is at best a rabbit hole. A red herring. A non-consequential.

Anyone who misconstrues this is either a poor judge of causality, or simply has an axe to grind for the benefit of their Ego, and nothing more.

The Myth of the CFB Portal is a great example of how people in this country cannot fathom real logic anymore, assuming they ever did, and then spend virtually all of their time trying to enforce their idiocy upon everyone else.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Look at FSU. They recruit well and have similar numbers of high star recruits but they are aggressive with filling gaps through the portal as well, and they have definitely gotten better since they started using it more aggressively.

The key does come down to need. If you lose a lot to the portal then the portal makes sense to replace them, and that is what a lot of teams have done but even Alabama, Michigan and others have selectively improved certain position groups by picking up talent out of the portal.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not sure the defense's case holds water as FSWho...

1

Oct 11, 2023, 11:03 AM

has not recruited particularly well, certainly not for FSWho, is but ~20th since Norvell arrived, but most importantly, has lost 67 to the portal since '21.

2020 22nd
2021 23rd
2022 20th
2023 19th

Other than Wakeylink Beamer's first year, did the Dirtpecks out recruit the Criminoles? It's close.

That 67 lost to the nether is almost a full, 25 man recruiting cylce each year. That's bad form.

It's been survival, and surely needed because of it.

MN appears just another newer coach in dire straights flipping his roster or manning the life boats, whether getting rid of the chaff he inherited and/or the numbers[recruiting issues] he had to fill in any way he could when he first started wrapping his arms around the Tally. Some baptist...

Good on him, it's been a shyatt show since Jimbo, Once a Tiger, alway a Tiger, left town. But really, there's nothing about the FSU program I'd want to emulate even though my sister[no pigs] is an FSWhoer, but more importantly, a die-hard Tiger.

I'll put you down for a no, you'll stick around if Dabo dips in deeper than he has.

more grad transfers from the portal.

These guys have earned their degree so technically they haven’t quit on their old school. (See Sam Hartman) so the narrative, if spun correctly is intact. I also think that players who enter the portal after a coaching change will be fair game in the future.

I don’t see Dabo taking anyone who gets mad over playing time and jumps in the portal aft a year or 2.

Having said all that, to answer your first question, I will not be upset, turn in my fan card, etc etc if and/or when it happens.

As far as your second question, part of me wishes there was a safety net for those that go into the portal and effectively end their shot at a college degree but then another part of me says, decisions have consequences.

It’s time for Dabo Swinney to take advantage of what the portal can offer like everybody else does. We aren’t special. Clemson is totally average on offense and if fans want to see more championships, you have to get help now.

I am ambivalent as long as we are in the playoffs and beat the coots. However, the maturity of our program at this point does not dictate a wholesale use of the portal ala Louisville.

On the other hand, with the clear misses at WR and the future needs at DE, OL, and LB, I think the portal would have been appropriate. Dabo's comment a couple of weeks ago that "Hey, sometimes you are interested but they are not interested in you" tells me we have reached out to guys but have not be successful.

If we are going to play in the portal, we probalby need to adjust our approach and strategy. A difference maker is only going to come here if he has the guarantee to start and get exposure for the next level IMO.

Finally, can we have some posters turn in their man cards? I have a list...

Portal is not the issue

1

Oct 11, 2023, 9:46 AM

First, I don’t think any Clemson fan is going to turn in their IPTAY card over this. The issue for me has never been the transfer portal- it’s the NIL money that is fueling a lot of it. Implement simple controls like every other professional sport, and most of the transfer issues will go away
A salary cap would be the biggest change to implement. Each school has X dollars to use to pay players and it’s the same amount for everybody. A players union is probably inevitable at some point as well. Not sure a draft would work at the college level.
The whole concept of paying 18 year olds for their “Name, Image, or Likeness” is all wrong. It teaches kids the wrong things being important in life. I guess we’ll never go back to the good old days, so let’s just call it what it is and pay the players for playing the game, BUT every team on an even playing field.
Problem solved.

It is now nothing more than college free agency. Whether we like it or not, this is part of the new reality in college football. It does seem like more teams are benefiting from it, than being hurt by it. To me, it is simply another recruiting tool that is available to you if you have the need, and not something to be vilified and avoided in today's game.

I’ll never turn in my fan card. I don’t give a crap if we get players out of the portal or not. Just win. I feel like Clemson football is starting to turn into Clemson basketball, or worse… regressing to the Tommy Bowden years. I.e. Stacked with talent, but can’t get out of your own way.

I don’t like it because it cements the reality that certain college sports are no longer collegiate in nature whatsoever. Sure, athletes have been taking the academic easy road forever, but now there’s a road that’s even less accountable to continuity within a higher education degree track. It’s “I took some PRTM classes to play in college” instead of “I studied to become a professional _____.”

The education side has been made to be utterly meaningless in favor of the semiprofessional farm system for professional sports. I still love sports, etc. but that’s the reality, and the transfer portal is now a BIG straw on the academic camel’s back.

How does being able to choose to go to a different college and earning money on your own value make it not Collegiate sports?

Re: By a show of hands, is anyone going to be upset, turn in...

You’ve answered it. It’s about “money on my own value” distinct from the traditional purposes of attending an institution of higher learning.

There are some voices of wisdom who can caution an athlete that “my own value” completely dies when injury removes them from athletics, but those voices are drowned by the raging mania that is NIL, portal, etc. The “value” they are legally and justifiably maximizing is abruptly time limited, and most college athletes do not become professional athletes. School jumping for fleeting paychecks doth not a stable career path make…

I feel for many of these athletes who are blinded by the glimmer of here and now to the sobering reality of a future of underpreparedness. I commend Dabo and Clemson Athletics for making a big deal out of this reality. It’s healthy and wise.

You are 100% right here and the medical care, clothing, food, travel, etc. that they also get as part of their scholarship. Tuition/R&B alone is worth $100k+ and the future earnings value of said degree is worth $1M vs high school diploma.

That said, if a kid wants to monetize his tiktok/youtube/etc account and jerseys/video games, that is more the spirit of NIL. Giving away trucks and headphones is not, but we are where we are and glad to have Dabo guiding our program through it.

the same before he moved on to the great gig in the sky in 2014. This slide has been a long and winding road, trickle down from an NFL that still refuses to address their 3 year removed from HS rule, which has forced CFB to suffer its throes.

Less than 2% will ever see an NFL field save buying a ticket. It's the 98% that are there for an education and should be the concern, first and always.

The NFL has been addressing the remaining 2% with classes on how not to be stupid and broke after your 3.5 average NFL years. It's pathetic.

If you're going to be a real Clemson Man, there is no sitting on a fence;

there is no being nice to everybody;

there is no skulking the shadows and playing politics, nor abiding by those who do;

there is no taking the time to test the winds of public opinion;

there is no such thing as "gray", there is only known and unknown, and gray emanates not from unknowns but instead only from indecision;

there is no disrespect from disagreeing, there is certainly disrespect in untruth;

there is no disrespect from conviction, there is only disrespect from the lack of it.

These are the some of the things that Clemson Men used to know, and used to live. We were a much different people then;

and to steal a turn from DSP, "there is nothing good that has come of it".

For you heathens to argue about

Most outgoing transfers either go down a school or transfer home. Few actually leave and are impactful elsewhere.

But that's kinda the point. We don't need 20 transfers. We need one or two that at the very least are seeing significant snaps. Who we had going out, few saw good playing time or any at all. They go on to see about the same wherever they land. But you can't look me in the face and tell me there isn't a single kid on this list that would impact the team positively? Not one kid that is better than a HS recruit which statistically half-ish never develop or just are busts all together. not one of these kids would fit into the "Clemson Family" and add talent to the roster? not one? 95% of these kids have nil-basically nothing for NIL anyways.
