Backyard farmer help needed! My maters are already

under attack by squirrels. Last year they decimated the yield after they turned. They’re starting early this year on the green ones. Is the only answer to either shoot the squirrels (not a lot of time for that) OR wrap them in meeting/screen which seems like a pain?

I hate those bushy tailed rats. Netting may entrap song birds.

Put up some bird feeders filled with sunflower seeds. The rats will empty your bird feeders and will probably leave the maters alone. They don't bother mine. They prefer the sunflower seeds on the ground. I have those baffles around my bird feeder posts which keep the squirrels off the feeders but birds throw a lot of seed on the ground. Keeps the squirrels and chipmonks busy.

I have never had problems with squirrels bothering my maters. Birds like to peck on them, but the bird feeders keep them away from the maters.

Good luck.

.22 just behind the eye works ever time. I have never had any luck feeding something to make it go away.

Agreed. Fun target practice too. I’ll pick them and chipmunks off from my 2nd story home office window with a suppressed 10/22 and it’s a ton of fun

Shooting them is the best way, but OP said he didn't have time to do that.

Because I like hot stuff anyway, one time I made a slurry of some ghost peppers I had grown and dumped it on/around some veggies I was growing and tomatoes and it actually seemed to make some difference

I had a big squirrel problem about ten years ago. They did not attack my tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, string beans, eggplant or zucchini. But they loved the broccoli! I tried a mean looking artificial owl. That didn't help so I fired him. I tried wildlife netting
(which is the same as bird netting but was 25% cheaper) but that didn't work. They dug under it or chewed through it. Lived in a neighborhood in the city limits so it was illegal to discharge a firearm. Finally tried a "Haveahart" trap. I caught 31 the 1st growing season, 29 the 2nd season and 30 the 3rd season. In spite of this success, the remaining population still attacked my broccoli so I threw in the towel. Rest of the garden veggies were fine.

I put those seed catchers under my feeders. The ground around the feeders is a lot cleaner and the squirrels are leaving the feeders alone and just sitting up there eating out of the seed catchers which I’m good with. I have found out birds waste a lot of seed.

I gave up on tomatoes. Not sure what I am missing but have had no luck in growing them.

I also bought a couple of these. Neighbors never heat it.
