The refs apparently had their heads stuck too far up their own a$$es to see the QB step out of bounds prior to the hit.

One toe was 1 inch out-of-bounds before contact and you need slo-mo replay to be sure of that. If quarterbacks tuck and run, they should get no different treatment than a RB or WR tiptoeing down the sideline should be. If you don't want to have people get lit up when they barely get out of bounds, make some rule about "giving yourself up to the OB marker", like the slide rule, and make it so that no extra yardage can be gained. QB could have slid there, for that matter, but he tried to get one more yard.

The helmet does clip the facemask, but it was the shoulder to the ribs that did all the damage.
