AITA: boss gifts edition

5

Dec 15, 2023, 2:37 PM

I'm happy to give a gift to my (same level) coworker, or when I was a manager I would give gifts to my employees.

I hate the idea of giving gifts to the boss.
A card, cool, I will sign it.
But why in the hell are we collecting money to buy them a gift card? This seems ridiculous and inappropriate to me.

So, AITA?

And if I am not, how do I tell my coworkers nicely when they email or come collecting?
In the past, I just don't respond. But unfortunately they sometimes sign my name to the card, which makes me feel like an even bigger ####### than just leaving me out of it.

TIA. FYT

What does the boss do out of pocket for you and co-workers?

2

Dec 15, 2023, 2:49 PM

At the bank, my boss would come out of his own pocket for a pretty nice gift card since he wasn't allowed to put me in a better bonus pool than other people at my level. He also pretty well left me alone knowing I was good at my job and didn't need micromanaged. We only had one other person in the department so I'd get them both really small gifts. The other co-worker oftne brought in a LOT of home made treats to give as gifts.

Never after that have we done anything. My first boss at the current company have us a gift card. If any other of his direct reports did stuff, I was never aware. He left shortly there after and current boss does not do such things and I'm good with it.

Boss does not give personal gifts. We usually get a modest bonus but

not a personal out-of-pocket gift. And the Christmas parties stopped a few years ago too.

If I had to guess, boss would prefer to NOT get the gift, I only feel somewhat obligated to help my coworkers.

You are not the A-hole.

The co-workers are taint lickers that need to be stopped.

Just responded to the email with:

Hey,
I don’t think I am going to participate this year.

IMO, we shouldn’t feel obligated to give a gift to the boss – but you should do whatever you want to, including lick that taint, totally cool.

Sorry.

(I left off the taint part).

2025 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

IME, gifts should go down, not up.

And a boss that doesn’t give gifts to direct reports is a real SOB.

There is ZERO chance Greenr would ever consider a gift to my boss

2

Dec 15, 2023, 2:55 PM

unless you mean My Wife, then I give her waayy too much, especially compared to the paltry gifts and ass she tosses my way.

Gifts for bosses at work is a real real real dumb antiquated thing.

ringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Youd give your wife to your boss?

Cat on a tin roof, dogs in a pile,
Nothin' left to do but smile, smile, smile!!!!

So the employees pool money and buy the boss a gift? That is weird.

1

Dec 15, 2023, 2:58 PM

You are NTA but I'm not sure how you can bow out other than saying something vague like "Thanks, but I'm going to participate this year." If they sign your name without talking to you then that's on them, not you. You could also make substantial donations to The Human Fund in boss's name.

Semi-related, I've run into a situation where I bought our secretaries a Christmas gift card. A few weeks later I was informed by my boss that she had also bought the secretaries gift cards and that my contribution would be $X. That was awkward especially because my bosses are suuuuuuuuper stingy on anything like that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, they want to buy them a gift card for a 'nice dinner'. FTS.

1

Dec 15, 2023, 3:03 PM

How about we show up to work and make them money so they can buy their own dinner.

Obligated contributions to gifts are weird, especially at the office.

Yeah, I would be out.***

If she's a hollerer, she'll be a screamer.
If she's a screamer, she'll get you arrested.

I'm with Obed here. Boss gives gifts down, gifts don't go up.

Maybe a card or something, but not a gift.

My boss is the ####### man.

A) he took a chance on me with no sales experience
B) he gives me full autonomy and has my back 9.5 times out of 10
C) most of us make more than him, especially in a down year like this

8 sales bros giving 60-80 bucks to buy my boss some wagyu tomahawks and 2 dope bottles of wine is a no brainer. He's singlehandedly gotten me $40k in commission this year that the company wouldn't have given me.

Ive had bosses where I wouldn't #### on em if they were on fire. I'm fortunate now to have a dude who's easily top 5 guy in the entire industry and giving him a hundredth of a percent of my salary is a no brainer.

2025 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

$80 is a hundredth of a percent of your salary?

Dec 15, 2023, 4:25 PM

You make $800,000 before commission??? Dang bro
