Clemson lost "mile-and-a-half lead" in Zion sweepstakes

Zion Williamson said he was going to shock the world and in a way, he did just that Saturday night when he announced his commitment to the Duke Blue Devils. Williamson's step-father, Lee Anderson, talks Clemson and details the decision Full Story »

We all know Brownell's weakness is recruiting but to hear

Jan 20, 2018, 9:26 PM

Zion's father say we lost a mile and a half lead over the other schools in recent weeks really is disconcerting. Something happened here and I hope our athletic department gets some answers.

Re: We all know Brownell's weakness is recruiting but to hear

Jan 20, 2018, 9:30 PM

Maybe he decided he wanted to play for the title. He would have made us better but not sure he would have been so big a difference we would have won it. I do think Duke could win it all next year and even though I wanted him here at CU I can almost understand what he was thinking.

You have no clue what took place and for all we know

Jan 20, 2018, 9:32 PM [ in reply to We all know Brownell's weakness is recruiting but to hear ]

MR Anderson is doing a CYA so he can live in sparkle city. He is trying to blame
Clemson so he does not catch any grief from local Tiger fans. DO NOT blame our
coach who has our team 16-3 A$$ wipe. If you want to speak ill of Brownell why don't
you go to FGF with other idiots. 1 player does not make a program.

Well, with all the other “recruiting” going on in cbb, I don’t see this as the coaching staff’s failt. This is an 18 yo kid with an enormous decision. He made the decision he felt was right. Best of luck to him

Re: We all know Brownell's weakness is recruiting but to hear

Jan 22, 2018, 9:24 AM

Nice response. His mom and step father have been paid by Spartanburg Day for him to play there. It is pretty well known among high school coaches in SC. I am related to a former Clemson coach and current high school coach in SC. It was commonly known the price tag for Zion was $300,000 and Duke was the only one willing to go there, apparently. In a couple years you will see and be relieved Clemson wouldn't to do that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thank goodness Clemson is the only school in the country

Jan 22, 2018, 11:32 AM

that doesn't cheat! What a relief!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, no, NO! This is all a smoke screen! He knew all along

Jan 20, 2018, 9:28 PM

where he was going. He had it in for Clemson. He was never coming here (except when it was a certainty that he was, per many T-Netters). It was not a tough decision for him. He simply trolled us all the way!

Bwahahahahahahahahaha!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Flip a coin? All tied for 2nd place?

Jan 20, 2018, 9:43 PM

Come on. You cant say that Clemson had this huge lead, and then out of nowhere not just one school, but every school on his list catches us? If we had such a "huge" lead...wouldn't you have signed in the early period? And its impossible to say what Clemson did or did not do...nor what any of the other schools did as well to change these supposed positionings? Nor is it strange that the school considered at the bottom of his fav list by a consensus among the media and experts ended up getting him? Come on. It was purposeful misinformation to drum up some drama, congrats...the state you "love" basically is looking at you as a Benedict Arnold... not for your decision, but how you went about it. I have much more respect for Bryce Johnson who ended up going with UNC after they offered and was honest about it. I guess he just woke up today and realized Duke was Duke and Clemson was not, wish someone could have kept that a secret for a few months longer.

Re: New Story: Clemson lost "mile-and-a-half lead" in Zion sweepstakes

Jan 20, 2018, 9:46 PM

Brownwell is just not a great recruiter. If his stepdads comments are true a great recruiter doesn’t let a mile and half lead disappear to every other team recruiting him(all tied for 2nd).

Hopefully Brownwell can continue to attract high level transfers, a few solid recruits and keep putting solid teams on the court.. This years team has been fun to watch and he has them playing really well!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He could have been immortal

Jan 20, 2018, 9:50 PM

ZW had an opportunity to be idolized by his local community. He could have been remembered. He could have walked around Clemson signing autographs and getting pats on the back well into his golden years.

Instead... he chose to play a year at Duke where he will be a cog in a machine and forgotten by next Summer.

Allen graduates

Carter and Bagley are definite 1 and done
Trent and Duval are better than 50/50 out the door

Robinson, O Connell, Goldwire, and big Croatian dude comes back
Bolden tries to stay healthy and come back or leaves he wants to go closer to home in Texas.

Barrett
Reddish
Zion
Tre Jones at the point
Moses Brown or EJ Montgomery for a big man(where K will concentrate now, Duke needs height)

Oconnell
Robinson
Croatian dude
Goldwire
Bolden
for depth

Could go down as a great team next year

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I guess Zion reads

Tigernet and quickly saw what wonderful and knowledgeable fans we have! If half the experts on tnet want Brownell fired why should he be a part of this zoo? That mile and a half lead could have dissolved in one day of reading about the wonderful support Clemson basketball gets from its rabid fans.

Duke has had several freshman who didn't play much drafted in the first round, so why would he care?

If his measurables don't change, he will be a lottery pick no matter what he does in college.

Sound a bit like Mr. Anderson is talking out of both sides

Jan 21, 2018, 12:03 AM

of his mouth. In one sentence, he's saying Clemson lost a mile and a half lead. Next, he's saying the decision was all Zion's and he had no idea where he was going. I tend to think Zion was going to UNC or Duke all along, he fjust wanted to have us in-state folks think he may stay home.

These one and dones aren't interested in going where they will get great coaching for one year. They just go where they can get some quick notoriety for a year, then move on.

If he is a good as advertised, he would be a lifetime hero in Clemson. At Duke, no one will remember him in five years.

Dude. Relax. A young man chose another school to spend a year or two. If the NBA didn’t have this rule he wouldn’t be considering college anyway. Relax. We missed on a big recruit. Won’t be the first or the last. Be glad that Brownell has our team playing decent lately. Basketball has always been one of our least consistent sports. Just enjoy the ride until baseball and spring football starts up.

He saved brownells job by thinking he may come. Why would he come to clemson? Prob will be in nba next summer. He played us.

Read between the lines...

Jan 22, 2018, 2:01 PM [ in reply to Sound a bit like Mr. Anderson is talking out of both sides ]

Take that statement, put it together with his less than enthusiastic look at the announcement, and basically he is saying he wanted him to go to Clemson but wasn’t going to make an issue out of it. The mile and half statement means Clemson did more than any other school recruiting him.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My opinion: He knew he was going to Duke. It's like Clemson

Re: New Story: Clemson lost "mile-and-a-half lead" in Zion sweepstakes

Jan 21, 2018, 4:28 AM

I'm bummed we missed on him, but the butt hurt on this thread is disappointing. When we snag a football recruit from another school, we laugh at how bitter the fanbases are (heck look at what happened when XT committed to us)...but many here are acting the same as they do. People are talking about how Zion trolled the fanbase, how Duke must have paid, blah blah blah.

Who knows what Zion thought. However I will say those who suggest "he trolled us" are most likely way off. He's a teenager who had a massive amount of pressure placed on him--more than any of us will ever know. This is a guy who's become an internet sensation, who has world-famous rappers following him on Instagram and NBA players showing up to his AAU games to watch the show. I'm sure that won't garner much sympathy since most of the people crying on here are 50+ years old and when they were in high school, people were raving about the new electronic gaming system called Atari. Instead, most will be more than happy to just pile on and then call the generation "weak" while failing to realize they're part of the problem.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Zion was never a Clemson Man

Jan 21, 2018, 5:54 AM

This kid did not shock the world but swallowed the devils rhetoric and will follow a brotherhood of one and done prima donnas that go to the NBA to sit on the bench a few years and are broke by age 30.

Imagine what it would be like if Trevor Lawrence wnt to Duke. Better yet, if everyone said he was going to Duke and then pulled the trigger for us. Similar thing here.

Few programs suddenly start pulling the top players from the big boys like Ole Miss did. Of course, they had something "special" going on down there.

Our team had a good win last night and is 16-3. It would have been exciting to see us climb the proverbial ladder with Zion, but it will also be exciting without him.

Go Tigers!

All this "everyone else was 2nd" crap is just their way of trying not to hurt anyone's feelings, especially Clemson and Scar fans who are his friends. In reality, he's hurting Brownell (and Clemson) by saying that that jerk Martin was able to close a mile and a half gap with that "he did a good job on his presentation" spiel.

Just be transparent and say you wanted to play for an elite basketball school. We can certainly handle hearing that.... it's not new.

Could someone please explain to me how it just happens that the top 3 ranked recruits have the academic skills to get into Duke? Isn't it a prestigious college with high academic standards that's difficult for even the gifted syudents to get in? I know they may not stay long enough to have much of a GPA, but how do they get in to begin with? Are they all that smart?

He never put out a top 5 and he didn’t shoot down the Clemson talk to get more hype for his announcement. That was it plain and simple. Nothing to be mad at him about, he grew up in the social media baby era and Lebron’s decision era. Just move on from the we had a chance at him talk, cause he never indicated Clemson

ZZzzzzzzzzzzz...what a joke, my wife and I looked at each other and were like, Ho-Hum, when he picked Duke. Was excited to follow this kid's career and see what he could do at Clemson as he seemed like a high character kid that wanted to come and make a difference. Now he's just another blue chip 5-star at Duke, along with a bunch of other ones...nothing exciting and nothing worth paying attention to; too bad, he would've and could've gone down in the Clemson record books, now, he's just a number.
