I don't get it.

TikTok doesn't do anything Twitter, Facebook, Apple, Samsung, or Google

doesn't also do. Heck, you could argue Google and Apple especially collect more data. It logs your text messages, monitors your web searches, knows your location, yada yada. ALL of these companies do the same thing. It's only bad because it's a chinese company.

HoR Republicans beat Dems in this race to the bottom

Bingo.
Also, this HoR bill represents one case where Democrats had more smart votes than Republicans. Voting against this bill:
50 Democrats 15 Republicans.
In a race to the bottom, the Republicans won this one.
Thomas Massie (R - Kentucky) is among the few congressional representatives that sometimes reads carefully and thinks things through. Massie warns of how this bill gives the President the power to decide what social media outlet gets to be censored, with that justification for censorship being whatever arbitrary definition that the President decides is a security concern.
(?). Who wants Biden, or Trump, or RFK, Jr, or Big Mike, or Jessie Ventura to, in effect, be given the power to arbitrarily decide what social media company is ‘too dangerous’ to be allowed to have their subscribers post messages / content? What a horrible idea.
(*). For parents who worry that their kids will be unduly influenced by ‘subversive’ social media, I’ve got the solution: Take their smart phones away, and give them burner phones instead. Let them call home if they need help.

China is actively using TikTok to not only gather intel on our fighting force (young people we would need to draft), but also to create divisiveness and anti-Americanism among them.
Now... that doesn't mean I advocate the ban because that's affording quite a bit of power to Congress that our Constitution wouldn't like.

I find X to be far more divisive than TikTok.

I have actually found TikTok works really well at placing you in an algorithm versus places like X where you're fed BS and disinformation and propaganda all day long.
For example, if you scrolled my Twitter feed, you'd think I'm some RWN. If you flip through TikTok you'd see I don't like political garbage, Karen drama, or anything else they COULD feed me. My wife is in the food prone algorithm on TikTok and they give her exactly what she likes.
I'm saying, if you want to really know someone by their social media, you can really get to know them scrolling their TikTok feed over Facebook, X, or others.

And Musk gives off strong Bond villain vibes, but his actions seem more like bumbling self-serving whereas China is using this as a weapon against our Gen Z.

It's pretty easy to see how this could mission creep into wholesale censorship of social media/internet a la China's great firewall.

Wouldn't be the first time the federal government wanted to curb our rights over the fear of a foreign enemy. Shout out to McMurph and all the long lost clowns who cheered the Patriot Act on here 20 years ago!

I’ll readily admit that I was one of those clowns who, albeit with reluctance, went along with the wrongheaded conclusion was a necessary evil.
It wasn’t until ~ 2015 that I finished my evolution to knowing that the Patriot Act was simply evil, as opposed to being a necessary evil.
From the erosion of privacy via the Patriot Act sprung the FBI’s evil coronation with online social networks to censor speech that they deemed as counter to what the FBI and establishment / crony capitalist politicians wanted out in public.
So here we are.

I don’t get it either but I don’t care … I don’t care about China. When Tiktok is banned their place will be taken up by some other internet company … and may that be a USA company.
Stated otherwise, this matter is easy … ban them.

You people that don't care or don't know are simply ignorant. You don't know what you don't know, and couldn't understand it if someone 'splained it to you.
When you are China with 100% control over the population, industry, information flow, food, water, military R&D, blah blah blah (which in itself is out of the realm of understanding if you grew up in the free world) you can get a lot done. You can develop strategies that work over decades and generations instead of days and weeks.
As someone who has [insert chit here that I can't say] I can say with confidence China is very advanced in a lot of different areas you have never considered. And some of the areas are not necessarily high-tech - they are very good at leveraging what they have and making new ways to accomplish their goals.

I wouldn't know but it may have something to do with they can't be controlled and won't censor to the extent Zuckerberg's entities do?
