I bumped my arm on the corner of a drawer. My old 93 year skin is so thin that the bump cut more than an inch wide hole in the arm. Since I am on blood thinners I was bleeding like a stuck pig. My granddaughter drove me to the ER. As we were checking in the police brought in a guy in handcuffs, and took him straight into the bay. I got immediate attention. I was in the triage room and the door to the nurses bay was open. I saw him walking alone around the corner of the nurses station. All of a sudden everyone was running after him, including my nurse. Momentarily she came back and said,"They are wrestling around there, we usually win those".
She then put me on a gurney up against the nurses station. Then six or eight policemen and one female Cop brought him around to put him in a room not 20 feet from me. He didn't want to go in! They threw him and penned him against the nurses station and brought the bed out of the room and strapped him to the bed with about eight straps. then rolled into the room. Quite a show just for the price of an Er copay.
I mentioned to the Doctor who stitched me up about the experience( at another hospital) of our youngest son who was an ER nurse. A patient stabbed him in the groin and severed his femoral artery(I posted about this a couple of years ago). By the way, when he went back to work, they told him it was his choice of where he wanted to work. he said,"How about the OR, they can't fight back in there!".That's where he's working now. The Doctor said she knew about his case and that she had used him in testifying Congress in DC to support laws to strengthen the safety of hospital personnel, especially Emergency Rooms.

Hope you feel better and that sounds like a transport problem. I worked in corrections and we always had two armed officers and they had leg chains also. Then they were chained to bed. You never left them alone either.

When I worked at A.O. I had a drunk in E.R. that wanted to fight everyone. A woman Dr from ATL was the E.R. doctor. She picked up a bag of saline, swung it like a ball bat. Hit him upside the head and nocked him out. Said "leaves no marks. You should keep some in patrol car." I just laughed.

I was so young, and looked even younger, when I entered Clemson in 1950 that they nicknamed me “Kid”. Luckily, even today, everyone says that I don’t look my age. One of my many doctors walked into the examining room recently and said, “Ninety three years old, “No f****ing was way,”.
Several posters have wondered about my handle., so I thought I should clarify it.

A little secret for the younger tigers out there. We may be old in the eyes of others; or even ourselves when we look in the mirror. We always feel like that young man in our minds. Yes, our friends got so old. Somehow, we didn’t. Granted, I’m still a baby, only half a century old. However, I still feel 17. Adjusting to a failing body is the hard part. My mental acuity is stronger than ever.
The only speculation I will give to the young man wearing bracelets is that he felt like a trapped animal. His instincts kicked in and overpowered his logic. I have never felt that way; I hope that I never do.
Tiger kid, keep on keeping on. We’re all standing on your shoulders. Godspeed on your recovery.

They had an inmate grab the deputies gun and run down the hall and he got away. They caught him about an hour later.

That is horrible and a poor job by the officers. Our holsters had a safety catch that made it hard to grab it out of holster and you always position yourself opposite side of the inmate. Anyways thankfully nobody was hurt

And generally speaking, they’re easier patients to take care of then the general population
I learned not to look up someone’s arrest record
It serves no good purpose
So if you give respect, which they don’t get a lot of, they typically respond with appreciation and gratitude in my experience

I know they told us not to, but I looked them up. Treated them equally, but it helped to know what to watch for and when doing cel searches what to go after. Some sick people in this world and pedophiles were the worst. God forgives us all if we ask, but them people have some messed wiring

Agreed. With rare exception, the only time I had to use force was on intoxicated/high people.

in the ICU was in 4 point restraints.
Apparently the night before, the pt took a glass bottle off the iv pole, threw it at the ground, and unbeknown to my coworkers, he had picked up a decent size shard.
As the staff cautiously approached him, he looked at the night RN and said, “im ready to go see Jesus and you’re going with me.” He lunged at Marcus’ head /neck area with the shard, which Marcus blocked with his hand, and then they wrestled the man back to bed and tied him up.
Penalty to the man? Nothing.
The crap we deal with as healthcare workers, verbal abuse, spitting, kicking, hitting, attacking (by families too) would result is arrests in any other arena.
Marcus went to the ER, then came back up and finished his shift.
Its just what we do and how it is… most people never have a clue.

Soywaker it’s good to see a post from you. I agree people are so selfish now and there are so many people with mental health problems that working in a hospital is a dangerous environment. Thank you for what you do.
In May I spent 5 days in the hospital from an infected dog bite and had hand surgery. My nurses worked 12 hour shifts. Those are long days especially working 3 or 4 days back to back. But I received great care from all of the staff.
I have one piece of advice. If you are bitten by a dog / animal even if you know the dog or animal well. Call your Doctor. They may want to start you on antibiotics. If I had taken my own advice it would have saved me several days in the hospital and surgery on my hand.

Prayers for a quick recovery to you tiger kid. Thank you for both stories. One night I went to the ER for a kidney stone. After getting treatment with some strong pain medication I was sort of walking out of the ER when a woman pulled a knife on me and the nurse helping me out. We tried talking to her without success. Out of nowhere a hospital Security Guard took her down with a Ben Boulware sufflex tackle. Or you could compare it to the Waterboy Captain Insano tackle in the Bourbon Bowl. Either way I think she felt like she had been hit by a freight train.
I was glad the Security Guard came out of the darkness to protect and defend, because the woman could easily have cut me up since I was on pain medication. Lol
She wanted some drugs the ER rightly refused to give her.
Glad your Son is in a safer place. The ER is getting a little more dangerous these days.

I was going to poast about my own experiences being handcuffed to a bed, but after reading these responses it just doesn’t seem appropriate.
