I'm not worried about my physical safety, but I'm trying to convince my wife for us to just head north to a State Park in GA or AL and take a week long vacation.
She doesn't want to right now, but she may change her mind. We'll make a decision tomorrow morning.

I use that Better to, Than to, every time we leave the house. Any time you leave your house with how crazy people are these days, you never know what's ahead when we leave the house.
Every time me and the wife, or just me or just the wife leaves the house, I make sure there is a weapon loaded and ready to rock and roll no matter who leaves the house bc you never know when the time will come that you will have to protect yourself, and I would much rather have it close and hope I never need it, than to need it and not have it.
People in this day and time don't have any respect for their fellow man or woman. I tell my wife if her life is being threaten try to move on, but if they try to stop her, do not hesitate to protect herself with as much deadly force as she can with the 8 shots, she has...
I also tell my wife that all the target practice we've done was to save hers or my life if we ever need to.

Ditto (as to wishing you had left) - I thought I had killed my family with Hugo - 28 trees down and my neighbor's 60' live oak right through the left wing of the house. As the winds continued to climb, the power and TV went out, and trees continued to crash all around us (sounded like thunder, but no lightning), I prayed to God to spare my family from my stupidity. I'd sure have rather prayed to God to spare my family from a wasted trip. Summerville, btw - on the Ashley River. R/TLM

Once I decided to stay in South Fla and not leave because I was supposed to take a direct hit. It went north and those people that left were trapped for almost a week trying to return. On the other hand, I was without electricity for almost 2 weeks . Anyway...

She caught whatever it is that I had and isn't feeling well at all. She said she doesn't feel like traveling. She'd rather just stay here and go without power for however long it will be. I'm guessing 4 or 5 days based on prior experience.

If I was an insurance company, I would absolutely leave the state of Florida.
I know a guy that just spent a lot of money in the past eight days repairing a house in Florida after Helene. Now he is in the path of Milton. He only missed I, J, K and L.
This is ridiculous.
People have known about these hurricanes for years. Live there uninsured and fend for yourself or MOVE.
I have a lot of sympathy for the folks in Asheville and places where this is not expected.
I have much less sympathy for someone living on or near the coast in Florida. They have been warned for years.

It's one of those arguments being made for selling insurance nationally instead of not letting it cross state lines. It would make a major difference in the cost of insurance for coastal areas and a minor increase for places elsewhere. Its the idea of focusing the cost on 25 million people or spreading across 200 million people.
It's easy to say move but there are many that are required to live where we do because our jobs are related to proximity to the ocean. You can't be a commerial fisherman in Kansas you know. They locate rocket launch facilities to the coast to mitigate danger to people, etc. Then shipping can't have ports 50 miles inland.
You have a case for folks that live right on the ocean out of choice. Most of those places have to be self-insured nowadays because no insurance company will touch them. My boss' place is on the leeward side of the barrier islands and they want $55k annually to insure his house so he simply does not insure it and assumes the cost on himself.
The ocean has its draw though. 40% of the US population (more than 126 million people) is located within 25 miles of either coast or 10% of it's land mass. So telling people to move elsewhere is like peeing in the ocean to fill it up.

high winds, heavy rain, etc. and started to leave for my house in the N.C. mountains.
However, close friends at the beach evacuated and came to my house here, so I stayed put and came through the storm OK. My hometown of Rock Hill took a major hit from that storm, and I recall telling friends few people would have known where in the heck to ride out that.
My inclination in your case with the size and forecasted strength would be to Hotel Alpha out of Florida completely out of its path or reach, especially after what we have been witnessing with Helene.
Regardless, hope the Mrs. will be feeling better soon, and my best wishes for you both.

I see it as occilating a bit. Right now it looks to have a bead on North Brevard county and Titusville (just north of Cape Canaveral) as the center for crossing to the east coast. Moving south would be better for Tampa though. Bad for me because we live in southern Brevard county. So if it moves substantially south (lets say 50 miles) it could put a real hurt on us here as a category 1 or 2.

We are relieved where I am. We're on the southside of the storm here in Melbourne. Means lower wind and less rain. Good luck to you. I pretty much think we'll only have tropical storm conditions of max 50mph winds, perhaps 4" of rain. Perhaps the side tornado's can be a huge problem, but that is really isolated.
The biggest complicating factor for the east coast of Florida is that we've been getting dumped on with rain for the last 5-6 days. According to the rain gages at my house we've had 7 inches of rain since last Friday. All the ponds and ditches are full so if we do get dumped on the flooding will be pretty bad.
So I hate it for the folks north of us, but at the same time glad that it has shifted north....but you know hurricanes, they can change direction on a dime.
