Complications with conference realignment.

Just thinking out loud here. I know nothing. I have no sources.

Assumptions:
1. Clemson and FSU, and probably others, want out of the ACC and want out ASAP.
2. Clemson and FSU are discussing how to leave with each other, with the B1G and with SEC

Complications:

1. SC would oppose Clemson to SEC
2. Same with Florida and FSU
3. Both schools joining B1G would give B1G teams in the Southeast.
Conclusion: B1G seems most likely place for them to move.

1. SEC does not want B1G to get teams in the southeast.
2. ESPN does not want to lose Clemson and FSU to Fox Network.
Conclusion: SEC would be the most likely landing spot.

1. ESPN is perfectly happy with the ACC contract.
2. ESPN owns 50% of ACCN.
3. ESPN has no reason to do anything to aid FSU or Clemson to leave ACC.
Conclusion: FSU and Clemson are stuck in ACC, at least for the next 10 years.

1. SEC does not want Clemson and FSU to join B1G.
2. B1G does not want Clemson and FSU to join SEC.
Conclusion: Both conferences will work to get both schools to join their conference.

So, a lot of competing, contradictory theories about how this will all end up.

All I know is it's complicated. A lot of people who know more about contracts, money and other things I don't even think of will spend a lot of time, energy and money figuring out what path to take.

I would love to see a list of people agreeing with the current ACC contract. I know about Swafford but who were the AD's and univ Presidents??

Jim Barker signed the GOR and almost immediately retired.***

I’m thinking if the powers that be want either or both schools everyone will get in line and vote for who they are told to vote for. I believe that worked for Texas when A&M did not want them.

Not sure why SC and Fl would not want us. Never really understood that logic. Worse thing that could happen is that they would make more money.

They would lose a little edge in recuiting. We are gone to B1G before 2027.

The SEC is unique in that they move as one brotherhood to do what is best for the conference. Its not individual institutions moving at what is best for them but what is best, overall, for the SEC as a whole. If the SEC office wants FSU and Clemson then you will get a 100% acceptance vote from all the schools. There is no way Florida or South Carolina will come out against you.

Texas and Texas A&M are biter enemies. I have never seen such hatred. I don't think there is more hatred amongst the Arabs and Jews over TU and A&M. Texas A&M would have sold their mother to keep Texas out but look what happened. They voted for Texas and OU to come into the conference. They did this KNOWING they would lose their recruiting edge of being the only SEC school in that area against those two schools. Why? The SEC said they need to come so get on board. It will be the same with either Clemson or FSU. No worries there for you so don't let anyone tell you otherwise. All the SEC fans want both of you over here. Hope it happens.

I hope you're right. I truly believe South Carolina will fight this as hard as they can- more than Florida would oppose FSU, for sure. Clemson in the SEC is their worst nightmare.

The gamecocks want Clemson in their conference because they don’t want to play 8 SEC (soon to be 9) SEC games plus Clemson.

That is 10 games against some very strong teams.

So long as Clemson is an out of conference game they will never play regional teams like UNC, NCST, UVA, FSU, etc again.

And there is no chance of ever playing a home and home against teams like UCLA, Notre Dame, Michigan, or Penn St.

You forgot "We signed a POOR iron clad LONG term deal.

Mar 4, 2023, 11:12 AM

We're stuck 'til '36" as a very real option.

No deal is "iron clad". The length of the contract makes it MORE LIKELY to be challenged, and MORE LIKELY to be defeated. They really don't have to defeat it in court. They can (together) sue the league for mismanagement and force the exit that way.

You can tick Complication # 1 and #2 off the list. Sankey would tell UF and USC to get in line so fast if he really wanted Clemson and FSU in the league same as he did with A&M regarding Texas. Besides they only have one vote each out of 16. Imagine USC or UF asking A&M to vote against their rivals Clemson or FSU. LOL!

Academically it makes the most sense for Clemson to stay in the ACC while adding better academic institutions OR go to the BIG10.

Athletically it makes more sense for Clemson to stay in the ACC while miraculously finding more money OR joining the $EC.

I think that’s going to be the internal battle. I know Dabo has no real say but you better believe the leadership will at least listen to what he has to say. With his preference for student athletes it will be interesting to see what happens.

TA&M couldn’t keep out Texas. SC and Florida won’t be able to keep us out. Its all about money.

Re: Complications with conference realignment.

It doesn’t make sense for the non revenue sports to play conference games in places like Texas and Iowa.

It cost too much money. And in case you haven’t noticed this is all about money.

I predict that there will be a football only conference soon. Teams like Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Northwestern, Duke, etc will be left out.

Clemson will be included.

Hopefully Clemson will remain in a good conference for all the other sports. The ACC would be a great place for that if they could drop Boston College, and a few other far away schools.

Bretfsu, you are spot on fox with your complications. ESPeNis is happy with their contract with the ACC and has no impetus to change it. ESPeNis doesnt want FSU and Clemson (and other SE teams) in the B1G. It all comes down to who wants it more. To me, a B1G conference with additions of Oregon, Washington, Clemson, FSU, Georgia Tech (recruiting), and NC, would be the grand slam of all grand slams. I know teams would be all over the country and travel would suck, but that would be amazing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A lot of stuff that’s to be decided… BUT

1

Mar 4, 2023, 2:38 PM

Clemson and FSt will be on the move soon!

I believe it’ll be to the SEC. I don’t think there’s a chance it’ll end up being with Big 10. The PAC 12 is about to be no more. Oregon and Washington will end up with USC and UCLA.

After Texas A&M was told to stand down by the SEC when Texas was added, the chickens will not be a problem for Clemson. This entire thing boils down to what ESPN and the SEC want.
