You down with OPP?

I know I was.
You can put the blame for the state of our basketball program on the AD and administration for not keeping the guy that had us going to the NCAA tournament and winning 20+ games a year around.
And you can also blame the coots on this board that used to whine that we had "peaked" under Purnell even though he had us playing the best basketball in our program's history.

He had zero NCAA wins here and was a dismal failure after he left here. He's not some genius.

He would have plenty of wins in the NCAA tournament by now if he was still here.

Not really.
Based on the fact that our program went from crap to consistently competitive in a conference filled with powerhouse's it's almost certain we would have won a few tournament games by now.

Based on the fact that he won zero when he was here, you come to the conclusion that he would have won a "few" tourney games by now?! Your logic ain't logical, son. What got us here wouldn't get us there.

Lol that's a ridiculous assumption. His recruiting was abysmal his last 3 years here. That sure didn't hurt his case for bailing.

Actually you can blame OPP for not being able to keep it in his pants.

Clemson pretty much countered when you include the cost of living in Chicago but Mrs Purnell wasn't staying

I've heard this for years, but what is the story?

Never read or heard anything to verify this, just seen it stated on the boards here since he left. Does anyone actually know? Link, source, anything?
I liked the guy here, but i support BB bc he is the guy know. But OPs teams were fun to watch.. and yes, i appreciate and understand the various styles of the game.

I can sort of confirm that's true. My FIL is a BIG donor and in the know - furthermore, we were at dinner with a good friend of his, who is on the Board of Trustees when the topic came up. The trustee (and no, I'm not saying who it is - but I was there and heard him say it) said that it was the wife's decision. She gave OP an ultimatum - leave Clemson or she was out, and how that was what was presented to the University.

Ah, the old Urban Meyer "health reasons" gambit. I suppose on some level it is admirable that these guys choose their marriages over their careers, but I think being a supplicating beta hauled off to exile by a scorned wife dooms both career and marriage in many cases.

today. He ran a one-trick pony show, and when tourney time came around and all the teams are bringing their hyped up games to town, his method was continually exposed.
The best thing Purnell delivered was Demontez Stitt. Stitt's class won 90 games with only 42 losses - 4 straight 20+ win seasons. Dude was a talent machine and winner from the start. He was the guy that made Purnell look like the genius so many of you want to make him out to be.

I know a lot of people thought he had a "gimmick" scheme that wouldn't work on elite teams, but boy could he win games.

stopped being able to get recruits, and he left the program in a shambles. Shows his abilities with his subsequent performance at Depaul.

and he realized it and left..looks like his fuel tank remains parched.
as a longtime bb supporter, nobody is more disappointed than i am, and i've grown weary of the bi-annual message board venom - from both sides..while kj's early departure spelled doom for our middling program's 2015 season, it is year 5 and there are no more excuses that make any sense..bb is a very good basketball coach and teacher..but we don't have enough athletes that are coachable to an acc level..that aint all bb, but who else can reasonably held responsible?
thankfully, those that make clemson's athletic hire and fire decisions are way above my pay grade..not sure that a struggling program that won't even play at home in 2016 is the best time to go searching..on the surface, we are a very difficult place for a coach to come in and set the world on fire..conversely, i'm more certain that,if you find the right guy, there are a few coaches that can turn around a program in 2 or 3 years..no fan of bruce pearl's history, but awnuhn's program was in even worse shape than ours when bruce pearl took over there last spring..due to outstanding recruiting, they are probably already a better program than we are, and will likely be dancing by 2016 or 17..unforunately, even this bb supporter cannot say the same here..meanwhile, i'll leave the acrimonious infighting over firing bb to others.

What could the admin have done? F OPP he left in the middle of the night and didn't have the balls to tell his players. He left the bench dry as a well.
How's the OPP doing now???? When Rick Barnes was here is when the Admin. should have went all out to keep a coach. He done more than the OPP ever done plus won playoff games.
